Palm Inc. "buys back" Palm OS Garnet!....?

I do not like to repeat news but I think this follows a lot of the rumors and comments made from Palm Inc. Today PalmSource (ACCESS woops) announced the licensing of the Palm OS Garnet source code to Palm Inc.

If you read the Q&A about this agreement, all Palm Inc. has to do is provide back-combat of some kind with current 68k Palm OS apps. So now Palm Inc. can update the Palm OS with HSDPA, 128MB+ memory, WIFI, multi-tasking, etc. Before this license, Palm Inc. relied on ACCESS to build the features in, which basically resulted in 3 years without a brand new GSM Treo and no WIFI or HSDPA built in.

I think this is Palm taking back the Palm OS! So since Palm basically bought the Palm OS back to use, it is not dead at all, what do you guys and girls wanna see as main new features???

Garnet IS Dead as it cannot support 3G. That is what the OS 6.0 Cobalt was supposed to be for BUT it didnt offer much.

> I cant see Palm Inc hanging on to the Palm OS for too long without the Linux OS Core; whenever that debuts.

I started this topic in the VZW PDA's forum as well. Engadget has a story on it going too.

It seems both good and bad. As the article states, this news means at best a delay in the ALP OS, yet there is a silver lining. It allows for more frequent firmware upgrades (when necessary) in the near term, and also allows for forward compatibility.

Quote:
For better or for worse, we're about full-circle with Garnet now: Palm just forked over $44 million to ACCESS for a perpetual, non-exclusive license to the Garnet source code, granting Palm "the right to use Palm OS Garnet in whole or in part in any product from Palm and together with any other system technologies," along with the welcome ability to modify underlying Garnet source code.

Not a clue as to whether this is just to have better control over OS updates, or whether we may ever see Wi-Fi on our PalmOS based Treos.

It would be nice if both happened, but there is no way of telling for now.

Well if Palm can build the next "Palm OS" that allows 3G, etc. they have this layer of Garnet available to work current apps.

Also if Palm has the capability of redoing the core of Palm OS Garnet to support 3G, why won't they? I think Palm will advance the Palm OS Garnet operating system and name it Palm OS 5.5.
