HOWTO: Google Maps/GMail Applications on Blackjack

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: thinlyveiled

I have finally managed to get Google Maps and GMail working 100% on my Blackjack, without constantly asking me whether the applications should be allowed permission to connect. Other Java midlets may work, but are not tested. (Unfortunately, Opera Mini does not work, but you can use Opera for Windows Mobile Smartphone instead.) This will serve as an interim fix until Samsung/Cingular releases an update to fix the problem with JBlend for good. (In the meantime, PLEASE keep those calls to Cingular and Samsung coming to keep the pressure on them!)

To make this work, you must install a new Java MIDP2 environment. (Don't worry, you can uninstall it later if you wish without any harm.) For this task, we'll use IBM's Websphere Everyplace Micro Environment, AKA J9, version 6.1. You will then need to download the appropriate .JAD files and install them via the midlet manager.

Step 1: Download the .CAB file from here onto your PC and copy it via ActiveSync to the My Documents folder on your BlackJack.

Step 2: Download the Google Maps and GMail JAD files onto your PC and copy them via ActiveSync to the My Documents folder on your BlackJack.

Step 3: Disconnect ActiveSync.

Step 4: On your BlackJack, go to Start > Applications > File Explorer. Navigate to the My Documents folder if necessary. Click on the J9.cab file to install it.

Step 5: Make sure you have a working network connection! (Test with IE.) Return to the My Documents folder via File Explorer. Then, click on the gmaps-Generic-Advanced_MIDP2_L1.jad to install it, and then, on the gm-Generic-Advanced_MIDP2.jad to install it.

You need to (1) ensure JavaScript is enabled in your browser and (2) wait a few seconds for the link to appear.

thinlyveiled,

You rock!!! One quick question before I try this...does this replace the file association such that all .jad files that would have once been handled by Jblend are now handled by the IBM Java app? If you uninstall the IBM version, is the assocation restored? Or is there some other easy way that this assocation can be undone should they ever free Jblend?

Just wondering what the uninstall path looks like before trying it.

Yes and yes. It's a clean install/uninstall. After you remove J9, the JBlend associations will be restored.

Now go study for those finals . . . .

Posted by: Gunner1

Can anyone report if using this version of Java also corrects issues with opera and other Java based applications?

If no answers I will be testing this later tonight.

Posted by: vwkismet

Thanks for the great work. I have followed the steps you provide and *almost* everything works. Install = fine. Permissions = fine. Maps = fine.

Gmail gives me the following error:

java.lang.RuntimeException: Unexpected server response: -1 null

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Michael

Does this occur before or after the midlet is installed? In any case, it's probably just the phone temporarily failing to connect. Try again.

Posted by: vwkismet

I've tried quite a few times - before and after other programs connect. It installed fine and I get the menus and all - it just won't load the inbox. When I hit refresh, the same error comes back.

Michael

Posted by: pstritt

Does this apply to the 8525 as well? Google maps locks up all the time on mine and is constantly asking if it is ok to access the internet.

Posted by: vwkismet

Sorry - ignore me. I just kept trying and it finally worked. Maybe it was a Google glitch. Who knows! Thanks for the good work.

Michael

Fantastic work... Quick question before I try this tho tonight when I get home. Will this work if it is installed or copied the files onto the micro sd card? I would like to avoid installing things onto the phone if nessessary. Thanks

You can copy the CAB and JAD files to your card, but they'll install onto the phone - no way to avoid it. Sorry.

That's not true, when installing the J9 app it lets you select whether it's installed on the phone or the storage card. Mine installed on the storage card and worked fine. Didn't see a way to select for the midlet but I supposed if you copied it to the storage card it might work.

Good to know. I didn't have access to a MicroSD card when I built the CAB file, and I assumed (wrongly, it appears) that one has to do something special when building it for the software to be relocatable to another part of the filesystem. I'm glad to hear that's not the case.

It's working great for me so far, though I'm having some issues with font size. When I tried GoogleMaps with the regular JVM, it worked and the text was a legible size. Now, the text is super small and even with great eyesight I have to really read closely. Same with Gmail app, and then unchecking the "small text" box makes it all too large.

Ah well, I'm happy just to have it, so I appreciate the efforts of all those who figured out how to make this work!

