8525 Bugs

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: wm8s

If we confine this thread to bugs that have hit widespread with either the 8525 hardware or firmware, or its implementation of Windows Mobile and the out-of-box software, perhaps someone will pay attention and fix some things...

Some issues that I know have been reported in other threads that I've also experienced:

(1) The email button brings up the title bar for email and cycles through accounts per the title bar, but the rest of the screen (i.e., the main part of the screen) doesn't display the messages, leaving the previous window visible.

(2) The phone sometimes will not resume from standby, even though the green connectivity LED continues to blink fine.

A few things I haven't seen that mine does:

(3) Sometimes mine stops recognizing the Storage Card. Popping it out and right back in brings it back to life.

(4) Sometimes even though I'm connected to my WLAN and the icons are indicating appropriately, the phone still tries to open or use a GPRS/EDGE connection.

(5) Miscellaneous freezeups that require a reboot.

Others?

i've had my 8525 for almost a month now, and havent experienced any of the above.

however, there is an interesting 'bug' going on with the WMP library. the playlists i have for each of the albums i have loaded on my storage card - through time, songs disappear off the playlists.

example: i have a playlist for a foo fighters album. slowly, track 1 disappears...then track 2...and so on and so forth.

a 'work around' that i've found is deleting the XMEMediaLibrary file in the MSMETADATA folder that the phone creates on the storage card. after, launch WMP. go to the following path: MENU>LIBRARY, MENU>UPDATE LIBRARY. WMP will rebuild the library, and viola, the playlists are as good as rain.

i've had this bug too

Posted by: MakaveliReturns

I'm a hardcore user and found a few bugs...

1) The keyboard stops working sometimes, and I have to reboot...

2) The caps button sometimes automatically turns on by itself...and is always on...a restart fixes it.

3) Wifi connectivity isn't the greatest...eats a lot of the battery but that's expected.

4) Thr keypad light needs to go on automatically when you slide it out...it only goes on when you press the first key when its dark.

5) The delete button sometimes goes crazy and keeps deleting stuff and I have to press a bunch of buttons to cancel it.

Maybe in 2007 well see an update from Cingular and the PTT feature.

i have the memory card not being read problem too. also, files ive encoded with pocketdivxencoder and played perfectly on my 8125 are now out of synch (audio and video) so i have to reencode the audio at a higher quality which takes up more space on the card

Posted by: SrchingForSignl

i haven't seen most of the above, but I'd underscore one point already made:

A brick has better WiFi reception than the radio HTC put in this turkey. I can be 20 obstructionless feet away from my Linksys Wireless-G and the phone goes deaf.

20 feet!

I'm guessing they made one of the usual battery life vs. performance decisions, but how could you even expect to use the stupid WiFi in a Starbucks with performance like that???

Posted by: MakaveliReturns

The default for wifi is set to battery...try changing to performance.

Posted by: Mikey D

For those complaining about wifi connectivity have you adjusted the performance vs battery life setting yet on the phone?

Under settings -> connections tab -> wireless LAN -> Power Mode tab

I have this repeatedly.

Posted by: dizzyj

I've had mine for 2 weeks now. One issue I've seen is that the directional keypad sometimes doesnt work. also, Every now and then the screen goes completely white. I have to hit the power button off and on to get it back

Posted by: serkle k

I noticed that the screen will go dark as i'm typing something... it goes in and out as if some sensor was being triggered... anyone else have this problem? It's only happened to me maybe 2 or 3 times, but when it happens it's annoying, and IMO it shouldn't happen.

To remedy this, you need to first of all stop the data connection, by going into your connection center and clicking the phone with the two arrows next to it. THEN activate the wifi. As well, your access point should be "my isp".
So to recap:
Change to my isp
turn off the data connection
turn on wifi

This should make for a good connection only using wifi, it works for me every time.

Are you guys running any 3rd party software? anything that closes programs out instead of minimizing them? etc.. My MDA/8125 kinda sucked out of the box, but after some free programs to manage the OS a bit better its rock solid.

Posted by: Ant

Yea me too...

I had the same problem with a few 8125's on where it didnt resume from sleep and the green light was just on.

Also had problems with the keys not working after the display is turned off for a few minutes.

GoTo Start/Settings/System Tab/Backlight/Battery Power Tab

you should see the option for "Turn off the backlight if device is not used for X minutes"

uncheck that box and the keyboard will light up when you slide it out.

I've seen some people say that you should turn the phone/radio off or set it to flight mode when connecting to WIFI. My question is why would you do that? I for one would like to be able to recieve phone calls while on wifi.

Biggest problem for most is that when connecting to WIFI, you cannot go through Cingular's Proxy which is how your connection is set up by default. to keep from having to add it back everytime you need to connect through the proxy, create another connection then all you have to do is switch connections.

