Blackjack Extended Battery

Not sure if anyone saw this yet but I didn't see a thread:

http://www.phonecycle.com/batteries...=808&brandid=13

Will Ship on Dec 4th, 2006. Requires Extended Battery Door (not inlcuded).

Posted by: enki42

So 1800mAh vs 1200mAh or 50% more.

Just got the 3125 on Saterday but thinking if I should use the 30 day policy to trade it in for the Blackjack (mostly just for the better keyboard for input. Can't really tell how long the battery lasts between the two since most reviews seem to have the Blackjack being used much more and hense not lasting as long.

i wonder how much bigger it is

Umm... I wonder how much bigger in size this battery is to require an extended door.. I love how small and slim the Blackjack is now, I would love to have better battery life but dont want to have a buldgy phone... Are there any pics around the net of this or similar devices?

Posted by: SangLad

I think the battery charger case (the one that can store extra normal battery) is supposed to be compatible with the extended battery). If you pop in a normal battery in the charger case, you can see that there is a space left. So, I think the thickness of the extended battery will be the normal battery thickness plus this empty space (I know this is pure speculation and not very scientific).

I think it might be a little bit more than the camera level (which will not bother me that much).

Posted by: DrBaker

If it extends out even with the camera, I think they will sell a ton of these things.

Posted by: spartanrob

I just called and they won't be in until the 12th, yet another delay.

I just called too and was going to say the same thing.

Honestly I doubt they'll ship then. I think we're getting strung along prob until next year.

Posted by: spartanrob

I was told I could order it and it would ship as soon as they arrived, but, they charge your CC immediately, not when it ships. I think i'll call again on the 12th.

They can do that but they must ship within 30 days of charging you or give you the option of a refund. Federal mail order laws. If anyone opts for this, I would never let it get beyond 60 days in any case.

Posted by: digitalgrafx78

I hope someone will post a pic once they get it. Would like to see the size of this thing.

Good to know, thanks.

Is this a real Samsung OEM battery though? I find it kind of odd that Cingular doesn't sell this and some other store is.

Posted by: juiceppc

The site says OEM but I'm curious if the battery cover will be the same material. Someone at wirelessgalaxy mentioned something about it being "burgundy" in color... Wha! But then mentioned "probably not". I don't care as long as it works.

I've often found that after-market batteries perform as well as, if not better than original OEM batteries.

Are you freakin' kidding me? Dang. well at least it's only a 1 day delay so maybe their getting closer and closer... I can be patient. No one currently has one of these though right? Or are we getting shafted by wirelessgalaxy.com?

Posted by: fresnostatevb13

I didn't see this mentioned in this thread, but I saw it on another. Samsung is offering the extended battery and cover directly from their site for order. Here is the link:

http://www.samsung.com/Products/Mob...age=Accessories

Also, they are offering a plastic holster as well.

Posted by: spartanrob

It's listed as "out of stock"

Posted by: cebailey

Maybe this is just me being anal, but I would totally buy an extended battery for this phone if it made it lay flat on the table instead of at an angle because of the camera.

Even if the whole thing was as thick as the camera 'bulge,' it would still be plenty thin for me. And I'd like to use the 3G instead of the EDGE-only hack, so I'd appreciate the added battery life.

Does anyone have this battery yet? If so, can you take a picture of the phone with the battery on it?

Posted by: freeheel

Wireless Galaxy called me last thursday from their Texas number to tell me that the product was delayed until Dec 13. I don't mind, but I find it weird that they called...

Posted by: beaups

weird? Sounds like good customer service.

Posted by: SangLad

I probably will never buy anything from wireless galaxy after this. Their customer service is horrible. I read that there is one person that they called to say it was delayed, but judging by many people in this thread who have not gotten any calls back, I think the customer service sucks in general.

I will wait for the entended battery to ship tomorrow, but somehow, I highly doubt that they will ship it tomorrow. Most likely, another delay...

Posted by: spartanrob

I've talked to them 3 times, each time they told me about the delay. They were very friendly and I didn't wait on hold too long. They never asked me for my information so I wasn't expecting a call back. If they have them in tomorrow, i'll buy one. Can't really judge their customer service until you experience it first hand.