Posted by: mmeawad

Thank you so much. I'm going to install this tonight and let you know.

Posted by: fowen

Working great. Now I just need to figure out how to make the Smartphone version of Opera to work and I will be doing good.

Posted by: ace1259

Hey! Thanks for figuring this out!

I am able to get it to work but i have the tiny font problem, am I missing something?

Posted by: auwino

Is it just me or is anyone else not able to get the j9 download from that site? It keeps telling me that the computer could not establish a connection with the file server! Ah so close to having a working Gmail lol. Anyone have a mirror link or can tell me where else to get this .cab file? Thanks!

Hi,
When I get to the last step and click on gmaps-generic-advanced_MIDP2_L1.jad to install it the next screen showes Enter the URL of the MIDlet that you would like to install.

What URL would I enter here?

Thanks
Mike

That likely means that the JAR file was not successfully retrieved via the Internet. Try going back to File Explorer and clicking on the JAD file again.

Posted by: mnikoley

Got it. Thanks.

Posted by: mmeawad

thanks very much for putting this together this is awesome. a couple of quick ones for ya:

1. for gmail the fonts are really small can anything be done about that?
2. Is there a way to put a shortchut for gmail in my start menu? I'm sorry I'm new to windows mobile so I'm not too familiar with how everything works yet.

thanks,
Mina

Posted by: spartanrob

Works great, thanks. I am having the small font issue too

Posted by: Ghettopops

Oh boy I dont know what it is about this but my phone just doesnt like these darn fixes. I have installed and uninstalled(tried this method) 4 times now and still no luck. I wonder if it is the .net 2 I have installed or what but it wont work for me. I can get the J9 to installed but the gmail or gmaps just act like they are setting up, then they just close back to file explorer view of the files. arggg

I think I installed these properly, but I have a question about how to launch these apps:

So once these are installed you have to launch them by going into the "My Documents" folder and select the jads to bring up the MIDlet List??? Is there a way to shortcut to this?

Should these show up in the Java directory?

Thanks for the workaround!!

In the Start Menu, click the J9 icon. A menu will appear containing the midlets you installed.

Has anyone tested this version of Java with opera mini to see if it works without asking for the security confirmation on every transmission?

yes, i just installed opera mini using the IBM J9 environment. it works fine, except the softkeys aren't mapped properly, so i can't get to the menu to change the settings...the default font is really small.

Having trouble with download link. Could someone please email the j9.cab file to xxaarraa at gmail dotty com?? You are a hero threadstarter!!

Posted by: otis77

I downloaded the files to my desktop, ued the active sync to copy to my documents and disconnected the phone. Went to my documents on the blackjack and the files were not there. I used the search feature to see if they were there and it shows the j9.cab file is there but i cant open it up.

Any suggestions?

I downloaded the J9.cab and it is a zip file with a bunch of other files.

Can someone email me the J9 file to hlshure@yahoo.com

Thank you!

No, it's a .cab file with a bunch of files in it. That's irrelevant. The directions provided do work when properly followed.

I am having the same issue with the URL request. I have 3 bars and a good connection. I have gone back to my device explorer multiple times and clicked on the Gmaps midlet with no success.

Any advice?

Try surfing the web with Internet Explorer. If that doesn't work, then the midlet manager won't be able to retrieve the appropriate .JAR file off the Internet either. If you're still connected to your PC via the USB cable, that may cause your phone's Internet access to be interrupted, regardless of how much signal you have.

Thanks. I tried IE and I have no net access (not sure why). I am rebooting the phone and will try again.

Posted by: xxaarraa

Downloaded the cab, the link worked. Installed and smiling! thanks!

Posted by: jesterhs

Got it to work. Had to put the path for the midlet in the URL box and it installed. Loading google maps now and ... Works!!

Thank you so much!! This is great.

Can anyone tell me where I can find other java apps that will work on the blackjack?

I'm having a problem with this step. Both files are in My Docs and when
I go to install either of these files it asks for a MIDlet url and the line is blank. If i just het "OK" it says athat is not valid URL. Any thoughts?

Posted by: otis77

ok. i just switched out my blackjack for another due to an xm radio problem. I was also hoping that it would fix this problem as well.

