It will use data. VeriChat is generally considered to be the best app. It and another app have the capability of keeping you signed on in SMS mode, which will allow you to receive messages via SMS (but not send) when your Treo (I'm assuming you have a Treo) is not connected to the Internet -- however, if you're using a Treo, you can also use the dormant data always-on mode.

Can you explain that SMS feature in VeriChat?

I use VeriChat and it uses the unlimited data connection. I think it is the best program out there on the Palm OS for AIM, MSN, and Yahoo. (ICQ also)

If you're using a Treo and you set VeriChat to use always-on SMS mode, when you shut off or disconnect your Treo, VeriChat's proxy servers keep your screen name signed on. When someone IMs you, their servers forward that IM to your phone's SMS email address. VeriChat on your Treo then intercepts that incoming SMS from the Messaging app and pulls it into Verichat instead, making it appear to be a normal IM. You can type a quick response and hit the 'quick reply' button and it will connect your Treo to the Internet, send the message, and (if you've selected to disconnect the network in SMS mode in the options menu) then disconnect your Treo again. It will only receive messages in SMS, and it will only receive them in SMS if your Treo isn't online. It will send the reply as data. If you hit the chat button instead of the Quick Reply, it will connect your Treo and sign onto VeriChat where you will being using data to chat.

Things are a little different if you use a Palm PDA other than a Treo using SMS mode; for example, if you have a Kyocera 7135, VeriChat will be unable to intercept the incoming SMS, so it will go into your Messaging app like a normal SMS would. From there, you will actually be able to reply via SMS and never connect to the Internet. I'm not sure why you aren't able to choose which method you'd like on the Treo, but that's the way it is.
