Blackberry 8700 doesn't start up?

Hi,
when I insert the battery into the blackberry, the LED in the top turns on and is red for about 3 seconds then turns off. Nothing else happens, even when I try to switch the power button on.
Any ideas? The battery is not dead.
It worked before, and once in awhile it acts up like this for one reason or another. The software has been fully reloaded. Everything has been wiped/freshly installed.
