What is tethering and how does it work?

I think it has to do with coneccting my laptop via my BJ...

If this is the case...Can I do this withoug an ISP or do I need an ISP to do this lie the old days...

I am in the market for a BJ and am wondering if this is a benefit that I might want to calculate as I weigh my decision...

tethering allows you to use your laptop to access the internet, via your blackjack's connection to cingular's mediamax or pda data plans.

though i recently returned mine, i had successfully connected to the internet on my laptop through my blackjack, via usb cable. first, you must set your blackjack to be used as a modem (find details elsewhere, i don't have one in front of me). then you must create a new dial-up network (DUN) profile on the laptop. set the profile to use the blackjack "modem" (which the computer will detect and install drivers for once you set the blackjack to 'modem' mode and plug in the usb cable), set the phone number to *99# and the login/pass are WAP@CINGULARGPRS.com and CINGULAR1.

that's all it took for me, and i was up and running on my laptop using my EDGE connection courtesy of my mediamax plan.

edit: though i have not verified whether i got hammered with data charges yet, i assume this is something cingular only wants you to do with a pda data plan, and NOT a mediamax plan. use at your own risk.
