Looking to buy a Blackberry - Can I simply swap my SIM card into it?

I am a Cingular customer with a non-PDA/Smartphone but currently have Media Net data/MMS/SMS plans. I have a chance to pick up a BB 8700 or 7290, but I want to make sure I will be able to use it with my current service, and not have to buy a Blackberry plan, etc.

If I buy this phone, will I be able to swap my SIM card into it and start using it right away? What about my Media Net data/MMS/SMS services? Will those work fine as well?

Thanks for helpin a NEWB out!

I'm pretty sure you can't use the data services but swapping the sim will get you phone service. The BB uses a different plan than other phone/pda data services so I doubt it will work.

Thanks for the reply--do you know if MMS service falls under data? Or would that work like the SMS/phone as well?

I have MediaWorks (i think thats what it's called, its a plan that was grandfathered in)...

it WILL work. I've got unlimited data/1500 sms/200mms and was able to keep my same data plan when I got my blackjack. Now as far as the SIM, I do think you need a 3G sim to connect to the 3G network, but i'm just guessing. Also, back to the data, someone did tell me that I may not be able to connect to the 3g network's data using my existing data plan, but they weren't sure...currently I don't have 3G in my area and haven't been in an area where there was so I could test it.

Basically, no BB data plan no Internet and no Email. You will have text message capability however, no MMS as I understand it. You have to connect to the RIM servers for those services, so that is why you have to have the BB data plan.

Media works will work on a Blackjack, not a Blackberry. Your SIM should work. I had an old 64K SIM in mine. When I switched from the 8700 to the Samsung Blackjack, the store put a 3G SIM in.

Media works will work on a Blackjack, not as the data plan for a Blackberry. One has to have a BB data plan for Internet and email.
