Blackjack tips/tricks/hacks/etc

Thought I would start this one since it got released.

My questions:

1. What is the big difference in Xpress mail and POP3 email, other than paying for xpress? Is one better than the other?

2. Is there a "Leave Mail on Server" option hiding someplace? Or do I have to synch email with my laptop to make sure I have it all in one place? It appears that if I delete mail from the BJ, then it doesn't show up on my laptop.

3. Tech support is helpless. They know very little about this one.

Is the only way to close out of an application OFFICIALLY to use the task manager. If im on a page in IE and I hit the end call button to go back to the home screen, Task manager says it is still running in the background. Same thing holds true for WMP. How do i quit out so its not using memory/processor time. There is no option in the menu field.

Some notes:

You can adjust the brightness of the screen in Settings.
Pressing and holding the Home button brings up the task manager
pressing and holding the jog dial brings up a list of apps
pressing the power button brings up the quicklist

And Voice Command 1.6 works on the Blackjack. So for all those dissappointed about no voice dialing, you now have an excellent option. Voice Command rocks.

You waited and waited and whined and now it is here! Voice Command not only now officially runs on our Smartphones, it also supports Bluetooth headsets. It's not cheap, $39.99. I have found from its first incarnation that it has always been a good application. However it doesn't seem to work on the BlackJack. Sad

Okay for all my current Sling box users, here is a workaround until there is a beta version for this smartphone orginally posted by TriNe0 @ slingboxes web forum (sorry TriNe0 I couldnt wait to share the news)

It seems the issue is that the sling player doesn't properly support the native resolution of the BlackJack's screen (320x240) (TriNe0 figured this out because I could see the video when TriNe0 pressed the menu button...). Here's what you need to do:

1. Launch sling mobile player but do not connect

2. click on Menu > Player Options > Encoding

3. Scroll down, and uncheck "auto resolution mode"

4. Change the video resolution to "160x120"

5. Hit OK...and you're set!

The downside is that, unless you view in full screen, the size of the image is real small... But watching it in full screen should be fine... and hopefully the picture quality will improve if Sling can get this to work in 320x240...

Tested and it does work and allow you to get a full screen ( a little blurry) but a bigger screen nonetheless.

Gunner1, I have it up and running on the Blackjack, as do othes, without a hitch. I've used this since it came out in PPC and hacked it onto a 3125 and this is the most accurate version I've used. There's a thread over in smartphone about some tips to help the installation go smoothly.

Glad I could help! I was a little worried that I'd have to wait weeks or months to finally take full advantage of my Slingbox!!! Hopefully Sling will get a new Beta out for us BlackJack users to fixed this issue permanently!

I know it's only been one day...but I love this phone... I tried the Moto Q when it first came out...and was terribly disappointed with the quality of the device (I returned it after just 3 days). Seems like the BlackJack is a keeper!

You mean YOUR version doesn't work, correct? 1.6 works great on the Blackjack so I'm assuming you mean an older version.

Are smartphones not as hackable or tweekable as pda's? I am just wondering why 8525 seems to get the hacks out quick and we are just fiddling with our thumbs. I have only used pda so this is new to me. Still love the phone though just not sure if I will swap to the 8525 I keep touching my screen expecting it to accept touch lol.

There is actually. I used to have a smartphone along time ago and remember a registry edit that disabled that notification. I'll try and find it again cause it's bugging me too.

I think you can tweak things quite a bit. I think the issue is that most of the people that come up with these tweaks use the PPC OS and not the smartphone OS.

Disable Message Sent Notification
Many people find the "Message Sent" notification that pops up after a successful text message to be annoying. Here is an easy registry hack to disable it. This will require a registry editor.

Disable the "Message Sent" notification after sending a text message by following these steps:

1. Navigate to: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox
2. Create a new key "Settings"
3. Create a new string value "SMSNoSentMsg" and set the value to 1

You probably bought the Pocket PC Edition, which is the wrong build. There are two Voice Command builds; one for WM5 Smartphone Edition and one for Pocket PC Edition.

