3rd Party Apps with Treo 680?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Can anyone confirm whether or not 3rd party apps such as Zlauncher, Lightwav, Pocket tunes, Treoguard, etc. will work with the 680?

Posted by: michelkenny

They should since it is still running PalmOS.

I don't see why not. Palm OS is Palm OS. And if it works on the 700p I'm even more sure.

you only need to worry if they update the OS. so if they decided to run coblat on the 680 then worry if apps are compaible but you don't have to worry cuz palm won't update their os for quiet some time.

The only app that might not works is skinner. Cause of the new phone UI.

I think Pocket Tunes comes installed on the 680.

Palm will never use Cobalt. Ever. Plus you can't really upgrade the OS.

"COLBOLT" yeah i know just stating an example.

Why can't you update the OS?

You most certainly can. The exact same process would be used as with updating the firmware. The only reason we won't be able to upgrade the OS is because Palm will never release one for us, not because it can't be done.

Actually, you can't, for the reason you just gave.

Doh! And to think I paid for this to use with the 650. And I'll miss Skinner.

Posted by: fishera

I paid for PocketTunes also! But I have been using it for about a year, so it was worth it.

I think the Treo 680 and Treo 700p run the same Palm OS if I am correct, Palm OS 5.4.9. So any issues found when running apps on the Treo 700p will be the same as the Treo 680.

When is ALP coming out?

Posted by: Legodude522

ALP comes out soon I think it was. Don't know if Palm is gonna use it or not. Also Palm's secret 3rd business comes out next year. PDA, Smartphone, and ???

Posted by: fishera

I don't this Palm will use ALP. If anything I think they will develop on Palm OS 5 or start using Palm OS 6 Cobalt and not tell anyone it is Cobalt.

I vote Palm is going to start making UMPC. If you ask me, there is a reason the Treo doesn't have wifi!

I was only stating the process of upgrading the OS is possible, not that a new version will be released for us to upgrade to. My post was quite clear

Yes, they both run the same OS, but it doesn't necessarily mean all issues will be the same. Keep in mind, as jreagles16 stated, the 680 has a new phone app that will likely render most (if not all) current skinning apps incompatible. Also since the 700p is running on an EvDO/CDMA network while the 680 is on EDGE/GSM, there may be compatibility issues with some apps that rely on those functions as well. Probably 90-95% of apps will work fine, but I'm sure there will be a few that will need some help.

A few apps do have an issue (BrightCam is one that doesn't work on the 680 for example). But in my testings, I haven't found all that many that do not work. Some apps do need to be slightly updated to address the move in the Home hard button, but other than that and the Phone app, most apps will be just fine.

As a note, the PocketTunes that comes with the 680 is the basic version. If you purchased the Deluxe version, then check with Normsoft about moving your reg code to the new device and things will be just fine.

will Blackberry connect work on the 680??? is there a place to download it?

Posted by: arjwright

SimpleCell, BBConnect has not yet been certified to work with the 680 just yet. I am guessing that by Feb that we would know that as many of the 680 releases worldwide would have happened and sifficient testing would have ensued already towards it.

Won't Treo 700p and Treo 680 come at the exact same time because they both run the same Palm OS, 5.4.9.
