using a blackjack as a usb modem on a mac

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Dgital

im not sure if you guys allready know how do this or not, but i couldnt find anything about it, so i thought id post. I figured out this morning how to get my blackjack working as a modem for my powerbook via usb.

first off, go to start > settings > connections > usb on the phone and change it to modem. then go to system preferences > network on the mac. it should show a new connection called "SAMSUNG CDMA Technologies." select that one and go to the tcp/ip tab. pick using ppp for ipv4. then go to the ppp tab. use WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM for the account name and CINGULAR1 for the password. fill in*99# for the phone number. then go to the modem tab. i got it working using the I-O DATA USB2-PCADP script.

it might work using other scripts, i havent tried too many of them. some might even work better. i dunno. i hope this helps some of you. its not as convenient as bluetooth, but it works.

Dgital,

Thank you very much for this post, it solved my problem!!!

I have a question for you, does your phone charge while you are connected to it via USB to your Mac?

it charges when i have the phone set to activesync and plug it in, but not when its set to modem

Posted by: SangLad

I get disconnected with your settings... Am I missing something? I am using MacBook and BJ.

Posted by: kepmad

Not working on this end. I have been trying every combination of settings and it is a no go. Keep getting the message to check setting. Under what is up? Any advice.

Jeff

Posted by: Dgital

you might want to try playing around with different modem scripts. i found that one to work for me, but others might work more reliably or better with your machine.

Posted by: HectorV

Wirelessly posted (SAMSUNG-SGH-I607/I607FG1 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; Smartphone; 320x240) UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

You have to uncheck the "wait for dial tone" under the modem tab. And if it hangs up yry again, on my BJ it works usually the second time.

Posted by: rhsauer

This worked for me, and is great -- thanks very much. One observation -- my speeds, according to speakeasy/speedtest, were about 280 down and 100 up. It was much faster when tethering under Windows. Any thoughts? I'm very happy to be able to tether at all on the Mac!

Posted by: dude4242

i have tried everything you guys said and more and still its not working anyone else have this problem>>

Posted by: tfvdw2at

I have the Blackjack attached to the Mac with the USB cable. The Mac recognizes the phone, in other words it shows up as a modem port. I tried Dgital's directions to no avail. I downloaded some scripts from the Ross Barkman page and with the one called "Windows Mobile GMS 460K" the machine does the following:

Contacting PPP Server...
Establishing Connection...
Authenticating User...
Disconnecting...

I put the SIM card back into my old SE s710a, changed the Telephone number in the Network System Preferences panel to wap@cingular and connected no problems.

I am running 10.4.8, PowerBook G4, 1.33 GHz, 1 Gig RAM, unlimited data plan with Cingular.

I would love any advice someone can provide to connect me over USB or Bluetooth.

Thanks,

Greg

I've been tethering my BlackJack with OS X since Thursday... I'm using the 3G modem scripts available here: http://www.taniwha.org.uk/

I'll try to post a tutorial when I've got some more time!

Basically:
- Configure BlackJack to be USB modem
- Enable Internet sharing over USB on BlackJack (not sure if you need this)
- Plug BlackJack into Mac and it'll appear under network prefs
- Setup the modem script according to the instructions in the link above
- You'll need to know your WAP settings (Google WAP.CINGULAR)

Good luck L)

- Enable Internet sharing over USB on BlackJack (not sure if you need this)

How do I do this on BJ? sorry, I am new to this...

Navigate to \Windows in the "File Explorer" and run "Internet Sharing"

This is not a necessary step for USB tethering. I suspect something is provisioned improperly on the user's account.

Posted by: ajpprc

So I got this set up and running, I'm very happy to be able to use my cell as a modem for my macbook again, but I am dissapointed in the speeds, I've been getting ~225kbps on dslreports. But, whatever, at least I can get online where I need to .

Posted by: kepmad

Still having issues. I get the message "The Modem has unexpectedly hungup...."

