Blackjack - headphones/usb/charging port

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: MarkK

I have a BJ on order -- should be here Monday. I'm wondering about the headphones port. My understanding is that there is a single proprietary port which is used for charging, usb sync, and headphone connections. So my questions are:

1) Does the BJ come with any headphones that plug into this port?
2) Can you charge and use headphones at the same time?
3) Is there an adapter which would allow me to connect normal 3.5mm headphones to this phone?

Thanks for your help.

No, you need to purchase the $40 media accessory for the stereo headphones or you can find them online for less than 15. Same headphone/handsfree as the D807

2) Can you charge and use headphones at the same time?

Nope.

3) Is there an adapter which would allow me to connect normal 3.5mm headphones to this phone?

Yes. check ebay. search " stereo headset D807"

Thanks for your help.

I was browsing on Samsungs site and saw this adapter...

20 Pin Multi Adapter

It looks to have 3 ports on it and had the 20 pin plug for the Blackjack. From the pic, it looks like the 3 ports are:

1 - USB/Power (backside)
2 - Samsung proprietary headphone jack (front side)
3 - 3.5mm headphone jack (left side)

So, I assume with this (when it is available) we will be able to listen (without popping) and charge/sync at the same time!

Posted by: ascalon

Wow! Is there an adapter like this for the 8525?

Posted by: maevro

Wow, that adapter is freaking sweet! It is a pain because in my car I have the Samsung ear buds and I have the Samsung car charger and you cannot use both at the same time due to their being only one port.

They must have added a bunch of new things to that Samsung site because they weren't there when I ordered the extended battery.

BT canot be used on a plane and this is needed to use the BJ for car audio and allows charging at the same time, so this adapter is needed for some...I have BT headphones already but will still be purchasing this...mofo

Its not a question about being cheap, I hate listening to music on my Blackjack with a BT headset.

Sucks to be you I guess then, I very much enjoy listening to my music through My headphones.

Posted by: dbltap

Yes.... I should just give up my $250 studio quality headphones to go to a cheap BT solution? I've got an 11 hour flight back from Frankfurt coming up. BT gonna solve that one? Not hardly. There are some very good legitimate uses for this combo adaptor. I'll have one as soon as they are available. BT isn' the be all, end all soultion for every environment.

Bluetooth can be used on a plane, just not during takeoff and landing.

Looks sweet. I'd rather use this than have to deal with the limited choices in BT headphones.

Please find me a link that says the FAA has approved the use of bluetooth devices during flight....everything I have read after reading your post and searching indicates that ALL devices that transmit or receive wirelessly CANNOT be used unless the wireless functionality is turned off. I did however see some exceptions for European airlines...

Me too! lets see when they send me a shipping confimation then i'll know its really out. *crossing fingers* for that email in the morning

Posted by: dbltap

Well, they are on the Samsung website as of 7:20am CST. I took a shot on the free shipping as the Samsung plant is about 4 miles from my house. Wish I could just run over and pick one up.

I'll keep ya posted.

BT sucks for real audio purposes, i.e. anything besides looking like an idiot talking to no one. Give me the adapter so I can use in the car, on the plane, anywhere, with my $300 Shures. Just beacuase a guy doesn't want to spend >$100 for crappy sounding headpohones does not make him cheap

Posted by: VelfarreClubber

Well my order has been processed! its going to shipped out from Texas hopefully i'll get it by fri/sat. As for the lil stereo bluetooth debate nothing beats a true wired connection for sound quality!

Posted by: jomo25

I ordered one about 2 hours ago also. Will let people know if and how well it works.

Nothing beats the poping sound you get after songs with the hardwire

Posted by: jomo25

Nice flame away. some of us are being nice enough to order this and report back because there's a chance this adapter doesn't suffer from the pops with the previous existing hardwire. The thinking is this is from Samsung itself, and the Samsung stock headphones don't suffer from the popping.

Gotta remember thats from the 1 cent cable from China or where ever else its made from sold on ebay. Hopefully this will work 100% fine since its from Samsung, if not then I guess i'll be going with this product from Sony Ericcson http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/...music-anywhere/ so that I can play music in my car from my blackjack.

So am I correct in seeing a mini-USB port on this thing? I would love to use my mini-USB chargers...

I would imagine that it uses the standard Samsung USB adapter that comes with the Blackjack...just allows you to use multiple cables at once....Samsung headphones, Samsung power or Samsung USB, and standard headphones....I'll post when I get mine.

Posted by: jsuds21

just ordered me one too. hope it does what we all expect it to

Posted by: jpbadonk

I'll post a quick review when mine arrives. It shipped yesterday.

Posted by: jomo25

I got mine today. Not sure if this is what most are going to want.