I downloadd the .cab file and the google map file to my desktop. Used active sync explorer to transfer the files to my blackjack. They show up through the active sync explorer on my blackjack. I then disconnect the blackjack and navigate to where i saved the files on the phone. However, nothing shows up. No icon or anything. "no objects to display" is what it says.

Someone please tell me what i am doing wrong please

I also renamed the .cab file to j9.cab.zip and it shows up now, but i can't rename the extension once it is on my phone

Posted by: otis77

finally got the files to show up. however, now i can't figure out how to select continue on the EULA when installing google maps. I know this might sound like a noob question, but i tried every button on the damn phone and i can't get it to highlight accept or decline.

Any thoughts

Posted by: TheRemedy

I got the Gmail and Gmaps loaded now but when i launch it the soft keys do nothing. I see the selection go bright but nothing happens.

Any thoughts?

Posted by: thinlyveiled

If you are having trouble with the soft keys, be sure you are using the JAD files I linked to in my original post. Visiting Google's website to download the software instead will give you JAD files that will not work correctly with J9.

thanks! I assume I should uninstall the JAD files on my phone? Should I clear everything and start over? Do the JAD files come from the CAB? I did not see them the first time I did this.

Thanks again!

You may safely remove the original JAD files from your phone (but do not remove any files from the \My Documents\temp or \My Documents\recordStores folders). You may need to remove the broken Google Maps/Google Mail apps using the midlet manager if you installed them from the wrong JAD files before reinstalling them using the correct JAD files.

The JAD files are not part of the CAB file.

I urge all readers to refer to the original post and follow it to the letter. No variation of these steps will work properly.

Argh, now I'm having the same problem with the URL midlet error.

My internet is working fine, I've gone to a couple of different websites. I'm going to try a soft reset and see if that helps anything.

The easiest way to get google maps on your phone is to go to this website from your ie web browser on the blackjack www.google.com/gmm

I'm having this same problem, everytime I click on either of the .jar files it comes up with a blank URL for loading the midlet.

I have no trouble with my internet connection, what else could be causing this?

Posted by: Gunner1

OK, re-installing J9 seems to have cleared that issue. However, I don't see any way to adjust font sizes, etc. I loaded Opera Mini and the font was so tiny it was almost illegible. Any resolution for this problem?

Posted by: Gunner1

also, I can confirm that with the version of Java provided, the soft keys for Opera Mini and other applications don't seem to work as expected.

Posted by: otis77

the url issue always works for me if you highlight the google maps midlet select "menu" and select "launch"

If you installed the wrong google maps JAD then you must delete the midlet using the midlet manger. You should also delete the file from you "my documents" folder.

Finally refer to the firts post for instuctions and follow them exactly (unless you have to use the link in one of the previous posts to download j9)

At last... your soft keys should work and google maps should spring to life.

Thanks. great workaround

Posted by: Otep

Great work to OP. tho it would be nice if I can make the font a little bigger but other than that... works great!

Your Soft Keys in Opera Mini 3 work correctly?

Posted by: Otep

I dont know if its just my phone or even a concern... but now after succesfully installing and running this program I noticed that it now runs hot. Is this normal?

Posted by: Otep

ok... took my bj off the wall charger at 6:30 this morning and went off for work now, its about 10:49am and my bj is not turn it on. I wish i had my other battery in hand to see if the battery is drained this fast or otherwise (which I hope so I can go back to Cingy to return this faulty pos) maybe this is due to this .cab file i installed or could be something else and im just in bad luck.

Posted by: Gunner1

It sounds like something is running the cpu at maximum and draining the battery. Noone else seems to be reporting that problem though, maybe it's a different piece of software causing it.

I dont have anything other than what it came with my phone when I got it.. or maybe like I said, just a bad device..

Posted by: dbslims

Otep & Gunner,

Thanks for the posts, these are a major help. I've logged my complaints to both Samsung and Cingular. In the interim I have a few questions about the work around described in this thread:

- Has anyone else experienced the same CPU overheating problem that Otep describes, i.e. symptom heated baterry pack and quick battery life?