Posted by: SangLad

Well, I guess, I should clarify my previous post a bit. I ordered mine on Thanks Giving day and since then I have not heard back from them (They have all my contact information). I have called them probably 8 times in total and only been able to get in touch with them about 3 times (all calls were during business hours). Each time, I call, they would give me a date, but each time those dates were past, they would give me another date.

Now, I am not an unreason person. I don't mind that the item is delayed, but what I do mind is that if there is a delay (whether at the seller's end or at the supplier's end), the seller should contact the customer and let them know about the delay rather than customer calling them. In an age of internet/e-mail/mobile phones, how hard is it to set up an automatic e-mail alert to let the customer know that their items has been delayed?

Plus, they have already charged me for an item. I know there was a previous posting saying that they can do this as long as they ship it within 30 days of charging me ( and I am not bother by the fact that they charged me).

So, yes, in my first hand experience with this particular seller, I did not have a good buying experience. That's all I was trying to say in my previous post. Others may have had a good experience with this seller. Just my 2 cents.

Posted by: spartanrob

Well put, thanks for the details.

HAHA. Dude you beat me to it every time.

I talked to someone and they said this is the largest battery order they've ever had. He did tell me the 16th though...

He also said(he seemed knowledgable) that the Samsung rep was in there and said that was a "firm date". Whatever but he also said the slowdown might be in making the battery door. He also said that Samsung was initially not going to make this battery until they got so many requests from people from wireless galaxy. He said at least 500+ preorders.

Hmmm, the 16th is saturday. 500 preorders, i hope they ordered enough

Posted by: SangLad

So, for the 9th time, I have gotten off the phone with wireless galaxy. Supposedly, my extended battery and extended battery cover will be shipped tomorrow and they will be sending me a tracking number for them tomorrow evening. Theoretically, I should get them by money morning.

But, somehow, I get a feeling that this might not happen...

So fas I believe Samsung is the only one to make the door. Not sure about the battery but I'm pretty sure no one has made the door yet and that is where the delay is...

Posted by: spartanrob

I just called wireless galaxy and they said the batteries are coming in today and if you order by 2:00PM CST they will ship today. I bit the bullet and ordered.

Posted by: lrodrig

I found a picture of what claims to be an extended battery with cover. Looks kind of strange but I guess it would work. Seems like it's supposed to go all the way up and around the sides of the camera hump maybe?

Good find. Thanks for the link.

It does extend up and around the camera hump. I have heard from others that wanted to see that exact design as they wanted their blackjack to have one consistent depth. I think that battery door might end up looking really good once installed.

If Samsung (or whomever designed it) was thinking outside of the box, they would have made some storage areas in the extra space between the thick battery and the camera hump. That would be a perfect storage spot to mount an extra SIM card and an extra MicroSD card. When the Spectec MicroSD Wifi card is released, I'll be ordering one. It would be really cool to have the extended battery with the wifi and have a place to store the card when it's not in use.

Hey, when one of you guys actually receives the new battery/door, could you post a pic of what the whole thing looks like installed on the BJ?

Thanks

Posted by: maevro

At least Samsung is selling it and it is branded Samsung, otherwise I think it would look pretty ghettoish. I too would love to see it on an actual phone and how flush it is with the camera.

Dude dude dude... This is getting funny. I knew you'd update this post. I've been calling there all morning, they must have just opened.

the cust service number has been busy for a while, i finally got through and just hit 0 for the operator.

We definitely need some pretty good tests done to determine how much of an improvement the bigger battery is.

Posted by: juiceppc

Is your tracking number working on USPS.com? Mine isn't bringing anything back...

Posted by: taveanator

I'm hoping since it's a Samsung branded cover that it will be the same slightly tacky texture as the original battery door cover?

Here's the pic.

It's posted in the SP forum.

Posted by: redbluff

I got mine today. Does not look bad. The cover does not have the same feel as the normal cover but overall the unit still looks good with the new cover. Now to test and see how much more time we get out of the extended battery.

Posted by: znutar

got mine today also (ebay seller, Unlimited Cellular) total price was $40.98 shipped. Charging right now and I must say the cover is MUCH easier to take on and off than the original. Also, the folks that sold me the battery had it to me super fast (4 days from purchase):

Posted by: jerryk

Just curious, but how much are people thinking about a larger battery using their phones?

