I got the gmail Java app to work on the Blackjack

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

BUT the fonts are all screwed up and every time you access the internet the phone VIBRATES ??!? How screwed up is that ?!?!

I followed THESE instructions and also had to set my phone to connect via the internet NOT via WAP network...

-------
Here's a little workaround:
1. Install IBM's virtual JVM : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=279600 (can use either version depending on yer preference where you want to install it)

2. The midlet manager requires the location of .jad and .jar files, enter this url : http://gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gm-G...anced_MIDP2.jad (in case it says during download .jar file was not found try again the link must've dropped)

Posted by: jhruth

It gives me the error

"The application descriptor was missing the required MEDlet-Name field"

but installing from the the URL

http://gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gm-G...anced_MIDP2.jad

works but I think it's reason the fonts are screwed up b/c it's maybe not the correct version of the app ?!?!?

Someone who's smarter than me please help out here... I feel like we're close and making some progress... The Java app that CAME with the Blackjack seems to be the problem.....

Posted by: jhruth

Then I tired installing the Samsung-Advanced version of the app and that was WORSE - the soft buttons didn't work - but it's still connecting...

anyone have the addresses for different versions of the Java App ? We could keep trying different versions until one works?!?!? Maybe one for the Q would work with the same screen size ???

Posted by: jhruth

using THIS... BUT it still vibrates each time it connects to the internet !?!?

I need the IBM Java version 5.7 which doesn't do this supposedly... anyone have that .cab file? If we can make THAT work then I think this will all work !!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found today that the IBM JVM is expecting to use the font nina.ttf which is not available on my Q. I have a new file that tells it to use segoe.ttf and this has fixed many of the font issue in Google Maps and GMail.

You need to download a new fontPaths.jar and replace the copy in lib/jclMidp20/ext

--stefan

BTW: The funny thing is it also seemed to fix the problems I was having where gmaps did not recognize the number keys. Not sure if the two are related or it was just luck.[/url]

For V6 you can turn off the phones vibrate:
Start any Registry edition program and go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Drivers > BuiltIn > NLED

set "Flags" = 8 for vibration.
set "Flags" = 0 for no vibration.

Posted by: thinlyveiled

You are correct in that v5.7 of J9 does not have the vibration problem. You can find it here. Also, Google Maps works with J9; you can fetch it from IE here .

Anyone else trying some of this stuff ? I need help to get this working ?!!?

I thought this was the big issue everyone was pissed off about with the Blackjack and now we're SO close to making it work...

The fonts look fine and the only problem is that it vibrates each time it access the internet....

I mean this in the least abrasive way possible, but it's likely nobody is running out to try the method you've suggested because it doesn't appear to be working properly. I'm not risky enough to try something like this with my brand new Blackjack, at least not until it's confirmed to be working properly.

Posted by: thinlyveiled

It does work, if you download the version of the J9 software I referenced in my post above.

Posted by: jaydub

I had began posting what I did before you replied, but I didn't submit till well after since i walked away from my desk. I didn't see that you had it working.

I hate to say it, but "works for me." Are you receiving some sort of error message?

As of now - it works perfect in the FIRST version of JAVA I installed but VIBRATES upon internet connection

and it worked briefly in the 5.7 version of Java but now hangs.... I deleted my proxies and think that may have screwed things up - going back to add them now...

I think we'll have to get a little risky to get this issue solved but it feels pretty close....

Have you gotten this to allow you to use Opera Mini without having to check yes and ask me next time? That is what I am trying to use.

Opera Mini installs and accesses the internet fine under this version of J9, but it's basically useless because the soft keys aren't properly mapped. I tried using the Q and P keys instead, as suggested elsewhere, but was unsuccessful.

Posted by: jhruth

If you follow the directions posted above everything works well except for the issue with the VIBRATING each time it access the internet.... There is a fix for that but I can't get Regedit to let me change the value I need.... anyone solve that???

Posted by: jhruth

Here's how to unlock the Blackjack so you can make regisrty changes, but I can't do it b/c I have a Mac at home... will have to try when I can get access to a PC with activesync.....

maybe someone can try to fix the vibrate issue?

I have tried both th J9full and J9 Tiny (Downloaded to pc and copied over to phone through AS and ran) Couldnt get Tiny to install cause Resco is weird and I cant get to the actual file. J9Full is installed but when I run Opera it asks Yes allow and ask next time each time I switch pages still.

Posted by: jhruth

It works with the J9 Version of Java except for the phone VIBRATES each time it uses the internet - so we need help fixing THAT issue. If you do the registry hack it stops the phone from vibrating but also just turns off that feature for ALL rings etc....

anyone? we're pretty close here....

Posted by: dre3101

i have tried both installers listed in the thread, but neither works completely for me

the first post's jvm link will exhibit the font and vibration behavior, but will connect to gmail and allow me to read/delete/function...

the other jvm looks MUCH better, but no way to access the smart keys...

i looked on IBM's developer site and could not find a direct link to any j2me JVM's other than Windows Mobile 2003 SE...

???

those of you who have led us to this place - thanks... this is akin to almost being unplugged from the matrix. free our gmail, neo. there is no spoon.

Posted by: thinlyveiled

I now have a fix that works 100% for both Gmail and Google Maps - stay tuned ...

Posted by: Ghettopops

Could one of you that have gotten this to work please explain to me how you 1.Downloaded(to pc or to phone)
2. How you installed

I can not get it to work. I got Full to install and off that website but Opera did the same thing it always does, asks for permission after every change. I tried to download off my phone and could not access that page. With IE I can not log into the forum, with Opera I can not download the file. Arrgggg.

Side note hope people have seen my post about the start menu edits.

thanks everyone who is contributing to this its a huge huge help. Thinlyveiled can't wait to see what you got.

I installed IBM JVM version 5.7 it installed fine and I installed the gmaill app using that it worked great at first but then wouldn't open again. So I removed gmail and JVM version 5.7, installed J9 full version but when I did that it wouldn't install the gmail app at all kept on timing out.

Posted by: jhruth

Forces are at work to provide the perfect solution... that's all I can say for now...

There is a different writeup on getting gmail to work that is working for me that has nothing to do with this one. I now have gmail set up to check every 15 mins and dl my messages, automatically.

Yes it's called POP. You can just setup a new account in Pocket Outlook to download messages from GMail every 15 mins.

That's definitely a workaround, but I think the reason why most people (including myself) want the Gmail app to work is to have the conversation threading and other Gmail features... as opposed to just getting the emails to the phone.

Not only that, but your sent messages won't be archived in Gmail if you use POP3.

Hey, I guess I should have specified that I also am at the Gmail Java working where it vibrates and the bad text. I am really confused about that one though. I have 2 Gmail Java's installed now one is a 1.0 version I believe. The one that is default is still the bad one that ask's for permission everytime. I need to explore to use the other one. Havent tried switching java again yet though.

This thread has the working solution.

I am having this problem where the IBM J9 Java quits seconds after lauching. I have reinstalled it multiple times and it keeps happening. Any ideas?

Remove all files from the \My Documents\temp and \My Documents\recordStores folders. You will lose all of your Java programs, but you will be able to reinstall them afterwards.

thinlyveiled - YOU ARE THE MAN! That worked. Thanks a bunch!
