JAVA question treo 700p

I am considering buying the 700p from sprint for a few reasons
a) picture mail (i was informed the 700w cannot do this)
b) need more of a phone, then pda (70/30).

I send a lot of international text messages, and sprint is eating me up with .15cents a text and from work i can use this website (http://chat.mobilinksms.com) and it allows for me to hold a convo (like aim) threw this site and avoid the international text charge to me.

now i went to a few different stores and tried almost all pda phones to access this site. they all require a java applet to work. while being at the store i tried to get it to work, but it didnt (the rep said it must not support the type of java i need) supposidly the rep claimed it would work with palm os. is this true?

thanks in advance for yalls assistance, im a total noob when it comes to pda phones.

You have to manually install Java on Treos. Now, *I* can't get it to work on my 700p, but others have been able to. But there are other options for IMing that go through data, not texts, so either way you're good.

The Java thing is interesting. I have the Java files and can send them to you if you PM me with your email address. Once the Java files are installed in main memory, global preferences can be set and then go to the site you want to get the applet from and download it to the DEVICE (also known as Installer), not the card. Once downloaded you can access it thru the IBM icon displayed by the launcher or tap the Java applet icon (it should be there also) and go from there. I have installed about 15 or so applets successfully and have kept three of them. Ben

I can send to whomever the bell tolls for (that is who wants it) the Java installation files I use if anyone else needs them. Once installed properly, the rest of the story is not too difficult. Ben

The issue I'm having is- I install all the necessary files, but java just doesn't show up on the screen & its not detected by any apps. its listed in every file explorer but its just not there! Its like a ghost or something. Its wierd & I can't figure it out.

The Treo can run J2ME, not J2RE/J2SE. You won't be able to use that site on your Treo unless they've developed a J2ME app for cell/pda use. I don't think this is going to work for you, da-nteg.

Send me a PM with your email address and I will mail you the Java files I use. Those files work on both my Sprint 600, 650 and 700P (though I did sell the 600 last week). Ben