Question: Are all of you that got it to work running is EVDO or 3G areas?

Jeff

Posted by: dude4242

i have tried everything and nothing works has anyone got it to work when it didnt for them at first. i have tried everything and nothing works.

Posted by: tfvdw2at

I am still having issues. I believe that I have removed the possibility that there is an issue with my account in that I have been able to connect with my old phone, using the same SIM, with no problem. The log on Internet Connect gives me the following when I try to connect:

Tue Nov 21 08:27:10 2006 : Windows Mobile GSM 460k
Tue Nov 21 08:27:15 2006 : Dialling *99#
Tue Nov 21 08:27:19 2006 : Serial connection established.
Tue Nov 21 08:27:19 2006 : Using interface ppp0
Tue Nov 21 08:27:19 2006 : Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cu.usbmodem1B11
Tue Nov 21 08:27:21 2006 : CHAP authentication succeeded
Tue Nov 21 08:27:22 2006 : Hangup (SIGHUP)
Tue Nov 21 08:27:22 2006 : Modem hangup
Tue Nov 21 08:27:22 2006 : Connection terminated.

Tankgrl...any thoughts? I have tried to two "Generic 3G scripts from http://www.taniwha.org.uk/ with no luck. I have enabled Internet Sharing on the phone. That did not make a difference.

Any advice would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance,

Greg

For those who can get the BJ to work as a modem with MAC, what type of data plan do you folks have? I initially had smartphone unlimited, but I have changed it to unlimited media net, so that I can view cingular video with BJ (I think it is the 29.99 one with 1000 SMS).

Thanks.

Posted by: Dgital

I have the MediaMax plan (the one with unlimited data and 1000 texts)

Ive had some issues with it disconnecting, but i just dial again and it connects up fine

Posted by: SangLad

I have the exact same plan as you, Dgital, but I can not get my MacBook to connect to the internet using BJ as an modem....

I have yet to get a script that works. This is the output. It appears to authenticate but then hangs up.

Tue Nov 21 20:00:05 2006 : Windows Mobile GSM 460k
Tue Nov 21 20:00:06 2006 : Dialling *99#
Tue Nov 21 20:00:10 2006 : Serial connection established.

Tue Nov 21 20:00:13 2006 : Hangup (SIGHUP)
Tue Nov 21 20:00:13 2006 : Modem hangup
Tue Nov 21 20:00:13 2006 : Connection terminated.

I am not sure what is the issue. Any other script suggestions?

Michael

Posted by: talkatron

To chime it, tethering did not work for me either. My log is very similar to Michael's. I tried three scripts: the USB2 one, the Windows GSM 460K one from the third party site, and the au CDMA modem one.

Posted by: dude4242

well if usb isnt going to work for mac i hope that someone has found a bluetooth alternative?

Posted by: ChromeBro

The first post instructions on this thread work great for me on the 1st try. I have a new 17" MacBook Pro Core2Duo. I'm in St. Louis with HSDPA. The phone's display reads "3G" all over the city as it does now while I'm connected to the Internet.

I think the problems most of you are having are related to your data plan. There has been some discussion and confusion about the restrictions of the various Cingular data plans and I don't understand the nuances of all the plans.

But I have PDAConnect Unlimited Data. From my understanding, the cheaper plans aren't supported for modem use and people get away with it sometimes but they may now be aborting connection attempts thru those plans on this phone, I don't know. Can anyone give us a rundown on what all the data plans are for exactly?

I would definitely prefer a cheaper plan than $39.99 a month. I also would rather connect via Bluetooth so I can have unlimited AC power on the USB port while on the Internet.

Maybe the USB Y-splitter would let you connect both power and data together?

Just got my black jack today and tried every modem script from that website until i found one that worked. I used the blackberry 3g cid1 and cid3. Both were getting around 860 down and about 348 up on speakeasy the only difference was that i had to change the access point back to wap.cingular to get them to connect. When I got home it wouldn't connect and unexpectedly hungup. I turned the phone off and on and it began working again

don't forget to get under ppp options and check Send PPP echo packets and uncheck Use TCP header compression. I also unchecked redial if busy

under the modem uncheck both enable error and wait for dial tone.
I tried the *99# several times with several modem scripts with no luck.

