8525 Battery Life

Now that people have had the phone for a few days...what kind of battery life is everyone seeing?

I have umts/hsdpa coverage all day and with "normal" use I have 40% left at the end of the day. I dont think my battery will power my phone for more than 24hrs. Probably doesn't help that my Gmail gets sync'd every 10 minutes...

UMTS = dead batteries =

Do you just stay connected via umts/edge all the time? I was trying to figure out if there was a way to kill the connection after you get mail. Seems like that would save tremendously on battery life. My 8525 is probably the same as yours although I've only had it since Monday evening so I've been using it alot. Looks like with heavy use I'll atleast get a day out of it.

Same here 40% at the end of the day but I am always connected to the 3G getting push email.

If you tap on the "U" icon it'll display the amount of time its been connected...seems like it's always connected unless you sync to the pc. EDGE is better, doesn't stay connected like UMTS.

Yes, it is always connected unless you manually disconnect the connection. Do most of you just leave it connected? I've been manually disconnecting it after I finish surfing the web or after I check email although sometimes I forget. Is this something I shouldnt even concern myself with?

I do...too much work otherwise! Cause then I'd have to wait while it connects to open up a webpage (kinda defeats the purpose of 3G if you gotta wait IMHO).

I'll tell you that using orb/slingbox will kill your battery. I streamed tv for an hour today, made a few phone calls and did some PIM work and its down to 30% now.

Posted by: TheFuzz

Gonna have to chime in. Battery life is woefully inadequate compared to my 8125. I was able to use the phone usually for two days doing an average amount of emails, sms, calls and surfing. The 8525 will drop to 90% after an hour of very light use. And it just continues to fall off from there. I love the phone, hate the battery!

It's died on me everyday I don't stop to charge it in the office. I keep Agile open and I also use Push email... I'm sure it's thanks to UMTS :/

Posted by: jscro

So is there an extended battery available? Right now, I'm leaving it connected via USB whenever I'm in the office, and plugging it at home overnight. I'd rather not have to leave it connected during the day though.

Wifi destorys the battery life.

Actually, it's thanks for DirectPush ..

Posted by: rosullivan04

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the advantage with DirectPush is that it uses less battery life than randomly checking your email. It should only be sending and receiving data when it gets a message notification, right (other than the heartbeat)?

Posted by: gravejoker

Well ... not really ... The way MS DirectPush is implemented is that the device keeps a constant connection open to the server all the time (8,10 hrs or more) ... the server monitors the folders and if anything changes, sends a notification to the device .. the device then syncs ...

my battery life is better than I expected. I mean, it hasn't dropped below 80%. that's with moderate use.

Posted by: Deadem

Same here great battery life. I don't use push though.

Posted by: KeithKman

I have charged mine about four times now. Let it go from a full charge down to 10%. Seems to be getting better.

I do want a higher capacity battery though.

OK, a little update from today's use. I have made loads of calls. I have been on the phone roughly 1 hour (total) talk time since 5pm eastern time. I have not used the internet, checked email but have sent/received approximately 25 test messages. Also, I have Xpress Mail running in the background. As of 8:17pm eastern, I am at 50% battery from 100% at 3:00pm today.

Cingular 8525 with Goodlink in a UMTS area and I get only 14 hours of battery life with low-moderate use of email alone. I turn it on at 6:45am each morning and power is down to 10-20% by 7-8pm and I've barely used the phone. Not great battery life compared to my 8125, which was overclocked to 240mhz and never died, even with heavy voice and Goodlink email usage.

I haven't traveled with my new 8525 yet but when I use it with heavy calling, I'm sure it wont get more than 12 hours, tops. I just bought a second battery because of this. I know battery life with Goodlink on the 8525 is a known issue, and is one of the reasons Cingular delayed its release, but it's REALLY BAD. I have a feeling Cingular is going to be getting more than a few 8525 returns because of poor battery life. If you use Goodlink on the 8525 you 100% need a second battery using the stock ROM.

Where did you get your battery?

Posted by: Krash7172

I'm still using AUTD with my exchange server and I found that I get 20 hrs on UMTS and about 2 days on EDGE.

Just a question - How is MS direct push different than AKU2 with exchange? Same thing? I haven't bothered messing with it yet. I still have several devices using AUTD and it works flawlessly. The only drawback is paying for a larger message plan. This may be a workaround for exchange users who are unahppy with battery life.

For general browsing I find that EDGE is faster due to lengthy connect times with UTMS. And I have tried open DNS, etc...

i bought my extra battery from mobile planet.

as an update from my previous post, the battery life is woefully inadequate. i'm in SF on business, which btw has the best UMTS coverage from the city all the way down to San Jose, and my battery has not lasted more than 8-10 hrs with heavy voice, data (goodlink) and tomtom gps software usage.

cingular had better cook up an improved rom soon, or start shipping it with a second battery. it is VERY BAD.

Posted by: chrismuro

is there a way to charge the second battery outside of the phone? i can only find the spare battery not the charger

Posted by: gravejoker

There's a 3000mAh battery now available for the 8525 ..

You got a link?

Posted by: jsmcguir

my battery life sucks too. then again, i have 2 pop email accounts that i have checked twice an hour, plus push email with mail2web. i get 8 hours if i'm lucky. usually less. my 8125 had this plus a goodlink account (i stretch myself pretty thin) and it would give me about two days of moderate use. guess i'm always carrying a charger.

Posted by: TheFuzz

Well, I use Xpress Mail as my only push service, log approx. 2hrs a day talk time, and surf the net and text quite a bit. By the time I am about one hour into a full charge my phone dips to 80%. I unplugged today at 10:30 am and began my usual usage pattern. By 8pm I was at 30%. This is really atrocious. I really like the improvement of this phone over my 8125, but, the battery life is absolutely killing me. I can't believe I am going to have to buy a second battery and desktop charger for it in order to continue using the phone regularly.

Cingular needs an updated ROM, or as the other poster stated, start shipping a second battery and desktop charger for it.

bleh it sticks out so much...

are there even any cases that would be able to hold that thing?

I have been going 2-3 days between charges. But that is without any UMTS or WiFi usage. I just set up the MediaMax200 plan today. I'm sure my battery will dwindle a lot faster now. Oh well its worth it to browse HoFo and post while I'm relaxing outside.

Yeah, but i meant like leather cases/holsters, sorry wasnt too specific.

Posted by: TheFuzz

Update: I charged my 8525 last night with it being turned off. I turned it on, and began my usual usage at 10:30 am. As of now, I am at 60%. In the past, I consistently been at 40% by now. So, maybe by turning off the device and charging the phone, it makes a difference?

Can others test this theory, see if you get similiar results?
