Star Trek communicator pin, anyone?

I got to thinking the other day about the super-cool Bluespoon Panther I've been using, as well as my friend's Nokia 7210, with a speakerphone similar to those installed on the Nextel phones.

If you combine the microscopic Bluetooth and hardware buttons of the Bluespoon with the speakerphone of the Nokia (how much room can that take up in such a relatively small phone?), wouldn't that essentially be a communicator similar in function (when combined with a reliable Bluetooth phone like the P800) to those on Star Trek TNG? I know it doesn't have the autonomous range of the communicators on TV, which can make point-to-point connections over hundreds or thousands of kilometers, but hey, it's only the beginning of the 21st century...

Great thing is, if you designed it to attach to a shirt, you could hide the majority of the hardware inside the shirt to which it is attached, so that only a small portion of the actual device is observable.

This would solve the only "drawback" of all headsets, even the wireless variety, that you look like a dork if you wear it all the time, but have to fumble to wear it whenever a call comes through. Add a 2.5mm jack for a wired headset to keep the call private.

Jellyguy,

So you think a star trek logo communicator, hooked up to your shirt would make you look like less of a dork than a bluetooth headset.

Hmmmm...

It wouldn't have to LOOK like a Star Trek pin, merely have the same functionality, in a more discreet package. In fact, this would merely be a wearable, miniaturized and more user-friendly version of the functionality available on all Nextel phones.

The "dork" factor I refer to is evident when you converse with someone while walking down the street. You look like you are chatting with your alternate personalities. With this, at least others could tell there is a real person on the other end of said conversation.

And you could take a little more care to phrase your critiques in a nicer, more polite way. On the receiving end of such comments is a real person, not a bunch of zeros and ones. Manners and etiquette do not disappear when you power up your internet browser.

I welcome criticism, but if you are going to attempt to humiliate me, this reduces the quality of these forums and alienates those who might wish to contribute.

Cummon Jelly,

You're taking it too hard. I'm a Trekkie myself.

I apologise if I hurt your feelings.

Ok, I apologize, maybe I've become a bit sensitive lately. It's just that I participate in a number of online forums, and I've seen many of them hijacked by a few who seem to think these forums are their personal stomping grounds and torture chambers.

I'll shut up now, and try to interpret these comments as tongue-in-cheek in the future.

This isn’t a pin... but what do you think?

I really think the next hot thing is going to be an extremely small phone. No features, just a really small device that can be used as a phone period. A totally self contained phone in possibly a (like BT) headset design!

how would you incorporate the sound the communicator makes when you tap on it?

Posted by: Jellyguy

vwvwvw,

Cool to see companies trying out new ideas like this. I'm not sure how loud the speaker is, but if it's anything like a Nextel, this might be an interesting place to start...

oneeyejack,

If it has a speaker loud enough for outdoor conversations (again, the Nextel phones are the perfect example of this), making sounds like that shouldn't be an issue. The Bluespoon itself makes certain sounds through the earpiece when you press certain combinations of the two buttons, as well as when the phone rings.

Great idea to issue a sound confirming that the phone call has been answered, that's something the Bluespoon could use as well! I can never tell whether the sound actually has been transfered to the headset...