-Is it really worthwhile to use the java work around rather than wait for a vendor/provider solution? The most frequently cited apps that are using java seem to be the Opera mini browser and Google maps. Yet the work around seems to render the soft buttons useless on Opera, and create nearly unreadble fonts for both Opera and Google maps. The other threads also seem to cite Virtual Earth as a better app over Google maps. -any thoughts?

Thanks.

Clear out everything in the \My Documents\Temp and \My Documents\recordStores folders. You will need to reinstall the applications using the JAD files in the original post afterwards.

Thanks, that seems to have solved it

Thanks a ton for this fix! I don't know what cingular was thinking crippling java like that. Some sort of money grab. As if paying $40/month for a PDA data plan isn't enough... Now if we could just fix those pesky font sizes.

Cingular didn't cripple anything. You can thank Samsung for the Java version they used. I have none of these problems with my HTC CIngular branded phones.

umm, yer full of crap. Unbranded Nokia E61 does not have the Java probs and the Cingular branded E62 has the same probs the BJ has.

In a developer thread it has already been confirmed that CINGULAR has set the security profiles in Java to be so restrictive that there is no option to allow a session to connect continuously.

And in other news, I found that if you load the "low mem" version of Opera Mini 3 that the soft keys work properly and it doesn't have the reconnect internet problem.

i woudlnt state it this strongly, ahem, but yes, this post is absolutely correct...its called application signing, and its a way for the carriers to control revenue from apps...why do you think cingular has thier own app marketplace bookmarked on the phone?

those that have been around in the windows mobile community for a whille might remember the fiasco that orange went through with this when the first windows mobile devices were released locked on their network. it ended up creating a huge backlash, and showed just how carriers can make profoundly f@#$king stupid decisions motivated by greed.

nokia is aware of this issue with the e62, but theres nothing they can really do about it...i've spoken to nokia people who acknowledge how ridiculous it is.

the best part is, google frankly doesn't care, and they're content to simply watch this backfire on cingular, rather than pay to digitally sign their app, which they're trying to provide for free....

it will backfire, but i think it will unfortunately take a while...i think orange finally stopped this after a year of being abused by the community and ultimately losing revenue....

Right now in the U.S. smart phone users make up a tiny percentage of mobile users. So even if those users are angry at Cingular it's doubtful that Cingular execs will really notice.

The J9 cab file link posted in message #1 has gone completely dead.
The J9 offered on Handago is not listed for WM5 *smartphone*.

Does anyone have an updated link for this?

Thanks.

Do you pay for your internet service? Because I have a sony ericsson phone with Cingular and would like to use my gmail and i've heard of people having free internet.. Just wondering if yours was free or not and how you did it if it was?

Cingular does state in their developer documentation that Java midlets must be signed in order to perform certain security-sensitive operations, among them opening a (non-HTTP/HTTPS) TCP socket, reading the phone book, or sending an SMS/MMS message. (Whether they can be unsigned, whether a signature by Verisign/Thawte is required, or whether a signature by Cingular is required depends is operation-dependent. For many cases, even a signature by Verisign or Thawte -- which is relatively cheap and needs no authorization from Cingular -- will suffice.)

However, in the same documentation, Cingular says that even unsigned Java midlets should be able to open standard HTTP and HTTPS sockets (which are the only operations that Google Maps/GMail/Opera Mini needs to perform) on a per-session basis (instead of just the oneshot option we're seeing on the Blackjack and other new phones). The behavior we're seeing is not consistent with Cingular's own published policy, and therefore I consider it a bug. I've notified Cingular on their developer boards, but I haven't yet received a response.

while i appreciate your logging that as a bug, trust me, you'll get no response. if it was really a bug you wouldnt see it on two of the latest smartphones. they'll change their doc, or blame the jvm, but if they actually allowed the session level access you're describing, there would be no point to signing the app then would there?

Can someone help me in downloading this file. It won't work regardless of what I try.

I'm interested in seeing the JVM behavior of an application signed by a Thawte or Verisign certificate. Again, those are really cheap ($200/year) and should be trivial for Google or Opera to obtain. If the JVM still only allowed one-shot access with those certificates (as opposed to those issued by Cingular), then I'd suspect Cingular of exerting excessive control over their handsets.

