what "middle piece" are you referring to? and what is that a picture of in the background there?

and why do people keep calling it acid tape? ........its not tape and its not acid......just wondering how that term came about.

nice phone though.......internal antenna?

haha, acetate=acid tape? They do sound pretty alike
I like the antennaless look though

Well every time i talk to my cousin thats how it sounds, but if its some thing different that its called then i cant blam her for having the Fobish actsent, and yes the middle piece is what i was referring too. the thing that is behind the cell phone is a hugh pikachu that i have near my computer.

Posted by: Dr. Trigsman

I think he might be referring to the rear housing?! Remember on the 5190s it's actually a "middle" piece. I am still looking for a clear "middle" for my 3390.
That is the first antennaless 5190 I have seen. hella tight in my opinion.

Posted by: eg0trip

ahh ok, i see what your talking about for the middle piece.

and its not just you, i've seen several people on here and heard alot of people say "acid tape"...oh well, who cares what its called as long as it looks good, right?

I will agree on that 56K beware... Thank god for cable!
I think if you took the mashi maro thing off and changed the antenna sticker to something different, it wouldn't be so girly.... Its ok!... Women will make you do crazy things!

Posted by: DixieFlatline

It is a little girly but not bad. I agree with him, a few changes and it won't look so girly. I like the inverted screen and you have a nice cover.

Is it hard to change the case like that? Isn't the 3360 a good size smaller than the 8310? And if so, is there a lot of empty room up near the earpiece? it looks nice and I was just wondering how you did it and what it was like. The green does look very good, too.

actually the 8310 is quite a bit smaller than the 3360. but the faceplate is just an 8310 style faceplate for the 3360. so the size of the faceplate/phone doesn't change, just the style.

if the link doesn't work the site is www.e-soughtafter.com
look under the Nokia 3390 section and they're on pages 8 & 9. didn't see a clear one though.

TamperTesting, you and me both. Bought a 3390 when it first came out and went straight to Pacific right away for a full modding job right out of the box Lol. For some reason I can't stand stock green LEDs and the like. But now, I think I'm starting to outgrow it...

warranty is no problem i dun think..when u change ur leds save the green one if u didn';t just get a new set they are cheap..if nokia said u open the phone before blame it on ur service provider

-Ultra blue backlight LEDs
-Black jeweled keys
-1250mAh Li-Polymer battery
-Antenna Booster
-Firmware version 2.06 (picture message capable)

i do have a 8390 style faceplate but i like to use the OEM one more

the car is a s2000 but i have many of those background

but i havent use this phone is months

Posted by: akira

Here's mine:

It's a Nokia 8290 with the aluminum 8890 mod. I have blue LED's installed, but you can't see them (until I learn how to use my digital camera a bit better). I also have an antenna booster in there (yes, I know, but hey... it was free). Right now my only problem is that the mod doesn't allow me to see my keypad lights (and thus the numbers in the dark).

Posted by: FrOsTi3v0

wow thats looks almost exactly like a 8890. You even have the Nokia logo on top of the screen. The only thats missing is the external antenna.

Posted by: FrOsTi3v0

also, the middle column buttons are slightly off alignment with the others.

Posted by: Plasma-Sword

Yeah, I have to say that is one of the best (if not the best) looking conversions I've seen for the 8890. Props to you there.

Posted by: TamperTesting

I like the 8890 Conversions alot, they work pretty darned nice if you put some effort and time into the install!

I had one on my 8290, then I sold it to my friend, I needed the cash!

Posted by: akira

Alright, here goes again. I just took another picture (after changing some settings on my digital camera). I think this one really shows it off.

Right now I'm having trouble with the main board; when I squeeze the phone (at the center, near the up/down buttons), the keypad LED's light up. I squeeze it again, and they may or may not go off. Anyone have any solutions?

Posted by: AsTrObOy

I had that problem with my 8290 too. I think it's because the LEDs are sucking too much power to the main board. Don't quote me on this, but I've had the same problem and nothing I nor the repair shops I brought it to would fix it. Luckily it's only intermittent. You should put some white out on the sides of the ase so the lights don't shine out on the sides. Nice modd though

Posted by: akira

Whiteout! That's a great idea. Thanks AsTrObOy!

Posted by: FrOsTi3v0

i thought u had a alum. mod, how does the light shine through it?

Posted by: AsTrObOy

Actually, another thing you can try is duct tape, only takes 1 strip to cover the light out pretty well, only catch is that you have to cut it properly and make sure it fits. I think it'll take about 5 coats of whiteout compard to one strip of duct tape. Happy modding

Posted by: akira

That's a good question: how *does* light shine through it? I think the sides of the LCD area might be plastic. But the slide, and battery cover are certainly aluminum. As for the duct tape, I have electrical tape that I think might work. Thanks for the suggestions.