You'll need the version for Smartphone Edition. When you go to Handango, choose the Motorola Q (WM5) as your device and then find Voice Command. That will give you the right version.

FYI- you can reassign the long press of the side Back button near the jog dial to open whatever app you want. I have it set to launch Voice Command.

Anyone figure out how to activate voice command? It says it is using the record button but I have not idea what that is (I can click the app in start and it works and finds anyone I ask it to call). Also I have a H700 BT Headset and when I hit the button on it Voice Command does not start. How can I get it to work with BT?

Unfortunately, I don't yet have access to a BT headset to try out Voice Command with. I too would love to hear from people who have installed VC and have successfully activated it with a headset.

Settings>security>more>reset ...its at the very end. Password default is 0000. I don't know the by-pass method yet that you could use if you are locked up and can't get to the security settings I outlined.

Thank you, sir! They buried the hard reset deep in this sucker.

Cingular's Xpress Mail left a stupid notification error popup that refused to go away after I uninstalled it.

Thanks, I'm actually in the same boat as you. I spoke with Adam and I'm not on the list either...yet. I'm sure there's a reg hack but I'm ok with waiting.

I noticed the same thing with the keylock on. At first this bugged me because I'm use to pressing any key then unlock and *. After playing with it for a while, I now think it is a good thing. When you have the phone in a holder it gets pressed all of the time which turns on the backlight and wastes batteries...this way the only way to unlock it is the top power which accidently get hit. Just my $.02.

Oh one other thing. I don't think the S620/Dash has a seperate power button...the end is the power button. So technically you're hitting the power button to intiate the backlight.

Speaking of 3G...in NYC on using the dslreports.com/mspeed test I got a low score of 891 Kbits/second and a high of 897 Kbits/second in Chelsea. Not too shabby. No wonder I'm slinging easily at over 300k. I guess im only limited by my cable modems upload speed. BlackJack rocks...now if I can just find a case.

Don't know if anyone cares...but if you want to use your own MP3's as ringtones just drop the files into the application data folder/sounds and they will pop up in the ring tone field in settings. Or you can throw them into my documents and menu click on it to "set as" ringtone.

Cingular has a section on their Blackjack phone tutorial on how to select either 3G or GSM networks.

too bad the idiots forgot to enable the damn function on the freakin' phone and failed to tell the web site people that so they didnt have that part on the BJ tutorial.

and yet another good move by Cingular's lovely engineers.

They are not trained for PDA device, call ANS (data support team).

Where are you located? I'm in Orange County, CA and notice that I primarily am EDGE but every once in awhile I'll see that I'm in a 3G spot.

I don't think 3G is official out here so it doesn't bother me. Just shows that they're at least coming out with it here!

Where in Orange County are you? I wanted to get the BJ but since there is no 3G where I live, Los Angeles(which is ridiculously stupid..like how the hell do they not have it in LA!!!), I'm somewhat hesitating buying it. How fast is EDGE for you?

I'm in Irvine but drive all over Southern California. I can tell you that in San Diego (where 3G is available), I got it the whole time I was there. I think when I went back to EDGE when I hit Carlsbad on the way back.

I agree with you on not having it in LA. It's crazy. San Diego got it first. EDGE is fast enough for me. If I'm going to do anything intensive online I just use my laptop with Sprint EVDO connection (it's faster than EDGE speeds and works well).

Not covered either with 3G in Denver. I bought the Blackjack (for me) and the 8525 (for my wife). I don't feel so bad, the 8525 isn't jumping onto Edge. It is still on GPRS...just like her old 8125.