Could it be that Cingular simply doesn't want people to use third party apps and wants us to buy them through Cingular Mall? There have been now quite a few phones that show this "allow connection" problem, and this should be obvious to anyone who plays with the phone for 5 minutes.

I think you're on to something here. As posted previously, Orange tried the same thing in the UK.

I've followed the OP instructions for installing J9 and Gmail/Gmaps. THANK YOU very much. I did get around the font issue by finding another thread that talked about this very problem:

http://groups.google.com/group/gmai...1f2de6c39d55e68

I simply unpacked the FONTPA~1.016 file out of the J9 CAB the OP provided and changed the font there to use TAHOMA. I then re-packed the CAB file using CABPACK (freeware).

I then copied the TAHOMA and TAHOMABD from my Windows/fonts folder to the BlackJack. Worked like a charm! The font is small, but much more readable than the original J9 cab file.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the initial work. It works great!

Posted by: otis77

Can you post the re-packed cab file?

Yes, that would be extremely helpful.

Also, as I posted earlier, the soft keys DO function correctly (so you can change font sizes, etc) if you load the "low mem" version of Opera Mini 3 which can also be used to alleviate the font issue.

Hi, sure, just tell me how please, the file size is a bit over 3mb... limit on this site is 2mb.

I have a zip file that includes what you need. The zip file contains the original J9 cab file w/ the modified Font file embedded already. It also contains the required JAD files from Google and a short text file describing the installation. Thanks again to the OP for his work on this.... I KNOW it was time consuming!

Let me know!

If you send the file to me (I've sent you a Private Message with my email address), I will post it to my web site for all.

I've posted carolmar's modified j9.cab to my server. This has the font fix so that the text is more readable. You can download it from this page:

It worked perfectly for me.

This also includes the midlets:
Gmail-1.0.0
Google Maps - 1.4.1

Yes, you have to configure the folder to show hidden files. On the File Explorer window from ActiveSync, go to the Tools menu, Folder Options, and then the View menu. Select "Show Hidden Files". That should do it!

The CAB file installed without a problem. When I try to install the google apps I get a dialog box to specify a URL. I get the same result when I tried a download from google.com/gmm. What am I doing wrong?

You don't hit "Install". Instead, copy the files from the Google folder to the BlackJack, and then use the BlackJack file explorer to find the files and click on them. That will fire off the installation to the device using the IBM J9 JVM. The JAD files you need are included in the zip file. Good luck!

Posted by: otis77

Also, if you are clicking on the java midlet and the url is showing up again, then when the gmm midlet is highlighted, select menu and then launch. Works every time.

Has anyone tried Windows live search. I find it has worked flawlessly

Well this stuff is all Greek to me so please bare with me. First of all I have been unable to view hidden folders in the BJ My Documents folder. When I set the properties in the Active Sync file explorer it only allows me to see the files from my laptop. The files are still hidden on the BJ. I have worked around this my creating a new “Install” folder in my Start menu. That is where I have been dropping the CAB files and that is where I successfully installed the J9 app from.

I have copied the JAD files to the same “Install” folder and clicked on them from the start menu. That launches the J9 app which brings up the URL request. The result is the same as I get just by clicking on the newly installed J9 icon. There is no way to select the JAD files nor do I see a way to navigate to them. I also have the same JAD files in the My Documents folder in case the J9 app was looking for them there.

Any suggestions? (other than trade for a Treo 750)

Please ignore my last post. I went back and re-read the beginning of this post and I was lacking one vital element, that being an active network connection. As so often happens in my office I had lost the network. Once at home it loaded just as advertised. Thanks to all for all the hard work.

That's what I get for goofing off at work.

Can anyone tell me how to totally reinstall the J9.cab. I had it working according to the original instructions but then when i tried to reinstall it with the font fix, now it just keeps prompting me for the url. I've deleted the two folders in the my documents on the blackjack and reset the phone but it still keeps prompting me for the correct url when i run the java midlet.

Posted by: tkascak

Don't mind me, I was able to get it working. Must have been a connection issue. I was able to browse but my svc at home is kind of erratic it seems. Thanks to all for the "fix". Hopefully cingy will reconsider their bad decision but not holding my breath.

