Tethering 8525 with bluetooth

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just bought a 8525 with the unlimited data plan and I'm trying to tether it to my laptop. I have a Kensington bluetooth adapter and the only option I get is to use the 8525 for dial up. I've search the forums and found bits and pieces of what to do. Can someone point me in the right direction to make this work? Is there any special setting I need to make on the phone? Thanks for any help.

Im in the same boat idk wtf...

I use DUN through the BT to tether the device... I used to do this with my T616 so it had some of the DUN settings saved. It works...

I don't have all the settings for DUN:
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password:
Dial:*99#

I'll look for the password, it should be on the forums somewhere...

With that said, the following links describe how to use the 8525 as a Wireless Modem:

Good luck! And report back!

Can you teather with media max?

I wanted to share that I spent all of last weekend with Bluetooth tethering issues and finally got it to work properly using the settings previously listed.

Now here is the bad news; it is slow. I get speeds up to 800k on the phone and only get about 200k on Bluetooth. I found that if you use the actual USB sync cable and set up your connection this way, you can get speed that are much faster, up to the speeds your phone normally gets. I test at 600k to 800k with a cable.

So you might want to consider if you really have to use Bluetooth, or if you mind having to hook them up together to get better results.

Good luck.

argoldst,
I'm not sure about Media Max. I have the unlimited data plan. I would assume it would work fine.

highlordkram, I will have to try the usb connection. I'm getting around 350K with bluetooth.

Same here only ~300 with bluetooth.

I've noticed that throughput suffers over BT... but it's convenient and eye catching.

MediaMax works fine with tethering. There are some "chicken littles" who will tell you the Cingular police will get you and the fine print says you can't. If Cingular was concerned about it they would make it clear that you can't and not provide instructions on how to do it:
https://www.cingular.com/support/setupOTW.do

On your PC, it will tether to the 8525 with a dial-up connection, but the speed will be faster than dial up.

You can check your connection speed here:

Hmmm I need to try this out.

Unfortunately there are people who sneak through by using the incorrect data plans for tethering, however there are also the ones who are caught and charged accordingly for incorrectly using data plans. For someone who consistently tethers he/she will need to be on a Data Connect/Laptop Connect plan as it accesses the proper gateway rather than a WAP gateway that's suited for more casual web browsing through a phone.

As for setting up for BT tethering I can provide the following however it reference D-link but any BT attachment with dial-up networking bt profile will work.

Prerequisite

Cingular 8525 PDA purchased through Cingular.

D-Link USB Bluetooth Adapter with accompanying software application. Ensure the most recent software is properly installed from the accompanying CD or by visiting support.dlink.com. Select the appropriate D-Link USB Bluetooth Adaptor from the drop down menu. Download, unzip, and install the most recent driver.

User should be logged in as Administrator or have administrator privileges to modify system files.

On the PDA, tap on Yes to add the PC to the device list.
Type the same numerical Passkey (Bluetooth PIN Code) as entered on the PC, and tap on Next.
Once the connection is complete, tap to check Dialup Networking. (***Note: It may take several moments for the connection to complete.)

Thanks. Your instructions enabled me to get further than I had before using Bluetooth for tethering. However, I still was getting an error message. I then used:

WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM in place of ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM in the User name field

and I also changed the modem init string to AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.cingular" in place of AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","isp.cingular"

and it worked

Note that both changes were necessary; one alone didn't work. I don't know why this is the case. Perhaps the way my account is provisioned. (I do have data connect on my account according to Cingular).