There's supposed to be some intermediate speed network coming online soon in this area.

the map shows all of manhattan south of the top of central park and some fringe areas in NJ and queens & brooklyn that get a bit of coverage from manhattan towers. i was in LIC today and depending on where i stood, it would swap back and forth between 3G and edge. its not seamless. some calls i was on today got messed up because of that (or maybe a coincidence, but it happened whenever the 3G signal got low then switched over to edge, which is a very strong signal where i was).

both LGA and JFK and surrounding neighborhoods have 3G. of course, since i live in forest hills, queens - exactly between the 2 airports, it will be a while before i see any 3G action at home.

Denver should be covered. I saw a map that showed 3g service. The one on the website is outdated and needs to be re-vamped. If your phone says U on your 8525 or on the Blackjack a 3g, then you have UMTS there.

Having to press the Power key makes it almost a two-handed operation when unlocking. It is relatively slow, requiring three key presses, with the Power key on top of the device, especially when compared to Treo's unlock strategy.

I acknowledge the battery issue, but if only one key on the pad will light up the screen, then unlock, then *, it would be better than having to reach for the Power key, IMO.

I seek a way to change this behavior. I hope someone comes up with a solution.

I just got 943 Kbit/sec on the Mobile DSLreports at my house in Downers Grove, IL (Chicago Suburbs). This was on the 1MB test. Sad that I'm getting faster downloads on my phone than my DSL, wow I really need to get faster internet!

Denver has been delayed by the FCC. Cingular needs to clean up some old AT&T spectrum before they can turn it on. The equipment is in place... and from what I've been told by various reps it should be live 1st qtr 2007 for Denver.

Why do certain apps always pop up in my task manager...I never choose active sync...in fact I've done everything I can to disable it yet its always there! Is there any way to actually quit out of IE and Windows Media? I'd rather not have them hogging memory or processr time in the background! Any ideas?

I live in Chelsea and 3G works, I picked up my girlfriend in SoHo last night and 3G worked and I work on Long Island (Huntington) and 3G works there. It will get better and better as it is new.

You can change the sound using the HKLM\Software\HTC\Startup and HKLM\Software\HTC\Shutdown

Start > Settings > Profiles
or on the main Home Screen go down to where it says
Profile: Normal and choose that


This is where the phones gets Nokia Like. You have different profiles and can edit them and rename them too. I make one profile ring lound, another ring low and another only vibrate and another totally silent. You can change the profiles through settings, the homescreen or the power button on the top of the phone.

So I couldnt use apps that I used on my 8125 on this phone right? What is a good Reg Edit app for this phone? Thanks.

ANybody have the problem that the 3G network blocks your caller ID? I have privacy manager at home and when I call from my BJ in 3G privacy manager picks up. If I happen to be on edge, no issues.

Resco works


Hold the homekey for task manager to close out programs like WM and IE as far as the ASync I have found that it does pop up alot when I am not using it.

I read in some review or forum that there was a keyboard shortcut for turning on and off bluetooth. Can't remember what it is. I know I can hold the power button then pick from that menu then turn off BT.

What I'm talking about is something like Fcn+B to turn it off and on - just can't find where I had read that.

Anyone?

You are correct. Fn + B toggles Bluetooth. There are a few other (not-so-useful) shortcuts listed in the Getting Started Guide that ships with the Blackjack:

Fn + C = Cingular Mall
Fn + M = Cingular Music
Fn + V = Cingular Video
Fn + W = MEdia Net

I just tried to connect to Cingular Video to see what that was about. I get a message that I am unable to connect because I lost the network connection but I can go to other non-cingular websites. I signed up for the highly controversial PDA unlimited data connect plan.

Heard that's a current bug with Java on the BJ. I'm waiting for a fix too.

i was trying to get rid of that terrible startup/shutdown splash screen with the annoying sound effects, and i used PHM Reg editor and found the path on my blackjack to be

local machine>system>shutdown>1>
local machine>system>startup>1>

i think this is where u would go to get those out of there cause its the only thing i could find in the registry.... my problem however is once im there and i try to delete the value, it says its unable to perform that operation. anyone else get this, or has anyone got another way to remove that god awful noise on startup/shutdown?

