To make this work, you must install a new Java MIDP2 environment. (Don't worry, you can uninstall it later if you wish without any harm.) For this task, we'll use IBM's Websphere Everyplace Micro Environment, AKA J9, version 6.1. You will then need to download the appropriate .JAD files and install them via the midlet manager. Step 1: Download the .CAB file from here onto your PC and copy it via ActiveSync to the My Documents folder on your BlackJack. Step 2: Download the Google Maps and GMail JAD files onto your PC and copy them via ActiveSync to the My Documents folder on your BlackJack. Step 3: Disconnect ActiveSync. Step 4: On your BlackJack, go to Start > Applications > File Explorer. Navigate to the My Documents folder if necessary. Click on the J9.cab file to install it. Step 5: Make sure you have a working network connection! (Test with IE.) Return to the My Documents folder via File Explorer. Then, click on the gmaps-Generic-Advanced_MIDP2_L1.jad to install it, and then, on the gm-Generic-Advanced_MIDP2.jad to install it. |

The JAD files are not part of the CAB file. I urge all readers to refer to the original post and follow it to the letter. No variation of these steps will work properly. |

If you installed the wrong google maps JAD then you must delete the midlet using the midlet manger. You should also delete the file from you "my documents" folder. Finally refer to the firts post for instuctions and follow them exactly (unless you have to use the link in one of the previous posts to download j9) At last... your soft keys should work and google maps should spring to life. For many cases, even a signature by Verisign or Thawte -- which is relatively cheap and needs no authorization from Cingular -- will suffice.)
However, in the same documentation, Cingular says that even unsigned Java midlets should be able to open standard HTTP and HTTPS sockets (which are the only operations that Google Maps/GMail/Opera Mini needs to perform) on a per-session basis (instead of just the oneshot option we're seeing on the Blackjack and other new phones). The behavior we're seeing is not consistent with Cingular's own published policy, and therefore I consider it a bug. I've notified Cingular on their developer boards, but I haven't yet received a response. |
