Help !!!! 903 keeps freezing.. even did a master reset...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Sorry I need some advice fast, I'm about to go hysterical T__T
I bought a used 903SH from timsta, and when I first encountered freezing, he told me to do a master reset, and I did. It still froze a bit, but went away the next day.
I guess this was a week ago..
Now all of a sudden my phone is freezing on me again.. I had to take the battery out numerous times. I did a master reset again, and even after the reset process finished, when it asked me to input the time&date, it froze again !!!

Is this an internal problem, could be fixed by flashing, or can I fix it myself???

Oddly enough, I just gave my 902 to my sister today and she encountered freezing - something I've never had with that phone, and I used it for a month.

I already emailed timsta about this, but just would like some fast advice from you guys too, since i'm about to go nuts !!

also, tim told me NOT to do power+# the first time i had this problem.. so i'm scared to touch that ><<<<<

Hi,

I have that very same problem with my 903! Started a couple of days ago, when the screen just turned black when I wanted to watch a video. Tried couple of times, wouldn't show me any video, just a black screen. But I was still able to go back to idle screen. Unfortunately a few minutes later the screen freezes and I had to take ou the battery. Now I can start the phone, and it will work for about 5-10 sec and then the screen would freeze and I would have to take out the battery again...
Any help would be welcome!

this freezing issue is strange. i honestly dont know why it would do that unless it has some kind of water damage or hardware damage. its possible something is overheating, but its highly unlikely.

can i ask how big of a miniSD you are using? what service provider are you on? how old is your sim card?

by the way, timsta is on holiday until near the end of the month, so be patient and get your actual digital camera ready for all the xmas pics you want to take.

Posted by: himeko

Hey Kev, thanks for replying !!
I thought the freezing issue was common? When I searched up freezing, a few people have mentioned freezing problems on the 903, and some members have recommended 1. reflashing 2. master reset phone. then. refomrat the card. reload the card. see what happens-> (tim's advice to a guy who had freezing+then phone crashing prob) 3. power+# 4. switching languages to the opposite language, then back to english again (tried this, didn't work)

I'm completely lost on who's advice to follow.. I want to try power+# but at the same time, when I first told Tim about the freezing, he told me NOT to to power+#

I'm using a brand new Sandisk 1GB miniSD, I'm on Fido service, and my sim card is 2 months old (used to use it with my 902sh)

When my phone freezes up (i press buttons but it doesn't respond), I have to take the battery out+in, and eventually will freeze again at some point.

Is there anything you can recommend me to do Kev??
Would it help any to master reset again, then add on the reformat+reload the card process?
Any help would be MUCH appreciated, thanks a lot !!!!!

PS would this have anything to do with the fact that i sometimes take out the memory card while the phone is still on? the memory card icon ISNT in use/blinking, but sometimes I take it out/put it back in without turning the phone off, but of course, not while the phone is accessing/reading the memory card.. but Al posted that he does this too, so maybe this isn't the source of the problem... just thought it's worth mentioning

Posted by: himeko

edit: scratch that master reset + reformat+ reload the card process.. i just did it, and after a while, froze again on me T________T
somebody please tell me this is a super minor problem that can be easily fixed !! i'm trying to study for final exams but going crazy over my phone in the wee hours in the morning... this can't be healthy =P

update on the situation:

after doing the master reset+reformat+reload card process yesterday,
today when i wokeup, my phone didn't freeze at all on me today, despite the fact that it froze again yesterday right after i went through this process, as explained in my last post

so since i reformated the card (data in SDcard erased), i took it out of my phone, and started uploading pics/music back into it. when i loaded the memory card back into my phone, and was scrolling through the pics from the SD card, it froze on me.
took out the battery, scrolled through pics from the SD card again, froze on me again..

just a coincidence or is the freeze associated with the memory card itself??

now i took out the memory card altogether, and seeing how my phone reacts for the next couple days... if it doesn't freeze on me, i'll try loading in my memory card afterwards and see if it acts up again..