Posted by: The Rex

black nailpolish is probably the best solution to prevent the light s from showing on the outside

i put white out and it works..but no that great..it starts cracking...i never tried black nail polish...but would that make a white faceplate look dull with black nail polish under it?

Posted by: parapara

what about white nailpolish?

and also, wouldn't the lights show the siluette (?spelling?) of the nailpolish or tape, since the lights are so bright??

i had one of them cheapie plastic spring-loaded sliding faces for my 8260, and i applied black nailpolish to the entire interior area to eliminate the problem with the lights shining through. i had to apply like three coats for the most consistent blockage of the light--didn't really mind cuz i really have no purpose for the nailpolish so i figured i'd use as much as i could. looked pretty fly until the slide broke apart like the next day

u want to know y??
cause the leds on the 8290 can't touch the metal frame, or else it will cut off the curcit. !
i just know that yesterday !!
hahhaa,

i think the guy that did u leds did i poor job !!

Posted by: AsTrObOy

Are you sure? I've brought my phone in to 2 repair shops and both re-did the whole setup for me and yet I still have that issue... Don't tell me 3 separate modd shops cannot do a good job at installing LEDs on an 8290. Lol..

Posted by: jerjer

hey, y do i want to lie to u?
that's the truth !! maybe the did a good job, but the solder material is still touching the metal peice with out urself noticing it !!

it's possible !!!

Posted by: AsTrObOy

It's not whether or not you'd lie to me, just that this might not apply to me. After 3 times of complete total reinstallation of all 12 LEDs and they still can't get it right that's gotta be really sad then.

Posted by: jerjer

no, it's the solder materials !!
if they put on too much, everytime u put on new leds, it will still touch the metal frame i suppose !!

just my opinion, dones't mean it has to be true, right>??

Posted by: akira

I took my mod apart again (see my post above... the 8890 mod). For the life of me, I can't see the solder points on the board for the LED's. I've never replaced cellular LEDs before (I've done other LED's, like for computer parts). It sounds like you have the right idea about shorting the circuit, but I can't tell where. I've noticed that the brightness caused by the short is brighter than the usual brightness of the LED's, so I think that wherever it's happening, the short is cutting out a resistor or two. Too much voltage! If only I had a schematic or circuit diagram... or maybe if I simply stabilize the board on the frame.

Posted by: jerjer

wow, u know alot of stuff about electronic, i barely understand a word !!
hehe !!

Posted by: akira

I just *think* I know a lot about electronics. But anyway, re-seating the board seems to have stopped the shorts for now. But I guess I can never take my mod apart ever again, or risk shorting it.

Posted by: blakedecker66

hey some of these phones look so bad. theyre like swap meet specials. my cousin has a multicolor flashing keypad, and some gay aftermarket dragon faceplate. and his lifetime is under an hour after a month of use. i mean this kid got his phone, just so he could put the gayest, weridest stuff on it. my mods are gonna nice and simple. 3360 with a silver or black face and white or blue leds. no rainbow keys or flashing keychains.

Posted by: FrOsTi3v0

you cant say other people's mods are "gay." Some people might think your mods are "gay." It's their opinion of a cool phone not yours. But I somewhat agree because, the majority of people who like rainbow keypads and flashing keychains are girls.

Here my 3390 Gold slightly modded,

So far all i've done was invert the screen (it looks very dark) and change the face to a poor 8890 look-a-like (not even alluminum, plastic).

Next step is to change the LED's to either Bright Green (just to be different) or blue/white combination. and a flashing battery (and a better faceplate ^_^)

i thought u just un-screw the screw with a T6 and put the housing on and scerw the screw back....................
i could be wrong
cuz i haven't try openin my 8290.

Posted by: Nokarola

It's kinda hard, i haven't done the full housing kit for a 8290. but i changed the face for my freinds 8260 is was pretty easy and simple.

The full Housing for the 8290 is kinda simple, you just have to remember were the peice comes from before you transfer them.
and make sure it's a good fit/kit.

inverting the screen is pretty easy but it looks *****t# once your done with it. and you need extra polarized film. go to the nokia modding section of the forum and there is alot of information about inverting your screen. i did it to my 5190 and i can tell ya you need bright leds to see the letters on a inverted screen!

Yep I bought these green leds, the difference in these and the oem are the brightness and the actual greeness. These leds are far brighter and greener, thats why i bought it

I just followed the instructions that Thorin posted (here http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...&threadid=16692 ) the only thing you need is polorized Film, Torx #6 screw driver and a razor blade.

Take the faceplates off; pry the plastic tabs holding the metal frame holding down the LCD; remove the LCD; and Peel the Film Behind the screen; (I peeled off 2 films one with a white backing, and another with clear backing) clean the LCD; you might want to put the LCD back in the phone and test the Polorized film, to see what shade you want the screen to look, Cut the film to size, put it behind the screen and seal everything back.

