S55 and ATW in SF Bay area

I've been fairly quiet for a while. So now the question.
As we-all know here in this forum & elsewhere, you can neither initiate nor receive voice calls on AT&T in the SF Bay area with the S55; others have said this is due to the Ericsson central cell equipment.
In all FW versions, if someone tries to call me, they simply get transferred immediately to voice mail.
I have upgraded FW to each version beyond 04, which it came with. For 04, 05 & 07. In those versions, when I have tried to call, I get a beep-beep-beep response. Since upgrading to 08 or 09, I get a short warble now, then the beep-beep-beep. The warble sounds like a modem actually. I enter the phone number, then press the send (grn key). W/in a second, I hear what to me sounds like sounds of characters going from a PC through a modem (i.e., when the modem is calling out at the first steps of a modem connection).
So, anyone know what's up with the warble?
Oh. And BTW: Anyone know more about WHEN the S56 will be available on ATW (supposedly in March - it's here now)?
I did not post this on the AT&T forum, not wanting to double post. But any info would greatly help. It's frustrating having such a phone that I can't use (yet maybe). In the meantime, I'm using either of my t68i or r520m (no comments about this back, please).

From what I have heard doing f/w upgrades won't help when it comes to using a s55 on AT&T. Everyone I know have had no luck and switched carriers to use their s55. As for the s56 I have heard that it should be available by the end of March with Cingular (that's their ETA) so hopefully it won't be too long.
