BlackJack users.. problems?

Lets hear it. What kind of problems have you had? Do you like the phone?

Posted by: AbFab2theMax

great machine...crappy OS. takes a lot of customization. if you're into spending a lot of time on that, it's a great phone. i don't have the time. the pearl works great out of the box, and it does everything i want.

Posted by: 18t

what kind of customization?

is the battery life as bad as everyone makes it out to be?

Posted by: spartanrob

I disagree, you only need to customize it if you choose. It works great right out of the box. My battery life seems to be getting better. I'm hoping that means that my 3G coverage is improving. I have done my fair share of customizations, but I do that with any device.

I have had no problems...until today. When I went to sync it, my time changed to Beijing time. It jacked up all my appt's, times, etc. I finally got it back to normal after a few soft resets and changing the phones date/time options. I changed it from update "automatically on" to "off". That seemed to solve the problem. Anyone else have this issue or know the cause? Any help would be appreciated.

I love this phone. Coming from a Motorola V551, so this is quite a leap.

Pros:

- Great form factor. Very thin, slides in and out of my pocket with ease.
- Is a Phone first, which is what I wanted, then a PDA.
- Amazing screen. 320x240 works for me, but is not as big as the 8525's.
- QWERTY. 'Nuff said. I have used SureType on the Pearl and it works, just not for me. Some people prefer it to a QWERTY, but even after a week it takes me forever to type on those things. I can get so much done with the QWERTY.
- Runs WM5 SPE, which means that 3rd party software works on the phone.
- Quick, responsive and (knock-on-wood) yet to give me any major problems.
- Is fully functional with one hand. This comes in handy while driving. Scroll wheel works great for this.
- I dig the speaker phone. Works well and the people I have talked to didn't realize I was using it. Cool!
- 3G phone (yay!)
- My phone calls are clear and sound good. I get very good reception too.

Cons:

- BIGGEST FLAW TO ME: The lack of a fix to the Gmail/Java problem. Some people here have made a fix (and major kudos to them!!!), but I want to see Cingular/Samsung (or whoever is at fault) step up to the plate and fix this issue.
- Some people (especially those in 3G areas) experience dreadful battery life. I am not in a 3G area, and with average use of internet, texts and calls I average about 3 days of battery. Not bad. When I was in a 3G area, I got a full day.
- Micro-SD slot. So far, I got my damn card stuck in there (but got it out with the help of fellow posters here, thanks!!). It is a wacky fit.
- Not a clamshell. Subjective, I know, but all I ever used were clamshells before this phone and it took a week of getting used to. FYI the Keylock feature works great for me, although many people do not like the 3 button unlock system.
- The back of the phone is not flush, and there is a small hump in which the camera sticks out of the back. It isn't obtrusive, but is a minor flaw.
- No ringer is loud enough for me. I have tried them all, but if I am driving blasting my Sirius, I can miss calls. (Note - with my Bluetooth headset on, I can hear the beep in my ear, so that works.

Overall, I can't say enough about how much I like this phone. Really impressed me. I was planning on using the Cingular 30-day trial period and returning it, but I decided within a week that it wasn't going back. It just fits all my current needs and flat out works. I am not much of a multimedia person with this (ie. music/photos), I just wanted a phone/PDA/text messenger and internet machine that worked well, and for me the Blackjack fit the bill.

The Cons were not enough to make me look elsewhere. The fact that it is so thin that I don't even notice it in my pocket is outrageous.

Hope this helps and good luck with the phone you get. While it works for me it isn't for every user.

I like the phone a lot. Former Palm user (Palm II, i705, treo 600 and 650), so I am still getting used to windows mobile. It does take some work to get more complicated things (activesync with exchange server), but with the help of IT it wasn't too bad. As for the battery, I have not had any problem. Eg.- took it off the charger at 8:00 this morning, it is 2:30 now and still reading full. Admittedly, I've only sent and received a couple emails, but I am running activesync with push on. Doesn't seem near as buggy as the Palms, but then again I haven't had a chance to fill it up with a bunch of junk yet.
I have a coworker with an 8125 (whatever they call the tmobile version). While, as he runs ppc, he has a touch screen that is bigger and (I think) can edit documents, this thing does everything I want and is nice and small.

Don't listen to this guy. In another thread he asked if the blackjack had WM5 or WM for PPC. Said he owned one but he didn't even know what OS was on it.

Interesting, this is precisely a big plus for me. The lump of the camera makes it easier for me to hold this thing in my hand. I can press my index finger against it and its a nice fit. I think that if it was totally flat it would feel awkward.

well i bought it. i like it so far. here is a question i have. lets say i am on some website. what button do i push to exit the browser? it seems like whatever i do when i start up the internet again its where i left off. also if i am streaming video and i leave the browser the audio continues.

also, i put a 7mb video clip on it to test it out. Its not very smooth. every few frames it pauses for a sec. is that cause of memory or because its just too slow?

Posted by: plz_kill_me

Wirelessly posted (blackjack: SAMSUNG-SGH-I607/I607FG1 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; Smartphone; 320x240) UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

Only issue that I really have with this device is the default java machine. The j9 fix suggested in a thread on this forum is far from a suitable soloution.

battery life is good by my standards. (that's with moderate use.)