I use mine about an hour a day for voice and about 10 mb/day of data. Thus far the battery indicator has not been below full by the end of the day. I am in a 3G area, but I do see the phone switch to EDGE quite often.

jerry

Posted by: znutar

you must have a magic phone. If I moved 10 mb/day, at that rate my battery would be gone in about 4-5 hours. In a typical 3G surf session, I'll see the battery drop by a third in about 40 minutes under heavy 3G use. Hence the need for the extended battery. Even with light use, I'm lucky to get 1.5 days. I don't think I've used 10 mb/week yet. If so, I would be swapping my battery twice a day.

I got mine today too. I like it, despite the lack of the rubberized surface like the original. However, 1 grip that I have is that it doesn't seem to fit into Samsung-branded plastic holster. That's a major bummer.

How does the new battery cover click into place being that it seems to be longer than the orignal?

Based on the pictures, I think it looks pretty good.

Is there enough room under the new battery cover to store a MicroSD (to regular SD) adapter ?

Thats what I was just thinking. It looks like the new battery door comes all the way up to the top of the phone by the camera lens and not 1/2 way up like the OEM door.

Also, the battery looks a considerable amount larger, I would like to hear comments on performance on life span.

Thanks for the nice pictures.

Posted by: beaups

IIRC the battery is 1800mah vs. the stock 1200mah. so it should last 50% longer....

Posted by: eboychik

Ordered mine from Samsung yesterday, after zero communication from the people at Wireless Galaxy ("Where Customer Service Is Merely A Slogan") about my order status. Received it first thing this morning from Samsung. It does fit in the external battery charger, and I found the replacement door to be rubberized, like the original (though it's plastic, not metal).

Even after charging it in the phone until it was supposedly 100% charged, I put it in the external charger, where it simmered for a few more hours before changing from red to green. I always prefer to really fully charge and discharge a new battery the first few cycles. With a little seasoning, I think this one should last significantly longer.

I think my battery meter is not a straight linear scale - it seems to go down to 3/4 in about an hour, but take a good while longer after that to get down to to 1/2.

Yes, the extended battery is thicker, but it also has a nice solid feel in my hand now that the original didn't have. It's a little flimsy without. Same tyhing as when I got the extended battery and door for my Blackberry 8700c - my typing actually got better (fewer mistakes) since the balance was better. And it's true - the door goes on and off much more easily than the origianl (also like the Blackberry door: the basic one takes an octopus to remove, while you could open the door and change the extended battery with one hand with no problem).

I guess if I was going to a party for a few hours I'd use the regular battery, especially since I get a kick out of showing off this phone, and how slender it is. But for every day use, I think I'll stick with the extended.

Mine isn't either, i hate USPS tracking numbers, they are useless.

Posted by: juiceppc

I got mine. it's kind of rubberized but not as much as the original. Which IMHO does make it slightly a tad more slippery. Otherwise I know it sounds stupid but I almost prefer it being a little thicker overall. It feels more solid when typing and holding. And is still quite small. Still nowhere near the thickness of a Treo.

Hey! this time you beat me to it. When did you order yours? Hopefully mine will be there when I get home from work.

I ordered mine on black Friday when they had a sale. Got a good deal.

I paid extra for overnight delivery (14 bucks, I think - not so bad).

Here's how it's doing after a second full overnight charge (6 hours):

Woke up - checked email and made four phone calls, totalling 45 minutes. Did some downloading of an app, and a Sprite backup. Worked in the organizer. Pretty much used the phone ever since awakening. The extended battery just went down to two bars after 5 hours (though the Resco battery monitor says it's still at 100% - go figure).

This is a definite improvement over the regular battery. I'm getting used to the size and heft, although I didn't have the phone for a long time before getting it - just a few weeks.

Posted by: robert1_1

Just got mine yesterday. I too prefer the extra thickness and straight back now. Though guess what. That cool Samsung plastic clip I just got a few days ago no longer fits with the extended back. That sucks. Back to the batman clip. Though I put on the plastic protector on the screen since I started using the platic clipi so may just start carrying it naked in my pocket. It's still small enough.

Posted by: spartanrob

That stinks. there goes $15 down the tube.

Seems like there are a number of us (ok, two, right now) that have this dilemma. What gives, Samsung?

Posted by: spartanrob

No delivery for me today

Posted by: maevro

I ordered the extended battery and cover today, so I wont get it for a while.

