If you can find the hacked version of the uk aim mobile, it goes off of data, it has a sign on button, and won't let you signon/connect if you aren't connected to gprs some how... I also believe agile messenger goes off of data also..

Posted by: DubA169

sorry but what is the UK hacked aim mobile? sorry i really dont know much about phones

Posted by: Mikey D

IM+ or Agile would be my recommendations

Another question, for a soon to be 8525 owner: Are there data-only messenger programs available for the 8525? I ask because I'm coming from a BB and on the BB site, I can or have downloaded the data versions of Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk.

You can use AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, Jabber, Google on IM+. Agile I know you can use at least AIM, Yahoo, MSN, and ICQ.

Here's the link to the aol version of aim - not sure what other people referred to by 'hacked'.

http://info.aol.co.uk/aim/wince/index.html

IMHO, the UK version of aim is not as good as Verichat, which i think is a good program, and is pretty reliable and stable, despite the annual cost. The UK version of AIM is very short on features....there really are none. Not even a menu to change any options.

One thing I have been using the UK version for is to clean up my groups and lists. Other than that, I'm happy with Verichat.

Is there any way to emulate the messenger client from a device like the sidekick from a device like the 8525? (this is kinda off topic but not)

Posted by: rctoyguy

I just downloaded IM+, and I'll give it a shot - looks like what I need (AOL, Google primarily) --- but I'm cheap, and $40 ain't cheap - LOL - are there any free apps that will handle just AOL and GoogleTalk? For that matter, what about just GoogleTalk?

Posted by: Playstation3

That's exactly one thing I'm looking for for my 8525 as well. Where do you get Agile Messenger? Thanks...

Posted by: abricko

GRRR stuff like this frustrates me... all these people who don't know how to use their PDAs end up getting them first, I'm still waiting for my local cingular store to call me when they get their shipments in!

sorry for the rant!

Posted by: rctoyguy

well, I know how to use the PDA - just looking for cheap ways to accomplish things the "always on" service will make cool.

I got mine last Monday - it is for work, so the rep we use brought it to me. My brother got his the day before me, by just walking into a local Cingular store - although I think it was the last one they had. - That's in Birmingham, Alabama - surpising home of 3G! LOL
sorry for the brag...

Why don't you order it through customer service? They have them in stock.

thanks for the response ppl and one more question as serkle asked is tehre anyway to emulate the aim from the sidekick? thanks

thanks for the replies

For those that mentioned Sidekick like IM'ing funcitonality....this is exactly what I was looking for...and from using Agile for the last couple of days....this is really a good look....u can even do stuff like push to talk and send files thru IM...I think after the trial I will be buying this. My one concern however, is that with using texting over data...isn't there the increased risk of missing messages. For instance yesterday I was IMing...and got into an elevator and lost a signal but was still logged in....later on I found out that someone had sent me a message but that I didn't get it....no sure if this is due to dropped data packets or sumthing. Yeah I also find that when I'm logged in to Agile and lose a signal whether it be underground or on an elevator or whatever...it acts funky when I come back online. It seems that with a text based IM is more reliable for delivering messages even when the connection is lost.

^^ I'm a bit confused? so are you saying that the 8525 txts over data (like sms)? or you mean by way of IM messages?

I was talking about IM functionality....there are sum applications that do IM over SMS and others thru data....those cheapies among us don't want to have to pay SMS fees for our IM....programs like Agile do this over data....thas all I was sayin.

Posted by: DubA169

thanks for the info on agile. What is the diff between have ims thru data and thru sms? i just dont want to be on aim getting charged for every im i sent and i dont want to be limited to a certain number of txt message a month

Data is like using your IM at home. Using your network.

Through SMS, you need a text plan to send SMS, MMS, and technically IM messages. Cingular calls it the all in one package. SMS, MMS, IM, Video.

In technicality, they can monitor SMS, MMS, Video but IM they can't if you use softwares such as Agile, IM+ and Verichat (i'm sure there others out there). If they were able to monitor IM messages, they will charge your for every incoming as well as outgoing (obviously). This will take a toll on your text plan.

The option then is to get these softwares (Verichat, IM+, Agile) at a cost of yearly plans and IM away to your hearts desire because you will be sending messages over data (internet). Like your computer at home.

Now you can just worry about how many SMS, MMS, Video you are sending to ur friends.

Posted by: DubA169

so if i dont purchase a program like agile and just download AIM on my 8525 those messeages i send and receive will be viewed as text messages?

Posted by: serkle k

^^ they will be sent as IM through DATA, but to be on the "safe side" you should be sure to have the unlimited data plan because of the outrageous data charges you could rack up.

Posted by: cali_kid2k

so the msn messenger dat comes with it charges you as text??

Posted by: DubA169

oo ok cause i was talking to a cingular rep and they said the im in aim would be sent as txt msgs so thats why i tried to get a data im program and also than what is the point of downloading agile or im+?

Posted by: nutnbolt

I dont' think the rep knows what they are talking about. I asked the same question before with other cingular reps and they told me the same thing. Quite honestly, I can't confirm this but these programs (IM+, Agile, Verichat) are all data transmission. How Cingular is able to keep tabs on it as if a message went out through these programs I don't know?

Can anyone confirm?

Posted by: nutnbolt

Oh here is a post about a guy who is asking a similar question about the instant messaging software "OZ" on the BlackJack. The OZ, I'm presuming is a software that comes standard with the Blackjack.

This software, I believe makes the Cingular Reps statement true. I think the software is proprietary to Cingular/Blackjack hence they can technically use it to monitor or use sms transmission.

POST HERE

Posted by: DubA169

^ i dont think they can keep tabs on data messages unless you go over your data plan but lets say you download AIM instead of verichat or agile does it still go under data or would AIM be under text messages?

Posted by: scuzy

OZ = sms base im client, Agile im+ verichat = data base im client. Only way you get charge via SMS is if you use a OZ client, if you use the otehr 3 clients it's data and it's covered in your unlimited data package

Posted by: DubA169

what is AIm then?

Posted by: scuzy

AIM = aol instant messenger there is no AIM client for any of these fones by aol. Most are by thrid party implementing AIM protocol

Oz is also something that comes standard on the blackjack. The other softwares, depending on what type of phone you have, you can download the software for it. Pocket PC, symbian, blackberry, etc. There is no way Cingular can get their hands on your data txt. You can even call the company (Agile, IM+, etc.) to confirm that they use data which we are pretty sure it's 99.9%.

Aim on the other hand, I'm not sure. I don't believe on using one software for just AIM. Why not have all in one package..I say.

I guess that's why there is an AIM Hack version out there. Why it's hacked I don't really know.

Oh here is something I found on the IM+ website under the FAQ.

What are my charges to provider while using IM+?
IM+ has nothing to do with SMS service. IM+ is using your GPRS connection only and you have to pay for amount of information you are sending and receiving.

I'm sure you'll find similar FAQs on the others.

^^ thank you

Can IM+ or Aglie (for those that have it alrdy) allow you to hold on a persons name and u get the options to send them an email such as when I sign in to my pocket MSN. If I click and hold on a person's name I get the options " Send an IM, Send Email, Auto update status, Block, Delete contact and properties" just checking comparability and ease of use thanks in advance ..