I hope this helps.

http://www.taniwha.org.uk/

download the blackberry scripts. For some reason they worked!

Posted by: kepmad

It Works, after SO many attempts it works!!!!

Did as the guy above outlines and it worked the first time for me, but to clear up a point use "wap.cingular" as the phone number in the network control panel.

best of luck....

Is there anyway to connect to the Mac via Bluetooth??

It wasn't working for me either until i rebooted my BJ and then it worked great! Averaged around 1100kbps here in Chicago... My wireless at the hotel was around 1300kbps.... i'm pretty stoked.

Thanks,

Congrats.

I noticed today that I couldn't get on today up in Nashville unless I rebooted my Mac and restarted the phone. Then after I get done, I have to switch back to activesync before I disconnect the USB cable or the phone's internet locks up and won't go beyond the proxy unless I reboot the phone again. Its a big pain to do all this but for the few times I will be tethering and the speed it is well worth it. I hit 900kbps up here. I again tried some other scripts today and the blackberry cids are the only ones I can get to work.

Posted by: kepmad

I wrote earlier that I had it working (see above). That was on an Edge network in Oregon. I traveled to San Fran and tried the same settings on a 3G network and no luck. I didn't have time to play, but could we need different log in and scripts based on location? That would SUCK.

Cheers...

Posted by: jdec141

I was on the 3G network in Memphis when I first did it and had no problems disconnecting from the computer and reconnecting and having it work. I came to Nashville, also 3G, and had to reboot my computer and my phone to get them to hook up. I lowered the phone down to Edge to see what would happen and I couldn't connect so I don't know. Were you able to get on the EDGE network with the Blackberry script and wap.cingular?

thanks

jdec141,

The Blackberry scritps worked for me.

Thanks for taking the time to experiment and post.

I went through all of the ???? post in the Blackjack released!!! thread and found out that there is another script just for tethering. it is the WWAN. It uses all of the same set ups listed above but *99# is the phone number. It connects really quick (faster than the blackjact script) and I went to speakeasy and tested it at 1000 kbs up and 310 down avg. last night. I didn't have to reboot anything to get it to work. I unplugged and plugged in again and it worked every time. I'm beginning to think the reboot thing was due to Nashville being new to 3G. By the time I left I wasn't having to reboot to get the Blackberry scripts to work either.

Posted by: SangLad

do you guys have PDA unlimited plan or the unlimited medianet?

Posted by: tfvdw2at

I have MediaNet Unlimited, $19.99. It is what I have had for about a year and a half and I ordered the Blackjack online by "upgrading device" and kept my plan the same.

Posted by: gthing

Mine was working yesterday. I am on the $19.99 medimax 200 plan. I changed over from the pdaconnect and it still worked all day yesterday. I called an confirmed that I was on the mediamax 200 plan with cingular, and they said it was already in effect.

Today, no matter what I try, I can't get it to connect. By the way, I am convinced that the plans are essentially the same (except for a few things with the $80 plan like CSD), and Cingular either can't tell or doesn't care if you tether. I've been doing it on my Treo for well over a year.

For those of you having problems - give pda2net a try. It configures everything by itself. You just start the program and hit connect - I had that working well before I could get it working natively in OS X. It's free to try and may solve your problems.

I can still connect with launch2net by the way, so there is no problem with my plan.

try going into the Utilities Folder under the Go on the Finder. Goto disk utility and repair disk permissions. I don't know why but my connections have been more consistent since I have done this.

Posted by: gthing

Couldn't get it working again. Did a hard reset on the phone (also repaired disk permissions). Works great now. I just have to load all my crap back on there...

