Opera Mini 3 is out...problems with Blackjack Persist

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I installed Operamini 3 on my Blackjack hoping it would get rid of the problems with it asking for permission all the time, but it still seems to be doing the same thing. Anybody know if there is a fix for this yet? I love OperaMini waaaaay better than PIE, it's just annoying having to give it permission all the time.

I would like to know as well. PIE is sub standard compared to opera.

Maybe its because I'm new to Operamini but everything looks worse on the Opera browser.

I downloaded it directly to my phone but, and I'm sure I goofed somewhere, its a pain-in-the-___ to start.

I would appreciate any tips/suggestions to help me understand what you mean in promoting Opera.

Many thanks and best regards, Phonuzer

PIE doesn't seem to handle the landscape orientation of the new WM5 smartphones that have been released. (moto q/dash/blackjack)

Opera Mini works better for me for two reason: 1. I have to do a lot less scrolling through blank space on Opera Mini, it does a good job of making sure all the content on the page is presented back to back. When I go to sites like Engadget on PIE, I have to scroll down forever to see the content. 2. Everything loads in one shot on Opera Mini. On PIE, it will start loading the page, and then take forever to finish loading, even though I'm on a 3G connection.

Buy (or try) the Opera Browser for WM5. Much better than the Mini Browser, Much Much Better than Explorer, and no Java Security Issues

You might not want to bother. Just downloaded the CAB file and installed it (Uses over 6M of memory!). Can't get it to run. Guess I'll play with it a while.

That's not for Smartphones. That's for PPC.

This is a universal Java midlet problem, not an Opera Mini problem. All Java apps I have installed (EQO, Google Maps, etc.) ALL do the same thing. Sorry.

wait so which one should we get opera mini or opera mobile?

mini .

The Java permission issue is a small price to pay for the superior speed. Using Edge I find pages load 2-3 times faster then when using PIE. Also the back key takes you through you recent page views instantly, unlike PIE which has to reload each page.
I do think that text is easier to read on PIE, however.
PS - I am using a T-Mobile SDA.

Posted by: phonuzer

Now I get a better picture, thanks.

I generally connect via WiFi so time isn’t my biggest problem and I find that, however I set up my SDA with caching enhancement(s) and other “c-r-a-p”, that pages load pretty fast in PIE.
Given this and my failing eyesight I appreciate the view over any lag in PIE.

Anybody out there ever “goof” with this http://jp.opera.com/products/mobile/products/wm-zero3/?

JUST RAN ACROSS THIS SITE http://wapreview.com/blog/ - INTERESTING.

Try that and post your feedback in that thread...curious to know if it works for you.

That's because you apparently have not run into this issue on your SDA. It's really bothersome on a BlackJack, because web pages with graphics often require multiple HTTP connections (and hence multiple confirmations) to complete loading.

Everyone affected by this issue should complain vociferously to Samsung and Cingular.

Yea, I checked out that forum, but like a lot of people are mentioning below the initial post, the "Session" option isn't available on the Blackjack. That was one of the first things I checked out when I had the problems with Operamini. I hear what people are saying about this being a problem with the Midlet Manager, I was just hoping that somehow Mini 3 had some kind of miraculous workaround, but I guess it's stuck inside a "cage" of bad java settings. Anybody suspcious that Cingular may have crippled the java stuff on purpose?

OK, now i understand & that does suck. Obviously if you have to constantly give permission Opera Mini becomes usless.
Sorry,
Barry

On a related note, I installed Opera Mini 3 on my Dash, and it seems to work fine in Midlet Manager, except the left soft button won't work. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

Posted by: rEVOLVE

I can confirm the left button not working on my Dash since I put V3 this morning.

Posted by: jlczl

It's not just Opera Mini, I also have UGuide TV listings installed and it does the same thing as Opera Mini always asking for permission. Neither of the two programs do that on my Eten M600+, it is defeinitely an issue with the BJ and Cingular and not with the programs themselves.

Posted by: ventivent

The included JAVA manager is a big problem with the Blackjack. Fortunately, you can install a new JAVA environment. See this thread for details. Try installing the new environment, and then installing opera mini.

A couple of questions. Can I access secure sites like Fandango and buy movie tickets with Opera Mini and has Opera cleaned up the awful uninstall functionality?

I still have not heard a solid reason unless secure site functionality is much better for switching from PIE if the uninstall issues are still there. (Have not experienced thm personally, just anecdotally)

On the Dash, try using the Q key. Don't ask me why, but it works on mine.

Using the J9 Java Applet on the Blackjack I've discovered that the "A" key acts as the left soft key, which allowed me to change the font size.

I still haven't figured out what acts as the right soft key.

Has anyone figured out how to make Opera the default browser for when web links are clicked in other apps such as email messages?

Oddly, starting Opera a second time (or anytime thereafter) is unsuccessful on my Dash.

Joel

Posted by: rEVOLVE

Was doing the same for me.

I had to uninstall the Opera Mini 3 that installed on my Dash. There's a thread somewhere that has a direct link to the lo mem version that should work better.

I have this problem as well.

Here is the link to the low-memory version:

Hey guys.
I've been through explorer on by BlackJack and can't seem to find Operamini. Does anyone know how I can uninstall it? There are so many folders I may have just missed it.

Posted by: Gunner1

You delete Java Apps from the Java client. Launch Java and then highlight the application you want to delete, go to the actions menu and delete it.

Jeez, for a guy who sells phones, I feel like an idiot. I saw that earlier and completely erased it fom my brain. Thanks.

Open File Manager to search and destroy.
I, personally, hate Operamini; it was always a pain.