OK, if the j9.cab won't work for the 8525 then why won't the GMAPS run correctly? it works like a piece of crappola... OH and one more thing... Blame and/or sue Cingular. It's their fault for forcing their manufacturers to provide a broken Java virtual machine, not HTC's or Samsung's. In fact, according to Cingular's own documentation, these midlets should be capable of using the network on a per-session basis, even though in reality they aren't. And it's unrealistic to expect Google to pay the tollbooth troll (Cingular) for a certificate to work around the problem.

Although Windows Live Search works reasonably well, and supports GPS, Google Maps still has a nicer UI. Also, there's no suitable replacement for the Java GMail client.

Posted by: mwollenweber

I have the same problem with the soft keys being mapped incorrectly. Yes, I downloaded the .jad files from google which has been identified as the source of that problem. But when I try to use the file provided initially, I get an error. If I launch the jad directly it simply opens j9 and doesn't install. If I try to install the jad by specifying the path then I get the error "unable to read jar file from location --gmail url here-- please check the midlet-jar-url.

So no matter which way I try (from gmail, clicking the jar file, or specifying the path), the midlet doesn't work correctly. Any help would be appreciated. I even hard reset my blackjack to make sure there wasn't some oddity going on.

Go to my site and download it from there. It's no strange download site or anything, just my personal blog.

This is an off topic post for this thread, but I'll answer it anyway. Go to Start -> Settings -> System -> Memory -> Running Programs. It's pretty hidden and you should look into getting some sort of launcher program that allows you to close apps. I'm still looking for a good one. I used to use Wisbar Advance when I had an Axim, but it slowed my machine down incredibly so I don't use it anymore.

Posted by: TWDuke

Originally tried the solution posted at the beginning of thread but that did not address the font problems, leading me to revert to the web link version.

I came across the following post which has additional steps to fix the font and vibrating issues. Anyone tried it? Does it work and if so work as well as the app on smartphones where the app officially works?

heh, at first when i got it to all work, the text was all out of whack. then realized i forgot to copy over the tahoma font files. now all is well.

Posted by: simeonfishman

Has anyone noticed that some of the other apps (e.g. RSS reader) now have blown font sizes once you copy the tahoma fonts over for gmail/gmaps?

Any way to use a different font or stop the system from defaulting to use the copied tahoma and stop making our other apps wierd looking?

All beginning to seem like quite a hassle to get round Cingular's overly ambitious Java security model.

Thanks. Unfortunately, that doesn't work. I've hit every key on the phone and none will get me to the ACCEPT button for the EULA. Others must be having this problem--not sure how to accept so I can't use Google maps.

I have tried this several times, and it is not working. Any suggestions??

Do not hit the install button when gmail is highlighted. Instead just hit the Ok button to launch the application.

Even under J9, you'll still be prompted, but the difference is that there is an option to allow access for an entire session, as opposed to only oneshot access. There is no option to allow HTTPS permanently. This behavior is consistent with the applicable JSR specifications.

Yes! I'm having this problem too. The only way to add recipients is to scroll to them, but since I have loads of contacts, this takes a long time.

The keys type weird characters in the search box.

Anyone else?

I cannot even type into the send box. I would settle for that. It will not let me and takes me to the recipients page. Where I have the same problem as you.

This is a bummer.

I'm not sure it has exactly--but here's the solution. You must install the Google maps JAD file linked in this thread. The one from the Google maps website has the EULA accept issue.

Ok- I'm definitely connected to the internet as I can actually launch it when I click on the gmaps-generic-file and select Actions -> Launch. Every time I click install however, it asks for a URL. Any advice?

Just skip the install step by clicking: action, and then launch. Someone posted this a few pages back. Works for me. This is the only way I can get on, and I think it is the main way everyone else is as well.

when i get to the step of installing the gmail and google maps jad files, i'm having trouble. a screen pops up that says "midlet list" and scrolling text comes across. there are no applications to install on the screen. then, if i click on "install" it leads me to a window where i have to input the URL for the midlet...what the heck is this? thanks!

OK I did everything as it was stated and everything worked, but then for some stupid reason i delted the cab file for the j9 app and now it will not work. I get an error it says "emulator.exe is not a valid windows CE application". I have no idea what this means. I have already tried reintalling the J9 app and i keep on getting same error. Please Help.

