As one of the platform's big fans, I'm really sad to watch the Sidekick fall behind all the new players.
It's still the most elegant smartphone OS - but sheer elegance can't compete with bright crisp screens, more downloadable apps (tonight I downloaded Google Maps for Mobile and was just blown away).... and the sheer speed of 3G.
I really, really, wish there were a Sidekick Pro of some sort coming out, but I seriously doubt that will enter into the plans.

Um... the specs for the SK have ALWAYS been behind other top range phones. It's done well by offering an absurdly simple OS and programs that work out of the box (when they are finally released). The SK Pro would be the N/E series Nokias, UIQ Sonys, and HTC / IMATE Windows mobile products.
If Danger opened the OS to allow java and other programs to work they would loose the only advantaget that they have over the better and constantly evolving hardware.

There is enough brainpower behind Danger to do everything you mentioned. But they don't care... Why would they? The market for devices like you described is very competitive, whereas the market for mainstream, reliable messaging devices that don't make you look like a nerd is not. They don't make their money with nerds wanting Wifi and 3G, but with the young, technologicaly "virgin" crowd that want to message their friends, and their parents trying to keep the cost down.
Danger is doing everything they can to keep the dataplan as cheap as possible while making their messaging app as performant as it can be.
Yes there is other 20$ dataplan on T-Mo, but thats because T-Mo is only there as an example to help sell the phone to other company around the world (as T-Mo has interest in doing so, they invested in Danger), so don't give me the "but but but, 20$ for the Treo plan!"... They keep the price low artificially so that other providers thinks that its possible to do.