All you have to do is what I mentioned in post 12. It is a very easy and quick way to do it, and it works every time.

Exactly what do you mean when you say Connection Center? Do you mean Comm Manager? If so there is not a phone with two arrows next to it, atleast not on my 8525. If you click on the phone icon in Comm Manager you turn off your radio. If someone tries to call they will immediately go to your voicemail.

Yes the comm manager. Its the third button down on the left hand side. It appears greyed out for a few seconds when you open the screen, but soon turns green. When it turns green, press it and it will end your data connection. THEN turn on your wifi and it will use wifi as the prefered connection and also allow calls at the same time. Just be sure your using the my isp access point.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

ok, thanks. I'll give it a try.

did it work for ya

Posted by: jimalaiyah

I'm having a few problems...

1) the same messaging problem noted in the first post, it's annoying.

2) Wave device error:
I'll have it on for a half hour or so and then it will all of a sudden stop ringing (It'll vibrate, but no audio) and media player or any other programs with audio won't produce sound. The speakerphone still works through these issues and if I restart it, it'll be fine for another half-hour.

3) Camera goes black:
On approximately the same timeline as the sound thing, after about 20 minutes, the camera, when activated will be black... the program loads and I get all the controls, but the viewfinder is black... as in there's no image. If I restart, it'll work again for a short while.

If anyone has any idea why this is happening I'd appreciate it... I kinda need a ringer

these keyboard problems don't sound like a software issue (at least #5)but a hardware issue i would definitely go back and exchange it...or do a warrenty exchange...

from my experience is that sometimes when wifi is on it shows it's connected but if your not actually recieving data or if you have a very weak signal then it will switch it to GPRS...you have to make sure you have a good connection in order for it not to switch to GPRS...

some of these problems don't sound like bugs that you have to wait for an update or some type of tweak to come out to fix it...this is what i would do if i were you...do a hard reset and start from scratch and install programs and apply tweaks one at a time seeing if everything is okay after each one...sounds crazy to do but some of these issues are not known or widely shared bugs...something might have gone bad somewhere down the line...or even after doing a hard reset (before you install or change anything) see if you still got those bugs from the get go, if not then i had to do with something else...if you do have those issues starting from scratch then i would just go back and return/exchange your device....

GSM/UMTS handoffs in borderline GSM/UMTS areas doesn't work well.

This is my second 8525...same happened on the other one, and I sent that back because it would also shut down automatically...these are new phones not refurbs.

There seems to be a major bug with the device with regards to buzzing noises coming from the external speaker. I first posted this issue in this forum but got no responses from anybody. I then posted it in the Pocket PC forum, and it seems plenty of 8525 and TyTn owners came out of the woodwork to complain about the same problem. See here:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1052044

I don't know why any of you in this Cingular forum haven't seen this issue arise on your devices, but it's definitely not an isolated case. It was enough to have me return the device entirely and go back to using a BlackBerry, and until it's resolved by HTC I would discourage anyone from buying an 8525 if they plan on using wireless Active Sync.

Posted by: serkle k

^^ i got the buzzing noise the first time i recieved a call... it hasn't happened since... i've had this for about 2 weeks now...

Posted by: MHC48

I started this week to get the freezes needing reboots. However, I'm assuming its because of one of the many new programs I've added on. Until now it was perfect. Fortunately it hasn't gotten bad enough yet to start removing them one at a time and checking.

I dont have this problem even with only one bar of wifi. You just have to deactivate the data connection before you turn on wifi.

Quick question.. when you press Contacts and it gives you the row of letters.. (starting with #ab) are you supposed to be able to click those and have it scroll you down to the names of the letter you pressed? When I click them they do nothing. Just wondering if this is a glitch or not.

Posted by: mike5718

My biggest problem is unreliable Activesync. I sync with two PC's. One always syncs fine, the other is about a 50/50 chance. Sometimes a reset of the 8525 fixes it for a few times, sometimes I must delete the device from the Activesync on the PC and redo it. Sometimes I must uninstall Activesync on the PC and reinstall it. I have the "Enable advanced network functionality" checked.

Hmm I knew it had to be me.. Is there a software update or something I can download to fix this?

Have you tried the active sync work around? it might help, if you don't already have it... here's the link to the thread on how to...

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but here's an annoying bug that's cropped up on a new 8525 a family member picked up: Within 5 minutes of use, most all buttons will become unresponsive and the start menu will flicker back to the "Desktop" after pressing it. If I extend the keyboard, the start menu will begin to repeatedly open and close itself over and over again until it's closed.

Firmware issue, or is the 8525 just broke and needs replacement?

send it back, it's FUBAR.

I have a few glitches that are mentioned above. The workaround for the messaging button not working properly is to go start->messaging, then use the button to go to the account you want.

I see this behavior every once in a while and agree with how annoying it is. I haven't figured out any pattern to when it happens or what to do about it though.
