Why is the Cingular 680 more expensive than the unlocked 680?

Why is the Cingular 680 more expensive than the unlocked 680 offered from the Palm website? It costs more only by about $50, but what makes it worth the extra $50? Is there special software for Cingular?

no, it is just a choice that cingular made.

infact, i think you get more for your 399 if you but from palm.

that's because cingular is an assface network. it's the same phone ( same software etc ) and you get to chose the color, and provider with the unlocked one. and now palm offers both a trade in program and a free music pack with your purchase. AND no activation/ upgrade fee that cingular will charge you because they choose to be the crappiest network in the US.

It's just freedom to price products at whatever price businesses wanna price them. Also you could probably get it quicker from cingular. Just walk into the store, pay da cash, you got it. The Palm store just doesn't exist yet.

if you were to but from palm.com, they throw in free mobile music pack that includes a 1 gig card and 2-1 headphones and something to do with the yahoo music store.

You also get free shipping when ever they start shipping, which at this time no one know when that will be.

ppl who ordered last week from cingular started getting them. it has been hit or miss on which cingular store would have them in stock. it seems that big cities got them, but not all the stores in those cities.

the phone have started showing up at palm stores and ppl have been able to purchase them. One person said he got the music pack too included.

Whats even funnier is that Cingular sells the locked units to their dealers at $399

As for a 1 gig card, those are like 10 dollars on ebay now days so not enough there to persuade me to buy unlocked since I can get upgrade price via cingular premier.

I ordered mine from Palm on November 24th, and got the shipment notification email days ago. I called to check the status yesterday since it's supposed to be overnight shipping and I was told that UPS "hasn't picked it up yet". This was the worst customer service EVER btw. They actually make Cingular look good. I placed the order online and the order number screen quickly flashed into an "order error" screen for absolutely no reason. Luckily he canceled one. Point being: It took me 6 days to get my Macbook CD2 from the assembly line in China when I ordered it on the release date...what the hell is wrong with Palm!!???? Between dealing with constant 650 crashes, and this example of their poor customer service/webpage I'm not so sure this was a good idea. Also didn't realize I'd be stuck paying sales tax.....since they have some sort of a sales BOOTH at Logan Airport!!!????

I ordered a Graphite 680 unbranded from the online palm store on the 28th. I should have it by tomorrow according to the email from Palm I got today.

BTW: The Palm website states in several spots, "orders on the 680 may take 1-2 additional weeks to ship". SO yes your getting free over night shipping, but its not able to be shipped until about a week after purchase.

Customer service had a bit of problem finding my stuff.. I actually hung up, and called back.. The second rep asked the right questions and found it..

All in and all no complaints from the Palm store from me.

Ordered mine on the 22nd at 830am. As it stands, I am still w/o my 680 Crimson, but it is shipped. I am expecting it on Monday 12/3.. According to Palm's site now, all are in stock and shipping normally except the graphite one.

Ouch, haters of the notorious orange. There might be some minor differences in programming if you order from cingular compared to palm. if you order from cingular At least you know your device will be network specific, and configured for GSM. Im funny about unlocked phones. What gsmps said is true, they sell to dealers @ 394.00
the price im gonna have to pay. (no upg).

I ordered mine (Crimson) on 11/30/06 on the Treo Store Palm website.. and it came it today! I did get a noticed that the graphites were taking a little longer.. 1-2 weeks? But all the other were available. Now i just gotta get everything from my 600 to this 680.

i wouldnt just sync the 680 after the 600. look at treocentral 680 forum. there is sticky that suggest how to do this.

btw, the graphites are now being shipped too.
