Changing mail font size OR messaging app replacement

A common request with smartphones (particularly those with landscape orientation) has been to reduce the font size in the messaging (email) application so as to fit more onto the screen. Has anyone figured this one out yet?
Alternatively - has anyone seen (or developed) a replacement app for messaging on the Smartphone platform (e.g., like FlexMail for PPC)?
