You're clicking install. Just highlight the app you wanna run and click OK or choose Actions --> Launch.

ah ha...the linked page said to install them, so that is what i was trying.

works via "launch".

thanks!

i seem to be stuck at the 'terms and conditions'.

it never loads...

any ideas?

I've found that you can drag fonts from Windows into the phone. However, I find the font size to be far smaller than I would like. Does anyone know how to choose a different font size?

First of all thank you very much to thinlyveiled, caralmar, jaust and everyone else who contributed to this thread! I just got my gmail and maps working on my BlackJack thanks to all of you and I really appreciate the information & files you have provided.

Now a question - does anyone know if the J9 program will run java based cellphone games? I really liked the Block Breaker Deluxe by Gameloft that was on my Razr v3i - but the Gameloft website says they don't offer games for smartphones & pdas. I don't want to pay for it if it's not going to work. Any info appreciated!

Posted by: solidunit

J9 crashes on startup for me. I've uninstalled and reinstalled also, still getting the same behavior.

It actually just comes up for a split second, then disappears.

Posted by: Zingasm

I've been using Sprint+ various versions of Treo for several years and recently got the blackjack since i need data and voice internationally.
i haven't ported my number yet, but have now decided the handset is worth doing so. bye bye sprint...

i read the gmail/J9 thread from start to finish and followed instructions exactly. it worked perfectly the first time. yeah, it's a bit clunky to have to navigate to your folder and 'launch' every time via menu command, but i'm sure some clever folks here will improve that for us over time.

~z
ps, great board, glad to know it exists.

You don't have to navigate to a folder and use the menu to launch the Google apps. There should be a J9 icon in the items that appear after you hit the Start key. Once you select it, the google apps are listed there and you can choose either maps or gmail and click to launch from there.

The J9 Program can be added to speed dial to cut out one step.

Posted by: knightto

Can't seem to find J9 now that I have a blackjack and can't get gmail to work! help?

Posted by: styx66

J9 no longer needed for google maps.

http://www.google.com/gmm/index.htm...tm_campaign=gmm

lower left, download cab.

works fine.

Has anyone been able to get a BT gps receiver to work with Google maps anf there Black Jack? I can get maps to work just no gps tracking. thanks
Jeff

Posted by: dfgreat1

So, guys, There is good info here that seems clearcut, but i think that there must be multiple versions of these files running arround. I spent the last 5 hours trying to get it to work and all of the sudden it did. I have no idea why or how. So, to all you people like me that are trying to figure it out, it can work!

Guess you guys missed this post http://howardforums.com/showpost.ph...25&postcount=29

Yes, I did miss it....but still can't get it to work.

Can someone translate that into steps using resco for an idiot like me, please?

If you really like to use GPS integration, Windows Live Search Mobile (just out of beta and officially released today) is known to have easier integration with GPS. http://wls.live.com. The map looks better than Google map and the final release fixed a few issue I have with the beta.

Posted by: xdaatom

I just install J9 on my xda atom. It works fine except it vibrates while streaming data. Does anybody know, how to avoid vibration. Waiting for someone's help.

Dude, SOMEBODY FIGURE OUT SOMETHING ABOUT THE SOFT KEY mapping problem, PLEASE!

All of the idiots in this thread who haven't read all 15 pages (as I have) are like "drr, where i get file . CAB meekeajff"

I KNOW where that is, and the fonts are working, but dear god, I can't log into gmail. this is is so irritating! can you guys please help?

Posted by: marquis19

Why does everyone want gma app to work on the bj? I have been using gmail through IE, and been having a good experience with it so far. I giess my question is why doesnt more people use gmail through ie instead of gmail app?

Posted by: Dillon-K

Using it in IE is slower and uglier.

I had been using it in IE, but it recently started refusing to send email. The send button just wouldn't work. That's why I came back to griping in this thread.

I am having the same problem, and have looked everywhere for a resolution with no luck. So that said, has anybody figured out the mapping issue with the Gmail app? I happen to be having the same problem with Opera Mini and Gmail on my BJ and it is really irritating. The only app that doesn't have an issue in J9 is google maps.

Posted by: rekkid

I've had gmail and gmaps working just fine with J9 since I got the phone in January... but today I installed MS Voice Command and when testing it out, I said open "J9" and it opened the old Java (Jblend) and now J9 wont run correctly and thusly gmail. When I open J9, it starts up for for a sec, and then shuts down. I tried to reinstall J9 with no luck. Whenever I try to reinstall the gmail jad, J9 starts up and then shuts down.

Anyone have any ideas? I use the gmail app about 90% of the time.

Posted by: coreynyc

OK. What am I doing wrong?

I downloaded and installed J9 but I am still getting the endless loop of:

<<<Use Network?

