I saw the BB Pearl today!

I got a chance to see it but it had no SIM. It looked and felt very nice. I would definitely consider purchasing it.

Hm... any other details?

Posted by: pufftissue

it's been out for a long time, but it's NICE. Lack of 3rd party apps is its achilles' heel. otherwise i'd want it.

I bought one for my dad last night. It's a really nice phone.

I've never been able to get him to carry a smartphone because he has always complained about the size. He likes very small phones that he can carry in his pants pocket next to his wallet. This was the first one he actually liked.

Just remember that it is NOT a 3G phone, which surprised me that RIM would put out a non-3G phone, especially now. Also, keep in mind that it does not have a QWERTY keyboard, but rather SureType, which is somewhat cumbersome if you want to write quick emails/IM's/notes, etc.

Sure it's not 3g. I can deal with that, given the diminutive size of the device.

That said, SureType is anything but cumbersome. I've used Treos (650) QWERTY BlackBerrys (8700) and suretype BB's (7130 and now a Pearl) and I find SureType to be the best solution. You need to use it for more than 5 minutes in a store. It's quick and it learns your tendencies. Plus, it's essentially a spell check.

I use my BB all day, every day, for email, and I would not go back to a purely QWERTY keyboard.

BB already has a 3G device .. (8707), and they're coming out with another one for cingular too.

Pretty typical response from someone who havent gave SureType a try. It took me a day to get used to typing in SureType and its a lot quicker to type in SureType than QWERTY in my opinion....

I must say this is my second BB (7130 and now Pearl) and previous to that all other models and this Pearl has everything... and its the best phone I have ever had..

Coming from a 8700c, and previously a Nokia E61. I will say the Pearl is the best device for me so far. The size is amazing compared to the 8700 (not a belt clip wearing person), and the Suretype is much faster than the QWERTY. The actual speed of the device is good too. The E61 was just too slow to be productive. 3g is irrelevant to me since I'm not trying to stream movies or surf the net, other than to check a sports score every now and then. EDGE is sufficient. And not to mention the voice quality is much better than previous RIM devices I've used.

Mine will be arriving today via FedEx. I am using the 7130 right now and am looking forward to the size of the Pearl. Everything I read about it says its the best BB out to date so I am pretty excited to try it out. Seems like everytime I get a device set up the way I like it, I have to get a newer model!!!! Thank goodness for PC backup's!

You are absolutely correct. SureType is fantastic. I can type up an email at least twice as fast as I could on my old iPAQ. Hats off to RIM!

I just don't understand why so many people go with he BlackBerries when you can get a Windows Mobile device that can connect directly to your mail server. I hate the way the BlackBerries email system works in that emails are always on a 15 minute delay. I need my mobile messaging to be always-on always-instant. BES can do this, but it is just adding functionality onto Exchange that it already has. Unless RIM gives the corporate world a way to connect their BB's to Exchange directly in the next couple years, I think that RIM will be a thing of the past. At the very least, the BB will take a complete 180 in who it is marketed too (Personal vs. Corporate).

I say, why get a Pearl when you can get a BlackJack for the same price.

why? perhaps you've missed the above posts in which the authors rave about suretype. to each his own.

I use the BIS service and I get emails instantly. I just forward my work emails to my mycingular.blackberry.net account, and it pushes them right to my handheld. No exchange server required. No 15 minute delay.

I just switched from a 7130 to a Pearl and I agree that this is RIM's best device ever, and probably the best smartphone that I have ever used.

I get nearly instantaneous email through BIS, no delays here. BES email hits my handheld before it hits my Outlook inbox.

…not everyone wants 3G, needs 3G, or has 3G available in their area. As to Suretype, it takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it is not cumbersome at all.

Stability, intuitive and user friendly UI, and it does what it was designed to do well. I get my e-mail almost instantly. I don't need more functionality that what a Blackberry offers; some people do; some don't. It's called different strokes for different folks.

As many others have stated, I get corporate emails in my BB even before it hits my Outlook box so not being instantaneous is a bogus claim.

And you ask why so many people go with BB instead of Windows ? Have you seen all the threads about 8125, 3125 8528 crashing and losing memory all the time ? all the little tweaks and you have to make to registry etc... trust me I know cause I had them..

With BB, I dont have that problem. Being able to connect to corporate email, personal email, messaging, picture, music, video.. being able to combine personal life into work is wonderful and not having the headache of recycle the OS is definitely a plus.