Just take your time you don't want to break your LCD. and the effects would be better if you have the LEDs modded bright, because during the day i have trouble looking at the LCD.

*side note* i broke the LCD too aint that a

Posted by: akira

If you wanna try inverting something less expensive first, try inverting your calculator screen. I think it works pretty much the same way with a simple pocket calculator. You can even get fancy and invert part of the screen (to "hilight" your hundred's digit, or something). I've never tried it, but the principle seems to be the same.

Yeah, green LEDs are awesome man. I used to have a green screen and a white keypad on my other 3360 before I traded it in for some parts for my 3390, which is gone now also.

You're the first person I've met that has (or had) green lights on their phone other than myself.

Hey how do you guys make the pictures under 50kb? I did that once with a picture of my 3390 that I posted. Since then, I can't figure out how to make the file size smaller. I'd appreciate it if someone could point me to some sort of FAQ. I tried searching around and asking some tech-savvy friends, but they didn't know.

BTW, I sold that 3390 but bought another one and put the same LEDs in LOL... I also put in an all blue flashing keypad. My relative is using that phone, so I'll have to wait to take a picture. The 3390 I'm using now has the same flashing keypad...and an orange flashing battery - but same boring OEM LEDs. I'm deciding if I want to put LEDs on my 8290. Just paid $30 to put LEDs on my 3390...not sure if I wanna waste another 30 bucks

I don't know if it's my camera (a 1.3mp Olympus Brio D-150) or what, but when I take pics of my 3390 w/ the LEDs on it looks dim. It's probably just because my camera is adjusting to the brightness...

Posted by: c/m

stop blaming on ur camera..........maybe it's ur phone........
real things always get shown in cameras........hahahaha....
maybe ur phone doesn't have bright led....lol.........jkjk
hope you don't mind....hahahah

Posted by: monmon

Posted by: parapara

I liked your 8250 style better...
Maybe you should have got a different keypad, the blue is off...

Posted by: RyanM

I think it looks cool!

i already ordered the battery door and slim battery..still deciding on what antenna i want..and where to install the blue keypad LEDs

Posted by: raver0600

My Nokia 8260:

Clear Faceplate
Clear On/Off Button
Clear Antenna Cover
Clear Battery Cover
Crystal Keypad
Flashing Sticker

Posted by: raver0600

This is the back of my 8260:

The sticker is actually Red, Blue, and Green but the camera doesnt show that

Posted by: Scott

cool phone

Posted by: raver0600

thanks =P..but im still not done modding it... i still need the Inverted LCD Screen ($25.00) and the White LED's ($2.50 per 2)
..I have 2 White LED's but i'd rather let an experienced solderer do the job =P

Posted by: Scott

I can get RED led's If your intrested but I can't install them

Posted by: raver0600

There actually is a discount website with many aftermarket new products for your phone. I got my faceplate+antenna cover+clear on/off button for $4.99 and my battery cover for $2.99. I got my crystal keypad for $2.99 and the red/blue/green sticker for $4.25. It was really cheap, but you do have to wait a week for it to be delivered =0. The LEDs were $2.50/ pack of 2

Posted by: Scott

oh ok what's the site ?

Posted by: raver0600

http://www.cellphoneshop.net/ <- its got everything you need (but it doesnt have my inverted LCD screen =P)

I love those things!!
I should definatly get a new one!

Posted by: parapara

My new cell!...
Nothing special yet, but I felt like taking a pic just for the hell of it...
Up coming mods:

1) Black manual slide, inverted LCD, black keys
2) Frosty clear faceplate, clear battery cover, clear keypad, white battery...

Posted by: raver0600

Hey, are those clear keypads any good? Are they the clear poly ones? Those really suck. Where are/did you buy your Inverted LCD Screen? (Besides daydeal/coolbattery) and is it simple to remove the other LCD screen to replace it?

Actually I live in Toronto, so I don't need to go online to get accessories, I can just go to Markham for all my needs!
I haven't done the mods yet since I'm so poor now, but when I have cash those are the two that I want to do. And yes I want the poly(?) ones (You mean the cheap ones that come with 8260 faceplates, right?). I like them for some reason? But from what I can see I think inverting this phones screen will be harder to do compared to a 82XX phone. The LCD is held inside an internal housing unlike the 8260 where its just a board...

Posted by: t2k3

um the 8250's original style cover will work on the 8290, the keypad inside is diff but if u cut the extra rubber on the right it will fit and work fine. it looks hot.

Posted by: jazzimat

Parapara,

I love your faceplate. Purple is my favorite color. May I ask where you purchased it from?

Thanks,
Matti