Gmail is trying to use HTTPS for communication....>>>

This is my first time trying the J9-Gmail combo. I downloaded and installed all necessary files. When I get to the sign in screen of Gmail. The "sign-in" softkey does not line up with the actual key press. Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem. I type in my user name and password but then I'm just stuck in the sign in screen. The sign in button is right above the soft key.

Posted by: dirtywater

I have Gmail/Gmaps working great, and thank you to everyone who contributed to making this work.

Question. If someone sends me a picture to my Gmail account, is there anyway to save the pic to either my Blackjack or to my storage card? I can't figure it out.

Thank you.

Posted by: lopezpm

I got GMail to work now. I Reset my phone and followed the instructions and it now works. I would also like to thank everyone involved on making it work.

Posted by: coreynyc

Is there anyway to fix the softkey problem without resetting the phone?

I have downloaded/installed everything and my softkeys aren't lined up.

Delete the files that you got and start from scratch. Did you try to install it before with out using the process and files found here? I think that was a mistake I made I was trying to use the gmail app found on google instead of the one found on here. Then when I tried the one found here it wouldn't overwrite it. I really can't be sure what made it work. I restarted my phone and installed it, and it just worked. Sorry I can't be more helpful. But it did only take me 10 minutes to load everything back into my phone. I always keep a Phone folder with Homescreens and Programs on my PC. I always have them ready cause I like to mess with my phones a lot.

Posted by: coreynyc

OK so I uninstalled and reinstalled everything, got Gmail to work but why are the fonts funky (some letter are bigger than others)...and yes I installed Tahoma.

Posted by: Phillydude411

Got Gmail to work on my phone, Thanks to this forum!

But How do I sign out of one Gmail acct to log onto a different Gmail account?

Posted by: mcoquet

Hi all

I've been reading this great thread because in France the BlackJack is shipped without Java/MIDP2 support for whatever reason but still, I wanted to install GMail on my phone !

So if I recap :
1) ActiveSync on > send files to My Documents & Windows/Fonts folders
2) ActiveSync off > Install J9.cab (installed it on my storage card, does it make a difference ?)
3) run J9
4) prompted with "install" or "actions", I press "install"
5) I'm stuck here, with J9 prompting me for a URL, I enter "/My Documents/gm-generic-advanced_MIDP2.jad"
6) J9 message : "About to install MIDlet "Gmail"...Proceed?" => Yes
7) J9 starts the install
8) Stuck here, with J9 message : "Error - Unable to read the jar file from location : http://gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gmail-g.jar. Please check the MIDlet-Jar-URL"

I also read above that you need to have "data connection enabled" for this, does it mean I have to launch IE on start page to initiate a connection and install ?

Please if anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated

Thank You !

Posted by: mcoquet

OK, right, following the previous error message I got (see above), i figured out after installing J9 that I would just download the gmail JAR file from http://gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gmail-g.jar and upload it through activesync to my blackjack.

guess what ? it works ! I just tapped the said JAR file and J9 opened, I then selected Actions > Launch in J9 menu and voila !

only thing now is it says "network unavailable", so I don't know how to solve this...

I was to download the gmail and gmaps. It's the java one that I don't have.

Thanks.

for gmaps, go to http://www.google.com/gmm with your mobile browser.

for gmail : http://gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gmail-g.jar, plus java : http://www.wiiloaded.com/j9.cab

I'll second this. Looking to buy a BlackJack tomorrow.

Posted by: jaust

For all who are asking where to get J9, you can download it here:

www.j-host.net/blackjack

This one has the font fix installed in it and has gmail and google maps in it too. You just need the Tahoma font from your Windows mahine.

Let me know if you don't have windows and I will post the font up there too...

Posted by: ladcoy

Okay, I finally bit the bullet and bought the Blackjack today, in part because of the great support for push gmail noted here. Thank you all for the great instructions and fearlessness of pressing on trying until it works!

I just tried to download the first file, the .CAB file and it has apparently been removed! Gasp! Any further suggestions?

Posted by: magno101

It seems like the link posted for the files is down. Can you please post a new link?

Posted by: jaust

Posted by: izzat786

So, how do you fix the font problem on the app?

Posted by: mikee805

i am sure this is a dumb question but after you install everything (j9, gmail and google maps) do you need to keep the .cab and .tad files? Thanks.

Posted by: Wallslide

The thread is too long for me to go back and check if someone has mentioned this yet...

The google maps app now works perfectly without the J9 VM. Now if Google would just hurry up and update the gmail application..

Posted by: sheik124

For anyone that still needs the answer:

The softkey issue is caused by using the JAD from www.gmail.com/app, which is for Samsung Advanced MIDP2 devices. The JAD included in the ZIP is generic and maps the soft keys correctly, as it probably treats J9 as a generic Java environment, rather than expecting to work the same way as it did under the stock Samsung JRE.