But would it be weird if it was because of my SDcard? It is brand new, bought just for this phone.. and I'm pretty sure there is no "wrong way" to upload data other than copy/paste in the folder via the card reader.. and i always safely disconnect the card reader when i'm done uploading from my computer; i don't just yank it out of the usb drive..

well, from what i've heard 903 are fussy with memory cards but sandisk should be fine... maybe you just got a bad egg and your 903 doesn't like it. I remember my old lexar card reader for the life of me wouldn't read Kingston cards.

Also.. if your phone isn't freezing for the next few days.. if it were me I wouldnt' go and stick the mem card back in, because pulling the battery out while the phone is on is never good.. thats like.. pulling the plug on ur comp.. might be ok a few times.. but all it takes it once to kill everything.

Posted by: himeko

Thanks for the reply marco!
Do you think I should buy a different brand of memory card, like Kingston and give it a try?

Yeah, now that I think about it, I guess pulling the battery out won't do the phone much good.. erkk =/

Hi everybody!

Maybe the freezing is caused by the memory card! Because I'm using a Sandisk 1GB memory card as well (like 10 months old or so, always used the way it should) just like Himeko!!

So Himeko: You did a master reset and reformated the card and now it's working fine? Are you able to run all the applications? And are you able to work with the sandisk 1GB card again or do you leave it out now to avoid possible freezing??

Any help is much appreciated! If Himeko can confirm the master reset + reformat is a good idea then I will try that!

Ps: How do I do a master reset?
For the reformat I just put it in a card reader and the reformat on my pc I suppose?
(sorry I'm not the expert on this subject)

Thanks for helping me out guys! I was really freaking out my beloved sharp was failing on me!

Greets, Dimitri.

the 903 is only officially supporting up to like 256mb. there is not alot of ram and processor speed on the 903 which is why larger cards could cause it to freeze.

in any case, if your fone keeps freezing, a reflash might help; and a 512mb minisd might be a bit easier on the phone (especially if you have lots of data on it).

master reset:

from main wallpaper press MENU (middle button), #, up

if you have japanese firmware press MENU, NO, #, up (haha)

your security code should be 9999 if you haven't changed it.

Posted by: himeko

Thanks Kev, for letting me know that 903 officially supports 256mb.. that might explain it.. perhaps i got the weaker phone out of the batch i guess~

I wonder if my phone can handle 512MB =[ don't know which to try.. do they even make 256MB memory cards anymore?? guess i'll find out~
Just in time too, because I was going to head out to best buy tomorrow to exchange my memory card!! hopefully things will go good after that!
** i envy you 903'ers with a 1GB card haha, just makes things more convienent!

Dimi, I understand 100% how you feel that your beloved sharp was failing on you! I hope we can help each other out with our same situation!

I did a master reset + reformat card a couple days ago, and it still froze on me that same night, but when i wokeup the next morning it was working fine again. But because reformating your card would erase all the data in it, I uploaded my pics+songs back on the card, popped it back in my 903, and froze again on me when i was viewing items from my card.. so I don't think reformating the card fixes the problem (for me anyways, you can try it).

The day before, I took my SD card out completely, and my phone hasn't freezed on me at all.. =)
So I will update on the situation once I get a smaller size SD card instead. Let me know how your 903 is doing too!

lol you have to be the most polite questionner on this forum haha, most ppl just ask questions, get a response and dissapear. I hope that your problem gets fixed!

Hi,

Thanks for reply's. I'm trying to do a master reset now, but I haven't managed to complete one so far. I start up my phone, enter pin, await the wallpaper screen, then quickly press menu button, #, up, select "reset all", select "yes" 2x times and then it shows a waiting screen "please wait ..." but after a couple of seconds the phone freezes! So it doesn't have enhough time to complete the reset I suppose!

Himeko; How were you able to complete the master reset before the phone freezes?!

I tried 2 times now and I froze 2 times on me, so I had to remove the battery 2 times I really want to avoid this!

PS: Of course I left the memory card out of my phone.

I guess it looks like reflashing is needed here? (Not so pleased with that solution as I heard it is possible this destroyes the phone and I've never done it before) Hopefully you guys have a solution for me?

