Getting Started With 8525

I've looked around here a bit, but I can't seem to find a thread dedicated to things you can (or shsould) do to set your phone up.

Now, I am new altogether to the PPC world, so maybe what i am slow to do, everyone else just does second nature.

I haven't yet run the CD that came with it, so i can do that for sure. But i wanted to wait and see what some of the experts here thought would be the best way to get set up, and not necessarily the way cing would tell you to do it. Since they may have you run programs you don't need/want.

So, if there was a good thread in here, or elsewhere on how to get started setting up your phone so it will run the best way possible, i'd really appreciate it.

Thanks for the help

Here it is, I'm pasting it in case anyone else is interested. Didn't get to read through it yet, I was busy finding some other good threads to look into as well by reviewing your past posts.

Wow, at first glance that is a lot to take in, and hard to pick which ones to go with since there are so many there.

I wonder what 3-5 programs would you start with (must have), and is there any that are on already that could be removed? I ask this b/c i have no sd card and i would think i will run out of space without one, no?

Also, i was curious about any system setting edits i should make the unit perform its best.

Maybe a dumb question, but for managing contacts and all, you're just using outlook? I personally would like to load 100's of dr.'s info for my job, but somehow not have them integrated in with my main contacts. is there some way to manage that?

What primary functions do you want to use your 8525 for? Based on that, I can recommend some apps ...

Internet (mapping and searching will be key as i will be on the road a lot for work (sales)), Email (i have 3 email accounts I'd like to setup and manage). Then texting i guess....

Not sure what else i'll use, this is kind of a new thing for me....

I want to use the device to help a lot with the job, which is also new. Currently I just keep an index card with the Dr's bus card and hand written names and related info. So i will want to make notes (verbal maybe?) in regard to an account. also use contacts to schedule appts.

Does that help? Sorry i'm so unsure

MOST IMPORTANT - Get a screen protector and an external stylus

THEN
a. For Internet - try PIEPlus (an extension to PIE) or Opera ... really good browser solutions
b. For Mapping (Maps you mean) - try Google mobile maps (dont rem any other mapping solutions right now)
c. Maybe get a Today plugin like SPB Diary (or Pocket Breeze) to show your appointments, tasks etc on the today screen ...
d. Maybe get a weather plugin (SPB Weather or PocketWeather) to check the weather on the go ..
e. Email - You can either pop your emails or set up DirectPush to get them pushed to your 8525 (try 4smartphone.net or mail2web if you dont have access to an exchange server). You can also try email clients like Flexmail to improve your user experience
f. Notes/Tasks etc - You can use the default apps (pretty decent in my opinion). Otherwise Phatnotes or something similar
g. Business cards - You can get a scanner software that can scan those cards (dont rem where I saw this software) and load them up on your device .. that way totally integrated
h. Info - You can get a relation DB to store all your custom info and manage it (dont rem a good app for that right now again)

Cant help you with texting .. but having a keyboard should definitely help ..

Hope this helps .. Let us know if you have any further questions

i did get a screen protector, but what is external stylus? i need a good case too!

Those are some good tips, but i will probably just type the info in, that would be easiest down the road. so you would not just use outlook or whatever came with the phone for address book etc and email?

External Stylus meaning just a different stylus than the stock stylus .. the stock stylus has a tendency to come loose after some use.

For most parts, I personally use most of the apps that came with the phone for emails, contacts etc .. some of the apps that I listed above work on top of these default apps to really improve your productivity .. say for e.g. by showing everything on the today screen ..

And you are right .. figure stuff out as you go along ..

ah, that makes some sense. I saw a screenshot of someones phone screen and it looked really cool. Mine is dull for now, and so yeah maybe the weather or a few extras will spruce it up a bit. There is a slight learning curve with this thing, but i didn't just want to start changing settings and adding junk i won't use and then slow the phone down in the process.

Thanks very much joker for your help, i really do appreciate it!

Before you add weather make sure you have an unlimited data plan, it will chew through a good chunk of data.

For you names you should wander over to www.pocketinformant.com and check out pocket informant. You should be able to set up catagories for doctors and be able to swtich the view via filters to see work vs personal numbers. Plus it is an awesome calendar and to do list.. I really like it. Fusion is another similar type program. Put it on your PPC and give the free trial a spin.

As for must haves the first stuff I put on my PPC are

Phonealarm (google for the web site) for profile switching and multiple alerts
Pocket Informant
SBSH for Pocket Weather, Pocket Breeze, and iLauncher
Fitaly as a onscreen keyboard replacement
iGuidance for GPS/Maps/Routing from contacts
Total Commander for files management and registry hacks
SPB Finance for my bank accounts
Egress for RSS new feeds...

Just some stuff I have registered and like to use... Your mileage will vary...
