Motorola V550 text message problems

I would be so grateful if someone could give me an idea why my Motorola V550 doesn't receive text messages properly. When I got the phone it was locked to Vodaphone and I unlocked it so that I could use it on Virgin. The logo comes up T Mobile but that's not the problem.
When someone goes to send me a text it comes up on their phone as unable to send - unless I have texted them and they click reply, then I get it. I can't understand why this is as I never had this problem before I got the phone but I have watched someone try to text me today and seen the message for myself.
My friend says her phone thinks my number is overseas and that's why it won't send it.
Or is it to do with the message centre number needing to be changed? Another friend thinks that the message centre number could still be set on Vodaphone and not Virgin. But I cannot find anywhere on the phone where I could change it. It isn't where it was on my old phone that's for sure.
Or could it be because I bought a programme from the internet and unlocked it myself rather than take it in a shop to do?
The phone is brilliant in all other ways so I just can't understand it.
I'm totally at a loss and worried about the texts I am missing because my friends and family can't send them.
Please can anyone help me?

Check your SMS service #, the Voda flex requires you to manually update it. Just look in a friens Virgin phone for the #, and enter it in yours in the msg setup menu.