Posted by: wickedmixer

Yeah I am having the same problem with the hang up. Keeps telling me to check settings on my mackbook 2ghz.... using the same setting and moden scripts you guys are suggesting.. anyone break through this problem?

Thanks

Posted by: wickedmixer

I just got it to work- I went with wap.cingular for the tele number and it went.

Thanks for the posts guys....

just like to throw in my 2 cents...
after 3 days of unsuccessful attempts. i've now got USB tethering working. i followed the main post until, but had 3 variations.
1. i unchecked the "wait for dual tone before dialing" in sys prefs/network/modem tab
2. i used the "http://www.taniwha.org.uk/files/" Generic GPRS CID1 script
3. i changed the telephone number to "wap.cingular"

and it popped right up... it's not very fast - but it werks...
fyi - this is in milwaukee, with EDGE, as HSDPA is not available yet... i'll try the 3G script in chicago on my way to work monday.

this is a black core 2 duo macbook. i've also got a dual boot with xp, i'll test speeds accordingly.

Posted by: kepmad

Just a follow-up to an earlier post. I just tried again in San Francisco as I outlined earlier and on the first try it did not work after doing some surfing from the phone. Then powered off and on and it work on the first try. Look for my earlier post on settings.

Lesson Learned: Power Cycle before trying to connect.

Take Care

Us T-mobile people are having a heluva time trying to USB tether our T-mobile Dashes to OS X. Anyone want to lend a helping hand and let us know what exists in their registry for us to maybe hack our Dashes to tether?

Downloading and installing the modem script above did it for me. It works great.

I've gone through all the steps as far as configuration is concerned, but I dont know how to dial in. I'm using a 15" g4 powerbook 1.33 ghz

thanks

i saw this article a while ago and decided to check it out cause my connection wasnt working perfectly. the method outlined worked perfectly for me. hopefully it will help you guys that are having trouble

Posted by: drugs!

i got it to connect last night by checking off that tab about modem error under the modem tab in the configuration. It was unbelievably slow and wouldn't even sign onto instant messenger. Now it doesn't connect at all again. Any help?

Posted by: dwlace01

i used the blackberry scripts and get 1000 kbps down and about half that up. instead of using *99# as my telephone number, i used wap.cingular and it worked great.

there is a post earlier in this thread on page 1 or 2 that details the settings i used...it is the only one that talks about the blackberry scripts.

Works for me. Couldn't get ISP.CINGULAR to negotiate a PPP connection even though ISP.CINGULAR works fine on the phone itself and I have access via ISP.CINGULAR and EDGE with Nokia and SE phones, but tethering with the BJ worked with WAP.CINGULAR in 3G mode. I'm a bit puzzled about that. I do have the actual DTCNUNL option on my plan.

Performance was about on par with Sprint EV-DO (rev 0) in terms of bandwidth. The latency was somewhat better than EV-DO. Around 1Mbps on the downlink. I was only seeing about 40kbps on the uplink - a little slower than the Sprint card, but maybe it was a fluke. I was actually a little disappointed given the hype about HSDPA.

I wonder, what was Samsung thinking though? There is no way to charge the phone while tethered as it can't take power from USB, so that limits tethered sessions to about an hour or however long the battery lasts on UMTS. If the Bluetooth DUN profile worked as advertised, this wouldn't be an issue really, we could just use Bluetooth, although that would limit speed somewhat.

There are a few things I really like about this phone. Mostly the form factor, keyboard, RF performance, and the data connection speeds. However, there is also a lot to hate: WM5 bugs and awkwardness (I have a long list), lack of Bluetooth DUN, lack of USB charging while tethered, and antenna positioning at the bottom of the phone.

I went and ordered a UMTS PCMCIA card on ebay for significantly less than $100 shipped. I guess I'll just use that for any extended tethering, at least until I upgrade to a Macbook. Then I'll probably put my SIM back in my Nokia E70-2, and call the whole Blackjack thing a failed experiment. I'd rather one device to do everything - but it seems that I'm not going to get that yet.
