Blackjack - MediaNet vs. PDA Plan, what's the real deal?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm hoping someone has the real scoop on what plans are correct for this device?

Cingular Data Support just refused to take my call unless I switch to the PDA Plan.

However, I've read on these forums that the PDA plan doesn't even work with the Blackjack properly and that the MediaMax plan is the only one that does?

I have MMax 1000 right now, everything works "okay" ... Few things don't work, i.e. since yesterday Cingular Video won't load (keeps saying connection died) and IMAP email won't delete mails on the server. Both of these Cingular says is due to not having the PDA plan, which sounds like a load of bull to me.

Any insight is appreciated.

I would say something is wrong with your phone or either Cingular Video was down when you tried to access it. I dont have a Blackjack but I do have the Cingular MediaMax 200 bundle on my 8525 and I can access cingular video just fine. I just connected a few seconds ago to test it out.

I've been getting this message on Cingular Video for about 24 hours. No errors going to any other site that I can tell.

You havnt deleted the cingular proxy server have you? Besides that I dont know what else to tell you. Hope you can figure it out.

I don't believe so. Where is this setting and what should it be set to?

On my 8525 its under Connections and then manage existing connections. Under the wap.cingular connection you must have proxy settings set to:

HTTP: wireless.cingular.com port 80
WAP: <nothing>
Secure WAP: <nothing>
Socks: localhost port 1080

If you do not connect through Cingular's proxy server you cannot access Cingular Video. I guess you could test this by connecting to device.home. If that takes you to the Media Net page then you are connecting through the proxy server. If you get an error connecting to device.home then I would say the proxy was removed.

That is Cingulars answer for everything.

The Cingular Video server could possibly just be down for your area.

I have an 8125 with medianet bundle 200, and it works fine for me. Sounds like a proxy server issue as stated before

Everything continues to work fine but Cingular sites... Cingular Video, MediaNet Home, Cingular Mall, etc.. all say lost connection or unable to locate.

Proxy settings seem unchanged. In fact, the Blackjack doesn't seem to even let you edit these (or at least won't let you save changes).

set to hit wireless.cingular.com:80 for proxy

can't find socks server config option anywhere, might be missing from the BJ

I hate to call support, since they are just going to tell me it's because I dont' have the PDA plan. These pages did work when I first got the BJ, but have stopped. Only thing I edited in connections was to add DNS servers (I've tried with these removed and there, and nothing changes).

Figured this out.

Apparently, changing the connection type in IE on the BJ from "WAP" to "The Internet" breaks Cingular branded sites.

Can someone tell me what cingular video is? I missed something...I have an 8125 is this a site I browse to or what?

http://cingularvideo.cingular.com

Make sure you are setup for medianet with the correct proxy settings

I use medianet all the time and use wifi as well. When I browse to the site you gave me, the 8125 asks to downlaod a file to My Documents/?

Is this a proxy issue? When I use a normal web browser and go tot hat site it does say it is temporarily unavailable...

You'll find that newer smartphones/pocketpc's being rolled out by Cingular will come configured with two connection profiles - MediaNet(WAP) and MyISP(TheInternet). The wap one uses the proxy to access MediaNet content. Cingular added the MyISP profile so users can switch to a proxy-less connection, realizing the proxy can interfere with many of the phone's functions.