Stability is a top priority for me and it is precisely why I use a Blackberry (two, actually). I'll settle for delayed 3G support if it means better stability.

I understand completely why a WM user may say this. I was a windows mobile user till i had to get an 8700 through my company....kicking and *****ing about it i had no choice. After you have a BB and see how quick/efficient & solid they are it i hard to go back. I have tried but ran back to the BB's. In fact we can now have any pda phone we want and after trying the BJ & 8525, i selected the Pearl. Best BB to date. IU is enhanced..phone quality is 10x better than my old 8700.
As far as RIM being a thing from the past, my Cingular contact tells me BB sales are increasing every qtr over other segments. Also, why do so many want the BB connect feature for their WM devices??

You'll find out in 3 months when the BlackJack stops working. I made a vow 2 years ago never to purchase another samsung phone again. They should stick to Televisions, they seem to be good at that.

Windows Mobile is far too troublesome. I constantly had to fix some bug or issue at least once a day with my WM device. The time I've saved with this Pearl is fantastic. Yes, I will give you that 3rd party software for WM is everywhere, and I sure do miss my iGuidance, but OS stability, features, design, and durability are of far more importance to me.

To each his own.

Went home on lunchtime and grabbed the new pearl. Man it is small!!!!!!!!!! I love the form factor compared to the 7130c I was using. The new desktop software with the handheld switch worked flawlessly putting all of my contacts and settings onto the pearl. So far, so good!

Anyone having trouble with the back battery cover on the PEARL? It seems to slip off pretty easy.

None at all, but I've seen some very impressive covers out there that will solve your problem. They're thin, and almost unnoticeable. I'm considering purchasing one to protect the phone if I drop it.

With this case on, I'm fairly certain the back cover can't come off.

The 8100 should be a big hit for Cingular. I personally think it's one of the best devices they've offered in a while

I had an unlocked Pearl for a few days (I borrowed my friends) and the size is tiny. If you
use the phone for the internet, you need to draw the line somewhere in screen size. I did like the size, I did think it was very light weight and I disliked the pearl navigation - but thats just my opinion. I am sure many will love the phone. I left the Nokia e62 for the Blackjack because I like Windows phones personally.

I will never talk badly about a phone because some will hate it and others will love it, no phone is perfect as if they were, we would all have it.

edit: I live in NYC / Long Island and have 3G 90% of the time so I enjoy 3G service. I could understand if you didnt, but eventually you will get it and want it.

My local Cingular store got 6 Pearl's delivered at 5:30 pm last night. I went in around 6:30 to pick mine up. We got it all set up, and then they told me they don't accept checks. So I went in with my dad around 9:30 this morning to pick it up.

I'm liking it. It's been easier to acclimate to than my friends 8700c. The keys appear that they might be kind of squishy, but they are more solid than they appear. Pretty easy to use, once you spend a little bit of time on it. I'm still getting use to the SureType, though. I'm more use to the multi-tap typing, which I am pretty quick at. I'll give the SureType about a week, if I'm still struggling I'll just set it to multi-tap.

No, I don't have a credit card. If I'd paid with cash it would have been an extra $25, too. If the Cingular store accepted checks I would have picked up the phone last night on my way home from work. Last time I upgraded I paid using a check, but that was at a Cingular kiosk at the mall 2 years ago.

This just means that I'm going to have to write my mom a check since she's the one who pays the credit card bills.

My argument more has to do with what the device is truly designed to do, and that is be an efficient PIM OTA sync device. The blackberry is only a PIM OTA sync device when used with a BES which IMO is ridiculously expensive. If you can get away with a just having MS Exchange 2003 SP2 or 2007 and the devices then why go through the hassle of having the middleware. On the other hand, if you are a light email user, who doesn't need access to multiple email folders and doesn't care about over-the-air (OTA) PIM (personal information management) synchronization, then I can understand how the BB could be a good fit. The blackberry connect feature makes setup extremely easy for the novice user as well as saves battery life over a WM5 phone that is setup for POP/IMAP and polls the server every 15 minutes. The point that I was trying to make is more than anything that I think there is going to be a role reversal. BB once used to own solely the enterprise market, with the fact that it could do Push PIM OTA, but now that the middleware isn't needed to complete this with Exchange, IT can just cut the BB's out and use just microsoft stuff for an average savings of $50 per employee. BB is now looking more and more like a consumer oriented solution unless they start giving away BES for free. Giving away BES for free IMO will be the last thing that RIM will do to save themselves once MS pushes hard enough.