Don't know if this was answered: To soft reset turn phone off, hold cursor up button and press power, hold at same time, follow commands.

I just tried this and it said to Format and Re-boot Press 1. I wasn't sure what happens next so I didn't try. Will it erase all my data?

What Reg Edit Program are you using on this phone? I have all these great sites for software that I used on my 8125, but that was a different version of WM right and they wont work on this phone? I know that the SPB products dont work on this phone.

What are the DNS changes that you make to speed up the internet?

i installed both PHM Reg Editor and Resco Reg Editor... both installed and worked, although PHM said it didnt install properly but still opened and worked, but neither would allow me to remove the startup/shutdown crap so i dunno if they work fully like they should

I just posted this over in the smartphone forum but here it is again:

Ditch the Blackjack Startup & Shutdown Screens/Sounds

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you find the startup and shutdwon screens on the Blackjack to be annoying, you can get rid of them with a registry change as folows:

HKey_Local_Machine>system>
-under system there are two entries: Shutdown and Startup
-under each one you will find an entry named 1
-under 1 there is a value name of Dll
-the default value for both entries is OemAnimationDll.dll
-change the default value data of each of those files (startup and shutdown) to the word none (I suppose null would work also but I know the word none does for sure)
-after changeing the value to none, back out to the main menu - wait a couple seconds and shut down and then restart, and you will find the annoying shutdown and startup screens and audio are gone.

When you shut down, hold the on/off button down for the normal 2-3 three seconds and release. At that point when you normally would have seen the shutdown screen and audio, it appears that nothing is happening, but just be patient and wait the few seconds a shutdown normally takes and the screen will go blank as the unit powers off.

On startup, you will immediately see the standard blue Windows Mobile Screen which will be there until the home screen comes up and loads. Just remember that it still takes the normal time to shutdown and startup. I guess all the startup and shutdwon OEM .dll files did was run in the foreground while the normal o/s functions ran in the background.

Not to brag or anything but I got the chance to play with a E62 and a Treo 750v today...man I couldn't be happier that I chose the BlackJack. Its just ridiculously small compared to other smartphones/pdas. My friends who usually frown upon my gadget obessions have even praised the "wow factor" of the BJ.

NOW WHY DOES ACTIVESYNC keep opening up! ARRRG! Holding side scroll click down to launch my apps/folders/urls has made me forget about a stylus. This phone is legit!

I might be wrong, but I think Activesync keeps opening up if you have configured the push email through Activesync. Activesync is probably pinging your work's Exchange server or keeping some sort of connection for the push email to work.

Anyone encounter problems with Activesync while talking on the phone? I manually activated Activesync on my Blackjack, and I started making a phone call on the Blackjack. When I finished the phone call, the device informed me that the sync process was interrupted. Almost as if my Blackjack is unable to receive data while I am talking on the phone ... Your comments about this issue would be very much appreciated.

I changed the Contacts button on the home screen to use Voice Command, so now I can get to it quick and easy without pressing and holding down any buttons. Just go to Settings and then Key Settings and Home Screen RSK

I dont have push email set up currently. I just manually check my email from my home pop3 account. I think anytime you open up mail, or sms active sync opens as well. Then again, when I'm doing nothing active sync is there too---laughing---always laughing at me with its little green circle of arrowed annoynace.

You are right that it was originally released for 2003 and has not been updated for awhile, but it works perfectly in wm5 on both platforms. I unzipped the file on my desktop, saved it, and copied the .exe file to a subdirectory I set up for it in the program files on the device, create a shortcut and drop it into the start up menu and you're all set. There are others out there, but i've used this one from its beginning and it has always worked for me so I keep using it.

Also having the gmail problem, as well as not being able to send any email from the phone via a pop-3 account. It gets all the mail, but then I get an error message and it tells me to check the netowork (I have confirmed my settings a million times)

Go into the Wireless Manager (either click on the 'Cingular' row of the home screen, or choose '2' from the QuickList (power button). Then, press the Menu button (it's item '1').

