P990i Usage....

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Sorry, I don't mean to pry into your personal lives, but I'm really quite curious.....

Why did you guys buy your P990? What do you use it for?

The phone isn't sleek and sexy. It's got fairly dire problems with it. There are other machines that are.....comparable.....for a similar price.

Me:
I run a small company and have very poor memory. I would literally die if I didn't have a good calendar on my phone. I also travel quite a bit and am quite a music addict. My business requires me to be able to take pictures of samples / product. I previously had a phone, a PDA, a CD-walkman, a dig.cam. In other words, carrying around 4 bits of kit in my jacket / trousers at all times, I have to remember to pack ALL my chargers, and replacing each one would require probably approximately $200 each.
This saves me time and money and strength.

well i'm a student, and I help my parents run the fam business. So I need a good calander, to remind me of classes, and test, and due assignments. I also use quickoffice, ie. word, excel to start my projects. I like watching videos, and listening to music a lot on my phone. I love having a all in one devoce. After using a lot of PDA's out there I really found out what i need and want. I like having a QWERTY kb, but one that I can use with one hand. Sometimes I like having a phone pad for fast and easy texting while driving, cause I don't have too look at what buttons I'm pushing. The WiFi was a big plus for me also. The cam was just icing on the cake it's amazing. But honestly i have retired my P990 for now. The slowness of the device, and the bugs but most importantly the missing if text and calls. That made me go out and buy another phone. I still do love the P990 it is really an all in one device. But I'm am more than happy with my Treo 750. It's the best phone-pda that I have ever used. It's just great. Hopefully the P990 will become great again after the next firmware upgrade. But even if it doesn't I will be just as happy with my Treo 750.

I use it mainly to surf the Net, but I'm finding more uses for it, such as watching movies and listening to the radio/mp3. Now I'm just waiting for a more stable firmware, a surround-sound bluetooth earphones, and a 8 gig memory stick duo pro!

On the topic of batteries.. my phone would shut off on me when it says it has 20% battery life.. then it wouldn't turn on anymore.

So far i use mine just for text calls, calender, need to setup email again. Also web browsing, and TV over 3G. Mine tends to turn its self off at about 4-6% battery life, also today after charging all night said 99% charged i think the firm ware is glitchey re battery life.

I use the 2mp camera for recon/reference photography in my job.

Ideally I would get more use from the organizer, but the sync-utility does not work on mac.

In theory I could use the powerpoint viewer, but I think the screen is so small that you need to reformat all your slides for viewing on the P990. (I'm not going to do that).

Whenever I try to use the wifi in public, it's such a long process of setting up an account for a certain router that I never get to checking my email. These days I just use GPRS, as I have on all my other non-wifi phones. Wifi on the P990 is more of a "theoretical benefit".

how do u watch tv on the p990?

I got the P990 because my P910 was two years old and I needed a new phone. Having waited 11 months for the phone to come out, got it on day one. There is no really business need for me to have the phone, mainly a SE addiction which needed to be feed.

Main usagesThings I don't use

@artesa

How'd you set it up to your car?

@pre_fknlude

I was at 80% yesterday and it didn't want to turn on again. Hope that don't happen again.

How do people watch TV on the phone??

Posted by: artesea

LaughingBandit - lots of wires. I've got a universal suction holder, with the HCH-60 to keep the phone just in place. I've then got the CLA-60 in-car charger, with a Sony Ericsson to 3.5mm adapter which is wired up to one of those MP3 tape things.
A lot cheaper than a professional install but a lot more messy.

PreFknLude_SiR - In the UK all the phone networks offer TV channels via 3G streaming.
I however convert divx/xvid files to MP4 and run them off the memory card.

Darn the US carriers with no 3G!

Posted by: LaughingBandit

North Americans have a tendency to think that we're ahead of the curve. In terms of mobile tech, some developing countries have us beat. No offense to you stateside mate. I'm in Canada. It's worse here. PWUAHAHHAHAHA

The NEW 3rd world society. =)~

US carriers are hopelessly behind the times. Buggers!

Can't blame'em tho.
US: old money companies have too much of a foothold in the US. too many bassackward people in the bush too.
Canada: not enough population density to invest too heavily into new technology. Land lines already in place. Have to put up towers too and then into new system (3G) for select few to utilise. Not likely going to happen.

*sigh*

"Not enough population density"? Is there a stat like 75% of the Canadian population live within a geographical strip 50 miles north of the US border?

Also Iceland has as low population densiity as you can get, yet they are around the top of the worldwide charts in terms of wireless usage and broadband coverage.

So whichever way you look at it, I dont population density can be the story.

Maximizing profits, that's why they haven't upgraded their networks to keep up with Asia. If you don't have to drop the cash to upgrade and people still buy the service, why do it? That's, IMO, the reason we're so,ooo, ooo, ooo, ooo far behind.

I didn't say that it was THE story, but a PART of the story.
Iceland has low population density, but the country itself is also small. Hence, getting coverage to remote places isn't as difficult / cosly.

2nd. I don't know how well their land lines were hooked up and how much previous wireless technology was in place.

Regardless, I've only offered a piece of the puzzle pie. To get into anymore depth would just require too much time / energy.