I look at it this way....I can use the OEM cover and battery normally, but if I am going somewhere that I wont be able to charge the phone and dont want to carry another battery, I will use this.

or maybe I will enjoy it being thicker as some of you already do and just use it all the time.

Posted by: juiceppc

WTF? This morning my batt said about 25% left then I just checked it now it shows close to 50%... We need a ROM update. I think the battery monitor is screwed up on this phone. Either way I'm definitely getting better battery life with the new battery... I think?

thats crazy man, maybe you just have a bad battery. i am on my phone every 15 mintues doing something.... for example this first few days ive had the phone, ive been showing it to people contstatly, browsing web, music, xm, along with my usually 2+hours a day of phone calls. my battery hasnt ran out on my yet, although i do get alerts on the way home from work. it lasts about 15 hours for me, i change it if i plan on going out for the night.

i guess it just depends on your usage.. the battery is fine for me, others maybe not. also, maybe it could be an issue with the phone switching networks more than others in different areas? my phone stays on 3G almost the entire day while im in my office and at home.

Posted by: znutar

Well, based upon your usage patterns and my experiences, then both batteries I have must be "bad" because both have the same drainage patterns. Also, I do not tend to switch from EDGE to 3G that often so that's not the issue. I do notice with the extended battery I just got that I can go about 2.5 days compared to about 1.5 days, so that's a definite improvement.

Posted by: iJITSU

It's strange. The device seems to have a better "feel" to it with the extended battery cover. Don't know if that it feels more solid, the edges are more rounded, or what. I would still prefer to have the increased battery life without the extra thickness/weight, but the extended battery/door is not bad for what you get back.

Posted by: maevro

You know whats crazy? I ordered the extended battery yesterday and today I used the **** out of my phone and the battery hardly went down at all and it has been doing strange things like that for the past week or so now. I really feel like the longer I have the phone, the longer the battery lasts.

Wow. That really bad. Just to check my findings I ran 15 1 MB speedtests from several different sites. This was 5 PM after using the phone off and on all day. The battery meter is still showing full. FWIW I do put the phone on the charger each night when I get home and leave it there until I head out the door in the morning.

Same here. Also, I suspect the charging is better in the phone and continues for quite a while after the phone shows charged. Or perhaps charging the battery in the phone provides the phone with better information on the state of the battery. Either way, my battery last longer when charged in the phone instead of the external charger case.

Posted by: DrBaker

Does anyone with the extended battery cover know if there is enough room under it to store the MicroSD adapter?

Posted by: znutar

The way it is designed, you would have to modify it to fit a card in. The easiest way would be to use a soldering iron to melt the cross-hatched section where you could make space. However, I would be nervous it would fall out because the top part of the cover does not close, just lies flush with the section just below the camera hump

Posted by: jomo25

Extended battery and cover is now avail at some Cingular stores for $50. You can pick it up, without shipping, decide if you like it for 30 days, then return it if you don't. I like the options it provides. I'll probly have the extended battery on most of time, but if I'm going out and want something more pocketable, switch to the normal smaller battery for a slimmer phone...

Not sure if it would fallout due to the hump blocking the top. And if you didn't file down all the cross hatching, just enough to fit the card, then it should stay in anyways. Personally, i like the idea, but don't think i will need to bother with that. But I think it could be done without worrying.

Ok so first real full day of the Extended Battery and I was able to run it down.

Disconnected phone from charger at 7:30am. Did 2 hours of tethered internet connected to laptop. Received about 10 phone calls all lasting about 7 or 8 minutes each. did about 30 txt messages back and forth. Then connected once again tethered to the internet for another 3 hours, downloading files and searching web pages. Finally died on me about 8:30pm.

I put this phone through the trenches, and think this is pretty good life for an average user. I moved into a new house with no internet just yet so I use the tethered alot, on an average day I bet this phone would last me at very least a day and a half.

Oh and one other note, drops real fast to 2 bars on power but stays on those 2 bars forever.

Posted by: jomo25

Quote:

This is exaclty what I am finding with all my batteries (2 standard + 1 extended). The phone drops to 2 bars relatively quickly. but those last 2 bars stay on a looooong time. Granted it isn't the most comfortable feeling seeing only 1 or 2 bars on your phone in the middle of the afternoon, but I've yet to lose complete power yet. Those bars will last me til midnight when the phone goes back on the charger.