Posted by: seyffert

I have followed the instructions, but when in step 4 when I click on J9.cab it first asks me to click 'install' to install a Java application, and then asks me to 'Enter the URL of the MIDlet that you would like to install'. Forgive my ignorance, but can anyone tell me what the URL should be? Thanks.

When you start J9 for the first time it asks you that because there are no Java programs installed yet. Simply exit and then run the google mail JAD and then it will install to J9 automatically.

Dude, read the ****ing thread. You can't just read the first 4 posts and call it good. These questions have been answered like 15 times already. Retards.

Posted by: jk5598224

OK I did read thru the thread (threaded mode). Should Google Maps and GPS work with the BJ???

According to google yes. At this time, only Google Maps for Helio subscribers and for Windows Mobile devices (regardless of provider) are enabled with GPS;

Posted by: roybot3000

Any way around not getting the "Can Gmail use airtime to send or receive via an https connection until gmail terminates?" message?

Also, is there anyway to keep the gmail app open?

Right now, all I want is for my phone to alert me whenever I have a new email. What is the best for this? I tried setting up push for gmail but it seems like its not working.

On the one hand, I agree with you. However, on the other hand it would be best if the original post is updated with the new info, links, etc., to simiplify things. The thread is now 18 pages long.

Lets face it, until the problem is resolved, folks will continue coming here via a google search (like I did) and these same folks may, or may not, have time or make the effort to read the entire thread. Hence, why an update is best for everyone.

Posted by: mzabriskie

I am following the instructions found at http://www.j-host.net/blackjack/ I have installed the j9.cab, and am trying to install the GMail. I am at the point that it says "Enter the URL of the MIDlet that you would like to install."

What do I enter here? Is this the URL of GMail?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Posted by: m1 grant

the site seems to be taken down, anybody else get this?

Posted by: cellphoneuser12

The link to that .cab file doesn't seem to be working for me. Anyone else have the file out there?

Thanks.

Posted by: ipodlover77

the j9 file should be on page 11 or so. I installed it and then uninstalled it. The fonts on it seemed as if it did not fit. Those anyone have an idea when the Gmail App will officially work? I mean the app from the website without having to download anything else.

Posted by: moocowh

I'd like to thank EVERYONE here for their hard work in fixing the issue. As I was perusing the thread, I noticed many of the links for download of J9 aren't working.. until I cam upon these. Each one of these works.. and they work marvelously.

http://www.wiiloaded.com/j9.cab
http://www.wiiloaded.com/gm-Generic-Advanced_MIDP2.jad
http://www.wiiloaded.com/gmaps-Gene...ed_MIDP2_L1.jad

http://www.wiiloaded.com/tahoma.ttf
http://www.wiiloaded.com/tahomabd.ttf

Does anyone know a way to keep the app running in the background? It's bothersome to have to click the J9 icon every time. If not, it's well worth it just to have something that actually works!

Thanks again to everyone for their time!

Posted by: dkhomdds

Strange things are happening for me. I have had J9 installed and working for the past 9 months. I have been using gmail, opera, and google maps via J9. All of the sudden I can not access the midlet list and the J9 program does not run. I attempted to "uninstall J9" and then turn Off/On the phone and reinstall "J9" and the same thing. I can not get it to run or see any midlets. It's not even letting me "install" anything. Perhaps there was a time limit on the j9 program files and Today 7/10/2007 was the date that the limit hit??? With J9 removed I can install with java files, gmail/opera/etc... with the original java that came with the Blackjack but the softkeys are messed up...So I know its not the phone.... But "j9" I reinstalled j9 about 5 times and it does not work....

Anyone?? Thanks...

UPDATE-> for some reason something got messed up in either one of these two folders..

Mydocs>temp
Mydocs>recordstores

I deleted all info in both reinstall j9 and the java files for gmail/gmap/opera and all is fine now...

Go figure... and yes this was posted somewhere in this thread somewhere in the 1st 10 pages....

Posted by: carlos1583

I just bought a blackjack yesterday and I am frustrated that I still don't understand the directions. I installed J9 and the gmail file. It works fine but how do I add the font? So far they are in phone but I don't know what to do with them. I simply want a program that will let me recieve and send emails through gmail and I might end up using xpress mail since it did work when I first installed it. Please help me out here...

Posted by: player911

Why don't you people just setup Gmail through the messaging program of your phone? Why even use a Gmail app when you can send and receive gmail using your built in client?

And why use a Java based Google Maps when Google has specifically made a program for Windows Mobile that:
Runs Faster
Integrates into the shell
Doesn't use up Java
Copy and paste capabilities using Vito Copy and paste.