It has 3 ports. 2 of them are the same 20-pin ports as onthe BJ itself. One is indicated as a USB port. The other as headphones. So presumably, you can charge and listen to music via the standard Samsung charger (that came with the phone) and the same headphones that you could connect directly to the BJ.

THe 3rd port is labeld as a headphone (or headset)> The problem is, its a 2.5mm port. So, I would need a 2.5-to-3.5 adapter to connect my Shures. I can't seem to find my adapter that I had when I used to have the iMate SP5m.

Now, I don't have the adapter, nor do I have the normal headphones for the BJ. So I can't say that this eliminates the popping sound. Also, I can't say for certain that the 2.5 jack is stereo or mono (I worry it's intended for a wired headset for talking, not listening to stereo music).

So, anyone else looking to make the plunge, may want to hold off til I can find my adapter or someone else gets it and tries it. Unless you really would be OK with a 2.5 jack.

Posted by: jomo25

UPDATE: OK - just found my 2.5-to-3.5 adapter. Bad news. I have no idea what the 2.5 port does. It doesn't output any sound to my Shures through a 2.5 adapter. Nothing. So, if you think this is a solution to listen to music through normal headphones. It don't work.

It may work with a 2.5 headset but I don't have one of these to test.

I did confirm that it did actually charge thru the port. But right now, it's a wasted $20 for me.

Posted by: Colonel Taylor

That sucks...I would have liked it to work with my Ultimate Ears 3.5 plug. Sorry to hear you are out the dosh.

My ultimate solution would be an adapter that has a 3.5 plug, mini-USB port, and the standard Samsung port.

I'd love to see the pinouts on the Samsung port...maybe I could fashion one.

Posted by: VelfarreClubber

That sucks big time! jomo25 are you gonna return it back to Samsung? I assume only this product works for sound
and its not out yet

Posted by: TheUnforgiven83

Does the 2.5mm jack on the Adapter work with stock Samsung headphones? I'd guess it should be similar to the one found on the A920 and A930. If so, then all you need is a Motorola ROKR 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter. For some reason both Samsung and Motorola use an abnormal wiring scheme for their tip-ring sleeves, but at least it is the same scheme. I ordered two adapters from Cingular for my MPx220 right after the ROKR came out, and then when I switched to Sprint, I tried it on the Samsung, since I saw that the OEM Stereo Headset had 3 rings on the jack, and sure enough, perfect Stereo sound. And those Cingular adapters have held up well over a year, even with my abuse, unlike the junky Fleabay $3.99 specials that went to mono sound in about 5 minutes of gentle use.

I hope this helps a bit.

Tell me why nobody mentioned the 8525 includes a y cable! Best surprise of the month!

Because everybody knows it comes with one? Hence no supprise. My 8125 don't even need a Y cable. Everything are standard plugs including mini-USB.

Posted by: jomo25

Velfarre, Gonna try to return it. Also the adapter you show - make sure that isn't 2.5mm also. I thought it was when i first saw it on the site...

Unforgiven, I don't have "stock Samsung headphones" so not sure if it does work. But here's something to remember. The stock headphones for the BJ has the 20-pin connector. If you are asking if this works with the stock Samsung headset I don't have one of those either. But then I'd really wonder if it was stereo output even if it did work.

Posted by: Ghettopops

I would like to state that I am not trying to come off like a d*ck and if I have I apologize. I tried the whole adaptor thing and I just did not ever get a good feeling out of it. I hated the pop inbetween songs and the xtra length and weight just pushed me over the top. I figured that I had somewhere around $50 into that setup why not return and pay another $30 and get some BT headphones. They end up not being that bad and the convenience factor more than makes up for the little xtra money.

This is a shame. I'll probably return the one that I ordered...

Posted by: jomo25

well, you sorta did. But anyways. I'm one who already has a Sony DS970, but still recognize that there would be a place and time where wired connection would be better. And again, I think there is a solution that will not have the popping issues. Sadly, this adapter is not the answer.

Posted by: VelfarreClubber

I just got off the phone w/ Samsung to see if I can cancel the order but its already shipped, however they told me this 20 pin multi adapter should work with the blackjack and it has a 2.5 mm and a 3.5 mm jack. Mine will probably come in the mail about 3 hrs from now, so i'll let you guys know how it works out for me.

It would of helped if I'd remembered those details, but at one in the AM my brain is about useless. So, when I said "Stock Samsung Headphones", I meant to say a Stock Samsung Stereo 2.5mm Headset. Such as the ones that came with my A920. Hope that clears things up. Here's what it looks like, not the best picture, but it shows what the 2.5mm jack looks like well: http://www.samsungtelecom.com/usa/AEP204VSEB-Hi-Res.gif

I didn't know that the BlackJack only had the 20 pin port, I would of guessed they would of put a 2.5mm jack on one of the sides. I thought that the adapter was made especially for the M610 which only has a 20 pin port to keep the size down. My bad.
