8525 Disappearing Emails

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have been trying to get my 8525 working with my gmail account. I'm able to send emails fine and download to 8525. However when 8525 connects again the emails I already have downloaded disappear.

Does anyone have any idea's on what the problem might be?

I have been using the 8525 since the 16th, and have the same issue. I also had this problem on my HP Ipaq too, so I don't think it is device specific, but WM5 specific. I have looked around for a way to keep all Email when downloading new ones, but no luck yet, can anyone help us please?

I'm not sure I'm clear on the problem. When you say "disappear," from where do they disappear? If you grab your email into Pocket Outlook from the POP3 server, then delete them from your 8525 and empty the trash, on the next Send & Receive, they will be deleted from the POP3 server's inbox. This is the intended result. Or do you mean they disappear from the 8525's inbox? If you delete them from Gmail using its interface, I believe the same should happen in reverse (i.e., they will be deleted from the 8525 on the next S&R).

Ok so my brother is having the same problem with his blackjack. If someone has any ideas on how to fix it that would be great. What is happening is that an email comes in, after it is viewed it stays until it is closed. Then when he goes back to it later it is gone without him ever deleting it.

The issue is you receive emails from gmail to your inbox. You don't even have to read them, just let them stay in inbox. Now do S/R from 8525 and then they disappear. Now this is without deleting them from gmail. I have no idea where they go. But I have tried everything to get it to work without success.

If it's only happening with GMail, try changing your "Forwarding and POP" Settings #2 ("When messages are accessed with POP "). Log on to GMail from the Web, go to Settings, Forwarding and POP, and make sure this is set to "keep Gmail's copy in the inbox."

Thats what i would recommend... also, in your gmail inbox, click on "All mail" you'd be surprised whats in there.

I think the solution to the problem is to uncheck the box for only display messages from the last ... days

this way it displays messages past the las ... days

I have done everything recommended here with no change. I'm beginning to think it's a gmail problem.

I have the same problem with my SBC Yahoo email also..

I had this same problem, but I wasnt using Gmail. I tried to use express mail and then tried just adding a pop email account. Nothing I did would work and my Inbox emails would just keep disappearing everytime I did a new send/receive. A work around would be to immediately move incoming messages to another folder. Unless you can set a filter to do this automatically it wouldnt help. Sometimes I do not check my email before I do another send/receive. Ultimately my solution was to download a 3rd party email program, I chose FlexMail 2007. It works nicely and solved all my problems.

I have an comcast email account. So I set up the 8525 to use it. Everything works fine now. No more disappearing emails. At least not yet.

Something must be wrong with gmail in this area. Just not sure what.

Gmail classically has issues with POP access and downloading mail to mobile devices. When I say that, I mean that some of the normal options for POP3 aren't enabled, or behave differently, with Gmail. For instance, the classic "Leave a copy of messages on server" doesn't work at all. Never fear, there are a few workarounds.

I use my Dell Axim tethered to my cell phone to check my mail on the go and here's how I've got the mail application set up.

Login to Gmail. Go to Settings, Forwarding and Pop, and check the "Keep Messages in Inbox" feature.

Now, on your device, go into your Gmail account information and modify your username to the following:

recent:yourusername@gmail.com

Gmail calls this "recent mode" which allows multiple machines to access, via POP, a single Gmail account. Be forewarned, the last 30 days of email from your Gmail account might download to your mobile device.

There is some minimal instructions on this over in the Gmail Help section, but it's minimal at best.

in outlook on ur 8525 go into the mailbox settings and one of the options is something like "only keep last 3 days of downloaded emails" uncheck it and you should be good.

alpha8045,

I tried what you said and so far it's working great. And it did download a boat load of emails. Took awhile to clean them off. Now to see if it kepts working.

Thanks

I am experiencing the same problem with Gmail, and my messages disappearing on a send/receive. What I did do was download the mobile gmail java midlet app. It works great and looks more like the gmail interface (you can collapse and expand message threads). I remapped the mail button on my 8525 to the Midlet app. When I press it, it opens and then I tap on the gmail app to open it. It's an extra step, but I find it works (and looks) better than using Mobile Outlook.

I have been using this on my CU500. Your right it does work well. But on the 8525 I wanted to be able to have it check and download emails. That way I could just read them when I had the chance. I guess I wanted to take advantage of what 8525 has to offer.

In my opinion, the biggest flaw (or strength) of Gmail is the lack of multiple machine access support via the POP3 protocol. While this is frustrating to users that access their Gmail accounts via Outlook on several machines, it reinforces the unique Gmail concept of access to all your email from any web-connected computer.

Personally, having used Outlook for so long, I'm accustomed to using it for sending/receiving email rather than an online client. While the Gmail web interface provides most of what the average email user needs to communicate effectively, there are still some things that it can't do -- request read receipts, flag messages as high priority, etc. I also find the rules/filters in Outlook easier to configure than Gmail's filter system.

The difficulty in getting POP3 access setup for Gmail on a mobile device would be greatly simplified if Gmail would implement IMAP4 or a normal POP3 protocol.

I wish everything the best in getting their Gmail account set up and working properly!

Alright, I did a little testing today and this is what I've found out.

If you are going to use the "recent mode" for Gmail on your mobile device, be aware that if you delete a message from your mobile device's inbox, it may not get downloaded to your desktop machine.

I sent a variety of test messages from an alternate account to my Gmail account.

Mail downloaded first by my desktop showed up on my mobile device.

Mail downloaded first by my mobile device showed up on my desktop ONLY IF I didn't delete on my mobile device first.

So, if you're using a mobile device (8525, 8125, tethered PDA, etc) to check your Gmail using Outlook Mobile, be sure that you do not delete anything from your mobile inbox until after you've downloaded it to your desktop machine. While a true POP3 solution would allow this, it seems that Gmail's implementation of POP is a bit wonky.

I noticed this also.

When I first changex it to "recent mode" it downloaded a boat load of emails. I delete all of them off the mobile. Then notice they were gone from my desktop inbox. Thank heavens I was able to get most of them back, but still lost some. I really didn't want them to delete from desktop so went looking for something else.

So now I'm using activesync going thru mail2web and it is working very well. At least so far.

Deleting mail from the POP3 server when it's "really" deleted from the mobile device's inbox (i.e., deleted from the inbox and then emptied from the trash) is Windows Mobile 5's intended behavior. It's not just Gmail. I use Pocket Outlook (PO) to pull email from my home ISP's POP3 server (Charter), and it works the same way. E.g., I get an email in the POP3 server mailbox. If I Send & Rcv to pull the email into PO, the msg stays on the POP3 server. If I delete the email from PO and then Send&Rcv, the msg stays on the POP3 server. But if I empty the message from the trash in PO (i.e., "really" delete it) and then Send&Rcv, it's gone from the POP3 inbox.

So make sure you grab it onto your desktop, etc., before you "really" delete it for good from PO.

Right now I'm forwarding all my emails to "mail2web". But I leave a copy on my email providers server. So I can delete them off mobile and that deletes them off of "mail2web" server, but still know I have a copy if needed. It causes A little more work to go in and keep or delete emails, but worth it to me.

Same here. My main email is actually just a re-mailer (pobox.com). POBOX re-mails my email to four different mailboxes. That gives me one to POP with the 8525 and three backups.

That sounds good and keeps things safe.
