can't send email from Blackjack with Outlook

I can't get Outlook on my Blackjack to send email. I've got it set up so it's fetching mail over IMAP/SSL from my mail server, but no matter what I try, I can't get it to send mail using SMTP on the same server. I always get the same lame error message that basically says that something is wrong, but gives no clue as to what the actual problem is.
The one thing I've been able to get to work is setting up a proxy listening on port 80 (normally HTTP) to my mail host's SMTP server on port 25. I am able to watch all the traffic between the Blackjack and my mail host, and I can see mail going through successfully. But if I configure the outgoing mail server to point to my mail host directly, it doesn't work. There's always a long timeout, then the error message.
I think I have determined that there's some sort of firewalling inside the phone. I have set up simple network daemons on my own machine on ports 25, 80, 587 and 65432. I configure the outgoing mail server as myhost.com:587, for example. I only get a connect from the Blackjack when I configure it to use port 80. The other ports seem to be blocked.
I have a Treo 650 that I used before this, and it worked perfectly with the same mail host, so it seems like a device problem, not a network problem. What gives? Anybody had the same problem?

more info:
from Internet Explorer on Blackjack to:
port 80: connect
port 25: immediate error on Blackjack, no connect
port 587: connect
from Outlook on Blackjack to:
port 80: connect
port 25: no connect, error after ~15 sec.
port 587: no connect, error after ~15 sec.
Very weird. I can't imagine why port 80 works and the other ports, which are the typical SMTP ports, don't.
Has anyone been able to get their Blackjack to send mail from Outlook to an SMTP host that uses SMTP authentication?

just tried setting outgoing mail server to cwmx.com as per another Blackjack thread: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?p=8259464
That didn't work either. I tried unchecking "server requires authentication" and checking "server requires authentication" with a blank username and password. No dice.

Who is your internet service provider? Some service providers have weird things about sending emails via their server if you aren't actually connected to their network while trying to send it. A good example is I have Comcast, when trying to send an Email via their servers from home on a wireless laptop works fine, but whenever you leave the house and go to somewhere that has a wireless network that is on another service, it doesn't want t work. Your ISP might have some specific settings that could fix this problem up.

I have my own domain and have someone hosting my mail for me.
I think the stuff I've posted about which ports work and which don't shows that Outlook won't send mail on ports 25 or 587. It will send mail on port 80, but that's supposed to be for HTTP. It doesn't matter who my ISP is.
I guess my Blackjack is just broken. All SMTP servers run on port 25, and some on port 587 as an alternate to get around cable/DSL firewalls, so if Outlook can't send mail on this port, it can't send mail, period. Maybe it needs another hard reset to wipe all settings -- that'll be twice in the first week!
No one else has had this problem?
Your example about not being able to send mail via Comcast's outgoing SMTP server is because they will only relay mail that comes from an IP on their network. Otherwise, spammers the world over would use their servers to pump out spam.

Do you send/receive via POP3?

Do you have to use outlook? I have a few email accounts on my blackjack and I set them up through XPress Mail (gmail and personal accounts) and they work perfectly.