Greets, Dimitri.

edit: update:
just bought a brand new kingston 512sd card today.. popped it in my phone.. froze on me 4 hrs later =___= my problem is def. related to the memory card~ i didn't even upload any data on the memory card yet either! just put it in the phone and reformated the card (thinking that doing this would solve the problem =p)
guess nothing to do but wait till Tim gets back.. just praying it's not a hardware problem

lol i suppose you are referring to me
well i'm not going to disappear anytime soon because the problem isn't fixed yet hahah.. in real life i'm more like 'answer my effing question now!!'
thanks, i hope to find the solution to my problem soon =]

Dimi- before, my phone only froze at random times; i was always successful at doing master reset without having it freeze on me then..
since your phone freezes before you can get the reset process finished.. i think it would be best in your case to get your phone reflashed. reflashing shouldn't harm your phone if done by a professional who knows what he/she's doing, and we have a few sharp experts here on the forums Unless if you can find anyone local in your area to do the reflash, I would recommend sending your phone to Canada to get it fixed by these guys, they're great!

Posted by: Dimi -- Belgium

Ok, I would like to try that reflashing. But of course I do not know any persons who can do that professionally. Could you please give me some names of the people that can this in a safe way.

Also what garantuee do I have when I sent my phone to, let's say Canada I will actually get it back (not to mentioned the problem being fixed)...

haha i had the same problem...

get this: it started freezing up right after i connected via bluetooth with someone's RAZR. it raped my phone or something. damn motorolas.

the problem was fixed by a reflash

when doing a master reset, the phone will freeze but then it will turn off in a few seconds. if you have testmode unlock on your phone, i dont think a master reset is recommended.

Hi,

Not having found anyone around willing to reflash my sharp 903 I'm thinking of sending the phone to a sharp expert as you recommended.
So who do I best talk to? Bearing in mind that I want 200% garantee that I will get my phone back...

Thanks, Dimitri.

oh. u know what dimi. i know what u're problem is.
Go to display settings and turn video output off... its trying to detect the tv cables that came with the phone.

if its not that.. then i guess try a master reset

i used a sandisk 1gig, NEVER froze on me, and i have the thing filled up to the last mb. use sandisk if not ATP (supposely a better brand). that memory card is now on my n73 and it is working flawlessly. i also use a kingston 2gig with my n73 and it cause lag constantly. sandisk i the way to go, but keep in mind that there is defects in every brand, just sandisk have less

HAHA SERIOUSLY.
I hate motorolas so much, I've had a few and you can beat the life out of them and they'd still work, but somewhere along the line I'll come across some sort of internal MALFUNCTIOOON or defect.

anyone I know who ... actually takes good care of their motorolas have the same sort of problem :/

but back on topic, my phone started to crash and freeze too! but my card is only a 64mb panasonic |:

maybe I'll go for a sandisk~

Posted by: himeko

wow my topic is still alive.. lol
well i stopped using my phone for a short period of time and had to buy a temp replacement phone, so i went on contract and go the LG chocolate [NOTHING like the sharp phone.. once you go sharp.. you can never go back!).
so anyways, it still froze on me sometimes, so i'd stop using it for a week, and come back to it.
now i've come back to it, and it's been a week, and working fine.. i even popped in a kingston 1gb memory card, and my baby is cooperating with me wonderfully
haha no idea why though.. but hope it won't freeze on me again! *cross fingers*

come to think of it, before this whole freezing thing happened.. my friend jacked songs from my 903 with his SE810i via bluetooth... i bet the SE raped my phone as well.. damn sony ericssons.. lol

Posted by: alien8x

What do they call this .... from power off position ...then you hold power button and # button simultaneously. then wait for a white screen it will flash format ....whole process takes about 10 minutes . then restart . it fixes my continueosly restarting problem. I'm not sure if this is safe, but i think its a temporary remedy , until i got the chance to fully flash to other firmware. Just want to know if anybody doing this ...let me know ...hey, no guarantees...just sharing my experience. BTW , the phone still works up to now after doing that.

Posted by: Dimi -- Belgium

Hi,

Just tried to turn on my phone again after leaving it alone for almost a month and it froze on me only 5 secs after startup... Damn!! Hoping it would be fixed like Himeko...

Ok so reflash is definitely needed here.
Which Canadian guy should I contact here for (professionally) reflashing my Sharp 903?

Thanks, Dimitri.
