Is this possible? To lock it in so it ONLY uses UMTS/HSDPA?

Start > Settings > Personal > Phone > Band > Select WCDMA under network type.

Warning, you will have no service at all if you drop out of UMTS.

that was disabled in the cingular extrom. I had to go through the above registry edit to add the "band" tab.

Thanks for that. This will definitely come in handy.
Two questions:
Does cingular use UMTS 1900+800? (I should know this.)
Also
Do you know what that 1 registry entry does ""Enable3GLongNamePrefix"=dword:00000001" ?

I have no idea, I just took that post from xda developers

@RF9: from what I know, Cingular uses the 1900 band for 3G

Posted by: importluva

Oh, I forgot about that question.

Cing uses 1900 and 850 for its UMTS connection.

you need to get a registry editor like Resco or Total Commander. The latter is free.

Posted by: gravejoker

or PHM Regedit ..

Posted by: Jhego

i downloaded PHM regedit, and i dont know where it went? It doesnt even show on the "remove programs" window. Is it compatible for the WM5?

Posted by: gravejoker

it is .. just look around in your programs folder or all the settings tabs .. should be there in one of those places ..

okay, so the next question is: how can I select to use EDGE only on my 8525?

the reason I'm asking is because our UMTS service took a dump for a few days last week and I couldnt use my 8525 at all because it wouldnt fall back on EDGE service while I was in my UMTS area. pissed me off to no end.

so I'd like to be able to switch between EDGE and UMTS should that problem occur again.

This same method works for EDGE also. After you apply the registry change the "Band" Tab has the option of:
Auto, WCDMA, GSM

Auto=Auto switch between HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE, GPRS (U, E, G icons.)
WCDMA=HSDPA/UMTS only (aka 3G)
GSM=GPRS/EDGE only (aka 2G)

It also has an option to select frequencies, which you don't really need to mess with.

Just a little background for readers who don't already know:
HSDPA/UMTS (HSDPA is just a faster upgrade to UMTS) works so over Cingular's new WCDMA network (the 3G network.)
EDGE/GPRS (EDGE is just a faster upgrade to GPRS) works over Cingular's GSM network.

um, the same thing as if you wanted 3G only, instead you just choose GSM only.