Lately, as I mentioned above, I've been trying to drain/charge them all the way just for safe measure and I've really noticed this non-linear "bar-drop" behavior. Last night, on the extended battery, with 2 bars left (actually around 40% charge remaining) around 9PM, I was trying to kill the battery off before I went to sleep so I can charge it all night. First, I was playing with my BT GPS unit, then I started watching NBA League Pass Broadband on my PC via my BT tethered BJ. Watched the whole first half of a game, before I finally gave up. Still had about 25% batt left. So, I disconnected and didn't charge the phone overnight. It's still at 20% this morning. I'm betting that will get me thru the day.

So, it might be that some people are seeing the 2 bars drop quickly, extrapolating the expected use and concluding that the battery totally sucks. I'm beginning to think maybe it's the phone's "juice meter" that sucks, and the batteries are "adequate".

Posted by: maevro

I got my extended battery in the mail today. I have to say, I love the feel of the phone much better now. It fits in my hand much better and has some more weight to it. Tomorrow ill see how much better the actual battery life is.

The extended battery with cover comes out to where the camera lens is, so it is not messing with the size at all.

As for the BJ vs. 8525, they are two totally different phones. I had the 8125 and
loved it, but I hated the size of it. You really need to go play with both phones and see which one you enjoy more. One is a touchscreen and one isn't. One has WiFi and one doesn't.

I love the BJ because I can slip it into my pocket and it doesnt look like I have a lunchbox in my pants like the 8125 / 8525 does.

loved it, but I hated the size of it. You really need to go play with both phones and see which one you enjoy more. One is a touchscreen and one isn't. One has WiFi and one doesn't.

I love the BJ because I can slip it into my pocket and it doesnt look like I have a lunchbox in my pants like the 8125 / 8525 does.

Keep us updated about the battery. if it is good and worth it i might order my blackjack soon. Thanks for your help.

So far the extended battery has been great. I used the phone a lot today (phone calls, text messages, email and internet) and the battery is still going strong, where the regular battery would be close to empty. Definitely a good investment if you use this phone a lot, imo.

Picked up mine today at a cingular store... $49.99. Will report back after I've had time to use it.

One store I went to didn't even know it existed. The guy told me the extended battery was the 2nd battery included when I bought the phone. He insisted it was until I pulled up the battery on Samsungs website right there on my Blackjack. It's amazing at how dumb these people are. You have to know your product if you want to sell it.

What's the thickness of the phone with the extended battery and cover?

It basically comes out to where the camera lens bump is. I posted pics on the previous page. I really like the phone with the battery and new cover, especially the way it feels in my hands.

Really not that much thicker. Feels more robust. I like it and not as worried if my battery will die soon. Got it at Cingular store for $50.

Wow, Last night for New Years - I really got to see the extended battery in action. The last time I had charged the phone was about 1pm on Sunday. I used the phone a lot yesterday (phone calls, text messages, emails and a lot of internet data) and forgot to charge it last night. I had a little less then 1/2 battery left where with the OEM battery, it would be dead.

My fitted leather case that I got from Samsung.com works fine with extended battery.

I'm not sure if I'm right about this tip that seems to have dramatically improved battery life for me with my BJ, so please correct me if I am wrong. In my experience, since I became religious about using the Task Manager to kill off processes (hold the Home button until it comes up, then Stop everything you don't want running) I have seen dramatically improved battery life. In my experience IE likes to stay running after use and it KILLS the battery when running, even when you aren't using it. In my experience since I started killing IE and basically all processes whenever I won't be using the phone for a while it has lasted much, much longer. I would love to know how to get ActiveSync to quit autolaunching itself (it seems to always be running), as I suspect if I could keep that process dead all the time the battery would last even longer. Of note in my experience is that I keep the phone and bluetooth enabled at all times, as I use it for tethering to my laptop quite often.

I got the large version of this case at CompUSA for $14.99

Fits the blackjack and extended battery great.

This is exactly why i asked if the Blackjack used megahertz scaling but no one could seem to give me an answer. ive been very religious about closing out a program after use as well, and ive never had a complaint about the regular battery life. The phone also seems to operate a slowly with many programs open.
