Will Spanish Vodafone phone work with UK Vodafone SIM?

If I buy a phone that is locked to Vodafone in Spain on a tarjeta payment plan (i.e pay as you go) will I then be able to come back to the UK and simply put a UK Vodafone SIM card in it without the need to unlock the phone?!