The fix was to restart phone. LOL

Thanks a kazillion for the J9 file (I was told elsewhere that this is what I needed, but tracking it down at the IBM site was impossible!) and the Gmail and Google Maps links. I think I've got everything installed correctly, but have been wrestling with Gmail.

It took me forever to figure out that at the username prompt, I needed to hit the OK button on the d-pad in order to type my username, and again at the password prompt in order to type my password.

Now, however, I'm stuck. I can see "exit" above the HOME key and "Sign In" above the BACK key, but nothing I do actually gets me logged in. Is this the softkey problem others have complained about? I read every post here rather carefully and it sounds like a different problem.

Thanks in advance for any help you can point me in the direction of.

Anyone knows how to fix the font size issue, its tooooo small

Great thread. Worked like a charm for me!

I'm having a significant problem with running apps on the BJ. After a few seconds of inactivity in many apps including GMaps, it throws me back to the home screen. It's HIGHLY frustrating and makes using GMaps nearly impossible. What am I doing wrong?

I think you may have set a timeout on your display setting
Goto Start -> Settings -> Display -> Home Screen -> Timeout
set the value to "Never" or a bigger number that you like

Let me know if this fixes it or not

Posted by: anandas007

Hello, if anyone could please send me the J9 file to anandas007 (at) yahoo .com it would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

For all who are asking where to get J9, you can download it here:

www.j-host.net/blackjack

This one has the font fix installed in it and has gmail and google maps in it too. You just need the Tahoma font from your Windows mahine.

Let me know if you don't have windows and I will post the font up there too...

when i try to install it, it asks me to enter the url of the midlet im installing. i try to enter www.google.com/gmm and it doesn't work. what do i do now?

Posted by: Rysjimmy1994

your entering the wrong thing. use the right soft key, and got to history. then click the location on the pop up

Posted by: zyrtek

now when i got it to install but now i can't accept the terms and conditions. the right soft key responds but it does not accept the terms?

Posted by: zyrtek

i am having a problem. after i run gmaps it loads fine but asks me to accept the terms and conditions of the application. the words "accept" and "decline" are right above the blue bar which represent my softkeys. how is anyone getting to accept the terms and conditions

Posted by: zyrtek

I fu#@ing got it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yay thanks a lot to all of your posts

Posted by: fattylumpkin

How did you accept the "terms and conditions?" I am having the same problem you did?

now that we've all got the Gmail app working nicely, I was having the hardest time figuring out how to log off. Exiting wouldn't do it. Turns out there's a setting in the options to choose if you want to have Gmail keep you logged in or not. I turned mine off just in case.

How do I go about uninstalling the fonts from the Blackjack?

I've tried everything I can think of, but still keep getting an error message about the fonts being used by another program.

This will serve as an interim fix until Samsung/Cingular releases an update to fix the problem with JBlend for good.

This works great for me with one exception: GMail attachment previews don't work. Any advice?

Hey guys,

I was wondering about Step 5, specifically where it states "Make sure you have a working network connection!" What is this referring to exactly? I ask because I am planning on purchasing a BlackJack with a data plan. Previously, I thought I had the option between Media Net and PDA Connect (also known as Data Connect when it is not unlimited). But I was proven wrong by a rep today after trying to corner them into admitting that Media Net is ok to check emails, that it is no longer an option. You guys could check it out at this link:

http://www.cingular.com/cell-phone-...q_sku=sku300002

Click on Services and look under the "Data Features" section. It [MediaNet bundles] was an option a couple of days ago when I checked. Also, my friend got a rep over the phone to give them a Media Net bundle just last week. While I may be getting a little to deep, my question simply is:

What data plan is needed or referred to in these instructions to properly use the Gmail app and not get charged extra for data usage?

It would be between PDA Connect Unlimited and Media Net unlimited. But I guess since Media Net is no longer an option (at least online), it would have to be PDA Connect Unlimited, right?
I started a tread about which service should be used for Gmail at:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1079645

I just want to get the Blackjack and have as little headaches (and overcharges) as possible. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

[QUOTE=thinlyveiled]I have finally managed to get Google Maps and GMail working 100% on my Blackjack, without constantly asking me whether the applications should be allowed permission to connect.