Most likely that you fell off the 3G network when you placed the call, and thus couldn't support simultaneous voice and data. Mine does this occasionally.

You can set the timeout on the keypad backlight using registry key HKCU/ControllPanel/KeypadBacklight/Timeout. Default setting seems to be 15 seconds. I set mine to 5 seconds to conserve power.

I think you downloaded the wrong version. There are two (one ppc & one smartphone). This is the link to the right one for smartphone at Handango. Before installing this version, assuming that is the problem, remove/unistall the other version from you pc and device before reinstalling the smartphone version.

This happened to me too. They had put me on the $39 PDA connect plan and taken the text msg package off. It locked out text msging entirely.

I see that it shows your current battery usage. does it also tell you when it's charging and when it is complete? the bj fails to tell you charging is complete without going into the task manager.

FYI, on my BJ, it (regular BJ software) shows a charging plug in the battery icon while charging, and a full battery when it is full charged.

Some, including myself, have it working well except call initiation from the bT earphone. I can initiate the call with vc from the BJ and the BT will pick it up. There is a longer thread on this in the smartphone forum.

I don't believe there ia a way. I also think the thread you are referring to was speaking about a ppc device which did have a way to do that and you could set your bands or use an auto setting. I think some are complaining the Cingular disabled that on the 8525.

I set up my email through mobile outlook (i use pop3) and select it to check every 15 min. It's not as quick as push or bberry, but it's not too bad either and it's automatic.

My new BJ is being delivered tomorrow. I have a quick question. I searched the forums and didn't see anything, so here goes: Does the BJ have contacts shortcuts similar to the BB 8700. Not the speed dialing i.e. 1-99 but rather if my contacts name is Jim, I can have is number tied to the letter "J" on the phone and all I have to do is hold down the "J" button and it calls Jim?

Those instructions are for PPC. I assume the DNS setting to change are under GPRS, the ones set by default to 0.0.0.0?

You may have to re-enter the contact as a new contact. I did this with my daughters number and used a pic of her.(They give pic as an option for new contacts)

I don't believe the BJ has a feature like this but I use a little free program called Dontforget. I have not tried it on the BJ yet but it worked fine on the Dash. You can find it Here:

Just go to Outlook on your PC and open the contact then click on the blank picture place holder. That will let you open files on your PC and pick a picture for any contact.

On the phone you can go to the MY PICTURES folder and highlight the picture you want to use, then hit MENU then SET AS then CALLER ID and then pick a contact to associate with that picture...

easy as pie

Nope, unfortunately just the 1-99 scheme. I loved the feature you described when I had my TREO 650. Maybe someone will come out with an app to do it.

Same thing here....complained a lot to the Tech rep and he gave me 100 text messages a month for free.

I just got my Blackjack an hour ago. Very, very happy so far.

Anyway, I noticed If you hold a key down it will auto switch to its alternate character!

I had this on the old treo, but missed it desperately on the 8125.

Also: Question -- Does anyone know what the resolution of the background picture on the home screen is? I'd like to upload a custom pic.

Assign the URL to a contact, then go to contact manager and assign a shortcut to it.

It's clunky, but it works.

Blackjack Case: Oakley Sunglass Bag

This is what I use for my phones. I use a sewing machine to change the length, but it is lightweight and the material will not scratch the phone. The best part is the drawstring on the bag. I usually pull the phone out of my pocket by it.

I showed the guys at the Cing store my bag with my Razor in it and they looked me and said that's a great idea!

Im currently using an iPod sock...not the best solution but quite a good fit! I found some cases on ebay but I can't judge their quality. Some of those knock-offs might actually cause more harm than good. I'd love to see some viable alternatives actually crafted for the BJ.

I asked this question earlier in the larger Blackjack thread. Apparently the phone doesn't support automatic keylock, you have to hold down the "end" key for 3-4 seconds and it locks the phone.