OS is far from "crappy." (what adult uses that term anyway?)

IE works almost flawlessly on this device.

Samsung did good.

thats because you probably didnt encode it to fit the settings. there is no exit button, it just runs in the back round yo can either hold down the home key intill you task manger comes up and stop it there or hold down the jog wheel

I love mine too. Battery life seems comparable to my RAZR.

Posted by: Lataters

when i set images as backgrounds on my bj, they turn out terrible. they look distorted and fuzzy. however when i view them as documents, their fine. any suggestions; maybe formating problems...?

Posted by: torifile

Ordinarily, I like my new phones less and less as the luster wears off. But so far I've grown to like this one more with the exception of the bad battery life. One day and it's done.

Really? Have you tried using xml? Thats works perfectly for me.

I love this phone. I was in love with my 8125, but I hated the size so I went to the Nokia e62 - but I missed Windows. Then I had an unlocked Pearl and I thought the screen was too small and it still didnt have WM5. Now I have the BJ & I am happy with the size and windows.

Like I say in every thread, no phone is perfect. The BJ has its flaws, but I feel that if you like WM5, 3G and thin phones - then it is perfect for you.

I customized the home screen and I am very happy. I am in a 3G area 90% of the time, so I dont miss WiFi. They gave me an extra battery if I am away from my charger for a long time. People ***** about the battery life but I didnt think my 8125 was so great either.

Posted by: Lataters

(now this...) starting today, when i set the color scheme as "guava bubbles" it wont load unless the background image is set to default. otherwise a message on my homescreen appears and reads, "The layout you gave selected cannot be loaded. Please select a different layout using the Home Screen item in Settings." Can someone help!

could you tell me how, or direct me to where i can find that information

Posted by: jrwoods

1) Battery life
2) Bluetooth - can't sync to Outlook via bluetooth nor will it recognize my various headsets unless I go in and manually change it via the bluetooth settings
3) Java. Why can't they just leave a toggle button that allows for you to ask the first time and not have to keep hitting allow for anytime you use a Jave app.
4) I know it is against the Cingular policy, but they should post a list of alternative DNS servers to allow for faster internet and email experiences.

i just didn't know enough about WM operating systems. didn't know the difference between WM5 and WM5 smartphone because this is the first time i've used WM5. if you're comfortable with the OS, go with it. like i said, great piece of machinery, wrt buttons, screen, scroll wheel, etc. i'm just not a fan of the OS. i prefer the ease of the bberry.

I liked it until I started using it. I want true push mail (e.g. Blackberry), not forwarding (mail2web) or pull mail (XpressMail). I think I'm returning it tomorrow.

Posted by: SkaWes

I haven't had any problems so far, and I find the battery life to be fine. (I used it a lot today, made a few very short calls, and spent a hour or so browsing the internet on the 3G network, checked and sent a few emails, and the battery only went down 30%

Exactly. I have had the phone for almost a month now (Wow, its been that long huh? Got it on Nov 16th) and now that I dont need to nitpick every little feature I find the battery lasts a lot longer.

Update: It's now "tomorrow." I think I'm going to keep the device for a week and then made a decision. I do like everything else about the phone: size, design/look, feel/build quality, call quality, etc. I am just a recovering crackberry addict, who needs some "psycho-technology" detox.

i agree. the phone would be pretty much perfect for me if it had true push mail. but of course no phone is perfect. I think they do it on purpose. jerks

...same for me, but I'll give it a week (more) to see what I can and cannot deal/live with.

My push e-mail is instantaneous. I get my messages within seconds of them being sent (I tested it with a friend sending from her treo).

This IS true push mail (DirectPush via Exchange Server) if you use the mail2web address or another Exchange server. It is only forwarded if you are using other addresses and forwarding them to your mail2web address or other Exchange server. Even then it only adds a few seconds more to the process unless your e-mail service provider is slow in forwarding. Besides, even if it takes a full minute, does it really matter? Maybe it's just that my e-mails are not of national security importance. If yours are, maybe a few extra seconds DO matter.

I just picked mine up on Saturday...loving it..took me a little
time to figure out how to run this because I have had nothing
but Nokia's.But within a day or so messing around with it.

I was able to change my background image to~HBO's Entourage "Turtle"
Picked up three ringtones...watched a CNN stream, one hideous music
video, clip from HBO and something on the Cartoon Network.

Battery just dropped by one bar after all of this................

So,for the past 48 hours I'm impressed but I wish there was more accessories
for the Blackjack. The pouch they sell at Cingular is terrible.I ended up
getting a Bodyglove one that is used for a device with similiar dimensions.

I really like the clear window on the bodyglove so I can see the screen,
without taking the phone out of the pouch.I had to turn the phone upside down in order to do this, since the phone it was designed for must be shorter
but the same slim built as the Blackjack.

Posted by: 18t

i just bought a pouch from samsungs website. it works perfect for me. http://www.samsungwireless.com/usa2...0115-Hi-Res.gif

i bought a car charger. must have if you use the phone alot.