I got the mapping app to work but can't figure out which download or piece governs the part where it won't ask me for permission ever two seconds. Possible to tell which which piece I need?

Thank you so much for this solution, I have been looking for weeks for a suitable map solutions, this seems very promising!

I must be doing something wrong. I download the j9.cab, I saved it to My Documents, I used the file explorer to find it and I click to install. It get almost to the end and then reports that the install was unsuccessful. Any ideas?

Please disregard, I ran out of memory. Everything works great.

could someone please email me the j9 cab file at madness3881@gmail.com

Check the thread. It has been posted multiple times where it can be downloaded .

Thanks to thinlyveiled, carolmar, jaust, and others for your help. I installed successful but still have not resolved the font issue.

I wasn't able to add the tahoma fonts because I can't get the Windows folder to come up even after clicking Explore and then "My Windows Mobile-Based Device" as you instructed. I did not set up an Outlook account and thought that this might be the reason. I do have the Windows/fonts folder on my Blackjack though, it's just not showing up using Explore on Active Sync.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Bertie

Posted by: mbranscum

The exit and sign in soft keys on gmail won't work in J9. Am I missing something here?

Posted by: bertie

I was able to add the tahoma fonts. The "Windows" folder is hidden. Show all folders and then you'll find the fonts folder.

Thanks everyone.

Bertie

I've tried everything to get the j9.cab file on the Blackjack. It's there, taking up space, and I can view it from ActiveSync Explorer, but not on the phone itself. I can search for it and find it, but I cannot run it. I tried the posted workaround (creating an Install folder and placing it there) but that did not work for me either. Anyone have a fix?

BTW, here are my contributions (right click, save as):

From the ZIP file posted here
http://www.wiiloaded.com/j9.cab
http://www.wiiloaded.com/gm-Generic-Advanced_MIDP2.jad
http://www.wiiloaded.com/gmaps-Gene...ed_MIDP2_L1.jad

Plus the two font files you're looking for:

http://www.wiiloaded.com/tahoma.ttf
http://www.wiiloaded.com/tahomabd.ttf

EDIT: You know what? Screw it. I've always used Opera and Google for everything, but PIE works much better than it did on my 8125, and Live Search is really good, so I'll just use those instead this time around.

Once an Opera Mobile made for the Blackjack is released, I'll try that. I never liked running programs in that silly Java thingy.

I agree ! PIE is much better than what it was on imate Jam and Live search is much better than that Java J9 hassle!

I am not sure but for no apparent reason, today my IBM Java would launch then quit, not giving me a chance to run any applications.

Anyone have a problem when they try and compose mail? For some reason if I type in, let's say, "S" in the contacts field it only comes up with a few people under "S."

Also, the keys seem to get screwed up. The I press don't show up correctly on the screen.

Again, this is ONLY when I compose mail and search through contacts.

Yes...I have this problem too. Anyone hear of a solution?

Posted by: irievibe

I've isntalled j9 and fonts successfully, but I have the problem that has been posted where when I click OK on the gmail.jar file in file explorer i just get the J9 screen with install and action being the only options. Install just takes me to a prompt for a url to install from. I have no midlets installed in history. I have read the entire thread (no small feat), but have somehow missed the resolution for this (sorry for the repost).

Thanks!
Mike

Posted by: irievibe

Dont kill me! OK I'll just answer my own question by adding the troubleshooting step of:

*make sure your data connection is enabled and working when you install the .jar files. I swear I thought it was on . . .

Thanks for this link! http://www.j-host.net/blackjack/

Posted by: Runes

Officially awesome. The font size doesn't seem too bad without the extended workaround so whoo.

Thanks OP and everyone else who commented in this thread. Dunno if anyone else is/was having the "error" I was, but if you have signal and the midlet is asking for the URL, go back, click the file again and instead of hitting the "..." for "install" click the ok button instead. That seemed to completely fix the issue. :3

Posted by: Morning Dew

After installing J9 and gmail and gmap, everything works much better. However, the display font that's being used makes the email, headers, and everything else close to unreadable. Does any know how I can change/fix this font issue?

could someone pls email me the cab file so i can run gmaps on my blackjack thanks in advance. The list as you know doesnt work I need ibm websphere java j9.
