Blackjack IMAP Email - Delete on Server

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, but haven't been able to dig it up.

I have a few IMAP4 email accounts setup on my Blackjack. Unfortunately, when I delete emails on my blackjack - not only do they not delete on the server the next time my BJ connects to it, they get downloaded again!

I cannot find a "delete on server when deleting locally" option in the setup, which is what I really need. Either way, they certainly shouldn't be downloaded again.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: Actually, they don't seem to be re-downloading everytime, just occassionally.

Another correction. It does in fact look like it is redownloading each time, as I originally posted. I think it was a few failed connections that made me think otherwise.

I haven't found out how to get this to work either, it seems as they they don't want to "risk" having the phone able to delete emails on either pop3 or on IMAP.

Having the ability to sync with the server via deleting and the like is the whole point of IMAP. I can't imagine what they possibly could be trying to accomplish by destroying this feature.

It's IMAP, but it's behaving more like POP.

As an update, I found a support page on Cingular's site which says plainly for POP email:

"POP e-mails received and/or deleted from the device will not be deleted from the actual server Inbox. This is not a configurable option."

My worry, and guess, is that Cingular is using the word POP to refer to POP/IMAP.

Not having an option for this is stupid, even for POP. Not having it for IMAP defeats the entire purpose of IMAP.

I really hope they aren't this stupid, as I can't think of a single reason for this decision if it was made.

Actually, IMAP does work as advertised...I have it set up to work with our old Exchange 2000 server until we upgrade to 2003 SP2, and the IMAP functionality works fine...deletion in outlook is reflected on the BJ, and vice-versa. I wonder if the IMAP server you're connecting to is set up correctly?

I'm not sure about Outlook/Exchange related email accounts. As for standard IMAP/POP3 accounts using third party providers - I just got off the phone with Samsung Tier II Tech Support.

According to Samsung, this phone possesses no ability to delete emails on a remote server. Yes, according to them this renders the existence of the delete button pretty much useless, as deleted mail will be re-downloaded the next time a server check is made. Their suggestion for the time being was to not bother deleting mail on the device and simply limit the amount of mail the device keeps stored to avoid a bulk situation. Obviously, a less than reasonable suggestion, but still the best for the time being.

Apparently the concensus at tech support is this is a black eye on the usefullness of the standard email client (imho it's worse than that, it makes it halfway useless). Apparently this item was scheduled for mention in today's developer meeting as a possible candidate for a firmware update in the future.

We'll see. For now, it's just baffling it ever left the factory this way.

Wow...that's weird. I can absolutely say that the delete function works perfectly on an exchange 2000 mailbox with IMAP enabled.

Can't delete (on a non-outlook IMAP server), can't view other folders, can't save your sent mail to a folder of your choosing, etc, etc. Saying it supports IMAP is a bit of stretch, it supports some of IMAP. Doing email cleanup in idle time w/ my phone and having access to archived mail is really useful. Maybe Apple's entrance will motivate Microsoft to enhance their client a little, I'm not sure Cingular can do a thing about it.

In the meantime, I've started searching for other applications and have found two.

Flexmail but most people say it isn't ready for primetime and the only way to uninstall is to hard reset. There also doesn't seem to be a trial.

Profimail has gotten some good reviews but their website says that the Windows Mobile version isn't for sale any more.

Are there any others?

You can view other folders. It took me a while to find the option to subscribe to other folders. The downside is that you need to subscribe to them, so you'll get new email notifications for these folders. If you automatically filter things - that is a behaviour you might or might not want. Overall, I agree though, the email client is marginally functional. No IMAP IDLE support either.

So many frustrations with my Blackjack - the email client is only one of mine. I went back to my Nokia E70-2. If I need the 3G speed for tethering, I'll just put my SIM in an aircard.

It's disappointing though because the Blackjack is a phone I really wanted to make usable. HSDPA is very nice. Keyboard and screen are pretty good. WM5 Smartphone just isn't for me though. In my opinion it just isn't a good fit for people who aren't using a pretty much pure Microsoft infrastructure - Windows laptop/desktop, Exchange for email/calendaring, etc. My world is much more multiplatform.

Profimail is Symbian is very good, although still no IMAP IDLE support. I wonder why it isn't being sold anymore for WM5.
