So, if you had to choose, and money was no object, which device would you choose; The 8525 or Blackjack? (I do live in 3G coverage)

If money was no object, I'd get both!

Both? BTDT. I have the BJ, my wife has the 8525.

I have wondered the same thing, and based on my messing with both several times, I am leaning toward the 8525.

too true....
But the BJ is sleeker, & the 8525 will have PTT in 2007, it has BB service & touch screen.

i went out and bought 8525 yesterday and returned it today. 8525 is a very nice device, but it is too bulky for my taste. i am coming from blackberry 7130c. also, one handed operation of phone is definitely not possible with 8525. so, i went out and exchanged 8525 with BJ today and i have been playing with it for a while (i am typing this from BJ). form factor is nice! i guess i will have to do without skype (they need to make one with just chat. i think there is a beta somewhere that i need to hunt down). keyboard is cramped and negvigation pad is too close to other buttons on BJ. another negative point about BJ is that battery is gone much quicker than any mobile i have ever owned! but this could be the fact that i am currently visitng an area that does not have a great 3G coverage. i am pretty happy with BJ for now.

DO you miss wi-fi?

Posted by: spartanrob

I have both the BJ and a TyTn and i'm trying to decide the same thing. The battery is an issue with the BJ but the TyTn battery life isn't great either. I'm betting it's more of a network issue as I am on the fringe of 3G.

The BJ keyboard is cramped, but works fine. I have hit the end button numerous times while trying to use the directional buttons. Speed and reception seem to be similar. I do miss having a touchscreen. The size of the BJ wins, although the only difference is the thickness, the height and width are the same. I need to make a decision on one or the other but i'm just having a tough time. FWIW i also have a 3125 but it doesn't have 3G.

Posted by: SangLad

nah, i don't miss WiFi. reason being is that normally i am in solid 3G area. regarding battery, i am willing to carry the additional battery (it is small enough and you can charge the spare at work and swap out the battery). i say one must think the context one use the phone in 90% of one's time. if you are on the move a lot and don't want to carry much then BJ is one for you. i think every one knows by now the difference between two phones are mainly the form and WiFi.

on the other note, must get the new MS voice dialer! it is brilliant!

Which has the better RF - the BJ or the 8525?

Posted by: pdagal

The BJ has better reception (in 3G areas). 3-4 bars on the BJ vs. 2 on the 8525.

This is not an accurate indicator of signal strength as mention in the forum many times.

Posted by: maevro

I had the choice to purchase either one when I went to the store and I chose the Blackjack. I had the 8125 when it came out and it was great, but I keep my phone in my pocket a lot and it was way to bulky for me. I dont miss WiFi because I am in a huge market (NYC / Long Island) and I get great 3G coverage almost everywhere.

I dont care about touchscreen and PTT, so size was the biggest factor for me. I dont think the BJ has a worse battery life then the 8525 because I cannot imagine that the 8125 is too different from the 8525 in that area and the 8125 wasnt too good either, imo.

I have both and right now I am posting this on my 8525 while my blackjack has no service. the BJ is good in rf, but I think the 8525 is better

I think EQO Mobile lets you do that. And they just released it for the Blackjack.

I chose the 8525. The form factor of the BJ is VERY nice, but I want/need the PPC OS. Just more versatile.

Posted by: pdagal

I was referring to 3G only. Tests also based on call quality, when signal drops (we put our phones in a metal box) and raw RF in db when available using our utility (only works on some phones). Also testing latency changes relative to reported signal in data transfers. The 8525 will drop signal in our metal box while the BJ holds on with 1 to 2 bars.

Thank you for the response. It occurs to me that because they are from different manufacturers, the number of bars may not mean different reception on the different phones. Thus I ask whether you have noticed an actual difference in reception on the two devices while in use?

Also, Los Angeles is not yet 3G. We are still at 2G (2.5G?). Has anyone compared the two phones' reception here or in similar areas?

I love the BJ but am really irked that I have to go into the Headset Manager under Headset Setting to connect the BJ's BT to my car's BT each time after I have connected the BJ to my Moto 850 at home or in my office. By comparison, on my 3125, when I got into my car after using my 3125 & 850, the 3125 would automatically connect to my car's BT. I would expect that the 8525's BT would operate more like the 3125 than the BJ. But if the 8525 does not have as good of reception as does the BJ, the decision becomes more difficult!

(To forestall the inevitable question re the BJ connecting to my car's BT, it is a Jaguar. But I am not able to use all of the car's BT features. I initiate outgoing calls from the phone.)

Well, after going to the store to evaluate the BlackJack--- I must say.. it is sexy... but I think since I'll be going to Europe in January for a few weeks, and I'm a student now until December, and going to want to have the capability of the PPC os over the SmartPhone Edition, I'll definitely be trying out the 8525 which should be at my door tomorrow!

BlackJack I think.. even though it felt good and looks great, that OS just seems so crippled... and I would really like the capabiliy of having a PC in my pocket at all times. I'm a nerd, what can I say.

Thanks for listening to all my contemplations, but I'll let you all know what I think of the 8525 once I open it tomorrow.. maybe another review, who knows.

I ordered myself the blackjack... I owned a smartphone, the 3125, and didnt like it as much as ppc. But i have a feeling I'll like the blackjack or the 8525 because of the 3g and they both have keyboards unlike the 3125. The 3125 was a downgrade from my 8125 which is why i didnt like it. The blackjack, in most aspects, is an upgrade to my e62 which is why i think i made the right decision.

Whenever I use smartphone I keep tapping the screen to get things done faster. To this day, I have not had any success

Could you elaborate on that for me. Other than 3G, what are the major upgrades?

Posted by: SangLad

From the brief period that I had 8525 (one day). It seems to me that both the 8525 and BJ has similar RF (I am no expert). But the voice call quality does seems to be better for BJ (from the people that I called says, so who knows what that means). I really think that both device is great, but as other people have mentioned if you carry your phone in your pocket like I do, then BJ should fit you well. I normally don't type a lot from my from phone (I do view PDF, ppt, doc a lot on my phone though and occasional ssh-ing), so slide out keyboard does not mean much to me as well as touch screen. Calling and operating the phone with one hand is important though (I have been in so many situation where I was holding my brief case/carry bag and newspaper/coffee and had to call someone or look up something on the phone... Also, for WiFi, it's nice to have it, but then again, I won't miss it since 3G is good in my area. Hope this helps.

Just to let you know that skype for pocket pc works for BJ!!! I just installed it directly to BJ and chatted with one of my contacts. Have not tried voice-dial, but I don't really need to have voice dial with Skype...

Could you tell me if Voice dial works on your BJ? Whenever I try to call one of my contacts on skype it hangs, calling with Skype-out works fine though.
