Samsung Ultra Messaging i600

Samsung just went and officially took the wraps off the i600 we already caught struttin' around Europe a few months ago. The WinMo 5.0 Smartphone picked up the Sammy "Ultra" branding as well as the angular QWERTY found on the i607 BlackJack and preferred by German Sprockets. However, unlike the Blackjack, the i600 packs in 802.11b/g WiFi and a second VGA cam up front. Fully packed, we're looking at GSM/EDGE UMTS/HSDPA, MS Push email, RSS reader, speakerphone, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and A2DP stereo audio support, and 64MB RAM / 128MB ROM on-board memory with microSD expansion. More importantly, it's quad-band GSM contrary to earlier reports and measures in at a qualified, "world's thinnest" 11.8-mm (0.46-inches) / 99-grams (3.5-ounces) which is slimmer than Cingular's lesser Blackjack yet weighs the same. Super. Now the rub: although FCC approved, the Ultra Messaging i600 is only announced for Asia Pacific and Europe thus far -- sometime in Q1, 2007.

"It blends the feature-rich, desktop functionality of the Windows Mobile 5.0 platform with multimedia capabilities to help people work on the go"...does this mean editing word/excel files or just viewing them like the typical wm5 smartphone?

How is this phone slimmer i thought the blackjack was .46 this also
is the only difference the second cam and wifi why can't cingular giv e us a non cripled phone for once i mean damn i was all happy then i see this and well i am a little mad i mean come on what the hell

I am not convinced wifi is such a necessary add-on. With unlimited data and 3G, do you really need it? Things might load faster, but the processor and memory will always be a limiting factor. I have found, for what I need, the BJ is great. But I don't use the web that much, nor is video a big deal.

Am I missing something?

$10 says Bluetooth is broken on this phone too.

its not the wifi that i really care about it is the fact that you buy something and a week later they show you the same phone but with little addons that could of been the phone you bought but cingular takes them out like the front facing camera. dont get me wrong i lve my blackjack but if i never saw the i600 i would be happy
what i realy want to know is why cingular doesnt want video calling why dont they even offer it i mean no else hs it maybe they could be diffrent, they have push to talk and barely anybody uses that maybe cingular shoulld try to be diffrent all mobile carriers are almost the same in my book some have high speed data but they all will soon and everyone has nationwide coverage or atempt to so give me something that maked me special thats all i ask for is that too much i dont mean to go off on a rant or anything

Looks like a nice phone but the wi-fi is not that exciting to anyone in a 3G area. I am guessing it will kill the battery even quicker (at least that is what happens on my TyTn). It would be a nice addition to anyone not in 3G areas but hopefully Cingular is going to be fixing that in the next year.

Where does it say that the phone is quadband?

I may choose this over the blackjack.

I could definitely live without the forward-facing camera. I don't know of anyone else who would have it, so it's not like I could video chat with anyone. I also agree with those above who said that Wi-Fi is not that big of a deal anymore. I'm spoiled by having almost constant 3G coverage, but even without I can't imagine an instance in which I would need Wi-Fi.

Debating whether to get the i600 or the Blackjack..... if i get the i600 i am guaranteed at least EDGE speeds and wifi.... Does anyone know what UMTS frequencies this phone operates at? Is it triband like the Treo 750v? or does it only do UMTS 2100 Mhz European frequency? I know that Fido/Rogers in Canada and Cingular uses the UMTS 850/1900 Mhz bands...

I am guessing the two phones are likely the same hardware (except for the obvious lack of front facing camera), and flashing the blackjack with the i600 rom, might 'activate' wifi.

It won't activate wifi because there is no wifi chip in the blackjack.

You have to factor in how much Wi-Fi Hot Spots or Municple Access would cost verse 3G or Unlimited Data service.

$39.99 x 12 months= $479+ annually.

Hot Spots or Muni Wi-Fi= Generally free or no binding to the contract in progress.

If you have $500 to throw away, then by all means do it. But, Wi-Fi for the devices should always be an alternative for the long run for those who don't have $500 to throw away.
