Questions about buying a device from Vodafone

OK I live in the Dallas, Texas are of the US. I will be visiting the UK (Scotland) in a couple of weeks. I really want a Palm 750v however I am not willing to pay $750 for an unlocked one.

So what is the process like to purchase a device from them. If I had to get service what do they use? Over in the US we have Social Security Numbers. What I was thinking is if I sign up for service and get a great deal on the phone. Then cancel the service and pay the fee for breaking the contract. Would this work?

they would want you to pay the rest of the contract (ie 12-18 months of line rental) though you will probably have really hard time getting a pay monthly contract, i would say a bloody hard time getting a contract! your best bet really is either trying ebay or picking up a sim free version!

Thanks I thought I would ask.

yeah, and as a non uk resident you have almost zero chance of getting a contract.......hey well at least ya know now!

What do they do with people who get service in both the UK and the US? Do they just do the pre paid?

I will be making at least 4 or 5 trips per year to Edinburgh. With the 1.29 per minute price I can see having service in the UK paying for the full year might be cheaper.

My cousin who just arrived here to study walked into carphone warehouse and got a phone on the spot. The only ID she was asked for was the student ID so 02 wouldn't take 50 pounds for deposit. They also took her debit card to put through and that was it.

Not sure if that was a once off mistake or what though?!

carphone warehouse probably have different procedures..with a debit card they may use that for all billing for the life of the contract...

Carphone warehouse no longer sell Vodafone contracts. I'm also suprised that they only wanted student ID. At least some for of proof of residency, passports, drivers license etc.
edit, of course, she's got a pre-pay phone....

no, she didnt' get a pre-pay phone
She got the Samsung D900 on contract for 12 months
She didn't have a credit card account then so i was going to be paying it and we were only going to browse so we didn't have a passport but she never got asked for it
I didn't realise they stopped doing contracts with vodaphone.soz

Firstly, Carphone Warehouse i think *do* do Vodafone contracts, just that they are done directly with Vodafone now, rather than CPW handling their own billing which used to be the case and they handed it over directly to Vodafone sometime in Spring 2006. The same with their O2 division.

As for CPW signing new contracts they *SHOULD* ask for either ID (passport would work) and/or proof of residence at said address (e.g. water, electricity bill). I am not sure you need proof of citizenship or what not. I am pretty certain your friend got off light, but these things are pretty standard, and not just CPW require these. Your friend got off lucky i suppose.

I work for Vodafone and can shed some light on what you値l need to open a pay monthly contract in a Vodafone store.

If you池e a UK resident, you値l need to provide a valid driving licence or credit card. If you can稚 provide this then you値l need two alternative proofs, such as a valid student card and a utility bill.

Non UK residents can still apply for a Vodafone contract, though they値l be asked to pay a deposit, usually 」100. They値l also need to provide proof of employment and another proof, such as a passport or non UK driving license.

Hope this helps.