I just don't understand it.
www.i607.org
There's the complete instructions on setting up Gmail.

Google Maps... just go to google and download it.

Posted by: carlos1583

I did set up google maps from google.com and it works. I did try using the pop3 to set up gmail but I'm not getting anything in the inbox. Should install xpress mail and then set it up? I got rid of the java because it was just too much of a pain.

Posted by: carlos1583

YES: I finally did it.

http://www.blackjackusers.com/forum...re%20for%20info

This clarified the situation a little more. Unfortunately, I did end up losing some emails when I deleted some from my phone yesterday (working yesterday but not today). Hopefully it wasn't anything important. Forget the java...this works better IMO

Posted by: player911

See. 911 takes care of you.

You can choose to NOT delete your messages when you delete them from your phone. I don't like my phone being able to delete my Gmail emails.

Just read them and reply to them. This keeps my phone clean and my emails safe. I think the URL you posted is the one I used actually. www.i607.org is just easier to remember.

Posted by: fochsenhirt

I still say using POP3 defeats the primary purpose of Gmail. May as well just use the email account from your ISP. The java app, for all its faults, lets you archive mail, flag spam, star messages and apply labels. POP3 lets you do none of those things.

Posted by: robvia

Another option for gmail is their mobile site. www.google.com/m

It works well on the phones I have, I would expect it to work well on most all phones. You can setup a home page with the things you want, like weather and stocks. You can go directly to your inbox. In the mobile view, you cannot apply a label, but in the basic HTML view you can. No POP3, you are logged onto your account. HTML loads slower since it has more graphics.

Only problem is it's not push, so you have to go check it. The POP3 is nice because you can set it to check every 15 minutes. It will alert you of a new message.

Would be interesting to hear Java vs. mobile page.

Posted by: robvia

You can also access your on-line phone albums from your phone. Doesn't look like O get a full res picture on the phone, which is kind of a bummer. Doesn't have a zoom option like the computer does.

Opera Mini displays the image better than IE on the phone.

Posted by: SunnyE

I setup the phone's Messaging program with Gmail "recent" option. It is very well synchronized for a 30 day windows. If I delete on phone it gets deleted on server. If I send from phone, it shows up as sent on server (no other pop server does this !!). Spam is NOT downloaded as POP. What else can you ask for ?? Ok maybe archive/stared etc. but this is not a Java app, it is real deal. Copy/paste and offline access makes this option a winner.

Posted by: player911

Yea I agree. Why bother with a basic java app or hassle with loading up a webpage and screwing with usernames and passwords, when you can just set it up in messages and have it automatically get your emails every 15 minutes or whatever (i set it hourly).

Although I don't have mine delete from the server. I like to keep the server copy on gmail (because thats how gmail works, achieves). When using this option, then logging into Gmail.com, it'll have all your conversations (sent and received) just like if you were replying through the internet site.

Posted by: seyffert

I have now managed to set up gmail by way of j9, which is OK if you have Internet access, but if you're in the bush you can't read old emails you have already received. Thus I've given it another try and, applying the 'recent' trick now also manage to receive gmail using the telephone's POP application. Can't get it to send e-mails though. I'm sure it is just a matter of getting the settings right. Can anyone provide me with advice?

I just have Google Maps installed directly to my phone and don't use the lesser Java version.

Gmail I set up in my messages so it displays it on my phone.

Why oh Why would anyone want to use the java versions. Those versions are DESIGNED for phones that can't be expanded any other way (like Razrs). Google makes apps for Windows Mobile phones so why not use those?

911- I didnt know there was a Google Maps just for the BJ. When I searched for it originally, this was the first thread that came up, so I went with it.

Can you link me, or at least send me in the right direction to the app designed for the WM.

yes I have Gmail version 1.5.0 (Java version with IBM J9) running on my Blackjack I607. You need to Mod the "jad" file that gets downloaded from google. I cant take the credit for it but read up on it in this thread here on Hofo.....

Same problem here...anyone have a suggestion for us? If I click the OK button, it brings up the app, but it won't install the app so that I can access it from the start menu or Today screen...

I tried, maybe I passed up the link elsewhere in the forum, but I tried the link on the first page, both of them to download the actual Java client, and neither one worked. Anyone know where I can get it for my BJI running cooked WM6.1? Thanks!

Hello,

As I have D/L, the latest GMail Mobile app. to my Blackjack I (i607) device with the official Samsung/AT&T WM6 ROM), and it seems to be working correctly with the default built-in Java code..

I do NOT need to utilize the IBM Java J-9 files to have it run correctly....Definitely interesting as the Google Mobile App, seems to run now without any tweaks......fonts, IBM Java files, etc.

EDIT:

Apologies, after I have fully tried the complete functions alas.......no full success.....darn it.