Just in case anyone has had trouble sending pop3 emails from their blackjack using a road runner pop3 account, here are the settings. You need to use cingular's smtp server address instead of the road runner smtp server to allow the sending of email from the blackjack.

example xxx=city code (satx, kc, etc)

pop-server.xxx.rr.com for your pop server address

cwmx.com is what you enter for the smtp server address.


cwmx.com is cingular's smtp server. choose "use authentication" and you should be good to go. send a test message just to be sure.

If it asks for username and password (it does if you are setting up "other pop3, but not if you are setting up your initial xpressmail pop account) then leave both blank.

before i found the cingular smtp server address i could receive email from road runner but could not send email. now you can send and receive from your blackjack using your road runner pop3 account...giddyup.

if this has already been posted then feel free to move/delete.

Does downloading Pocket MSN allow me to receive my hotmail directly to my BJ? Is there anyway for me to accomplish this or must i only receive it from the internet? Also, is there an attachment limit on emails? I had an email with a PDF and Word Document and there was no option to download. Can anyone help?

Works for me. Make sure you turn discovery on in your bluetooth settings on your phone.

I just signed up because I jsut got a Blackjack and i'm not so happy with it.

1. I cannot get Gmail to work right. It will only download all my msg's but even then, when I disconnect it removes them all. It won't download the newest or anything. I even tried the Gmail app but it keeps asking for permisions and then doesn't work.

2. anyway to customize the homescreen and take off the Xpressmail sign up link or the Calender appointments link? Or just change their placment?

3. How is your camera? Even in daylight, their is a noticable delay on the screen (as if the shutter is slow) and pics come out blurry

4. Any way to get google calendar to sync (longshot)

How are you downloading the messages? Are you using Pocket Outlook and downloading via POP3?

The permissions issue is a known problem. The blackjack has a few Java bugs that I believe are being worked through.

Your device comes with a few home screen choices. To change to a different homescreen go to Settings -> Display -> Home Screen. The homescreens are a XML file located in Application Data\Home, so if you just want to take that one section out you should be able to do that as well.

You can also download 3rd party Homescreens. Look for "Motorola Q" homescreens since they work on the Blackjack quite well.

I haven't used the camera much but the two pictures I took came out fine. I don't expect much though out of a camera that comes on a phone.

If you edit a contact a few fields down there is a section for a custom ringtone. I believe all you need to do is choose one for each Contact but I have never used this option so I am not 100% sure.

Well I don't use Outlook. Gmail is my main email. At first setup, I was able to retrieve all mail. I did that but when I exited the inbox and did some other stuff like browse the web and make a few calls, all the emails were gone.

OK I agree can not sync with the MAcBook.

I have been triyng to get my contact from my Mac address book to BJ, but it does not connect.
NOTE: I had no problem with the Razr.

Any other ideas for the contact?
Any ideas for the MAc BT connection?

I have discovery on and when i try to connect via blue tooth to do a simple data transfer i get an unsupported services error. i get this error device to device also..

I was about the ask the same question. This has been driving me crazy. It would be nice to be able to "mark" numerous messages from the list view and then delete all. I would even be satisfied if a single keystroke would delete a message, e.g. highlighting a message and pressing 'd' would delete it. Having to go through to menue to delete each message is a PITA.

There is now a DELETE ALL menu item from the folders screen

At least this lets you empty an entire folder easily.... but a checkmark system like google uses would be nice....

Use Entourage for Mac and an exchange server

You can configure Entourage for the Mac with an exchange server and then sync wirelessly OTA. No need to connect to anything.... That's how I have it set up and it works great plus you get push email.....

if the intention is to get rid of old email, pocket outlook does that automatically based on a schedule. go to account options and when you get to the screen that shows contacts, email,etc, highlight email, hit menu and set the schedule to hold mail (1 day, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month or all). any mail older than your schedule allows gets deleted automatically.
