8525 to Activate or Upgrade?

I have a family plan as AT&T subscribers which means my 7am - 7 pm is still free. Now, I want to upgrade my phone to the 8525 and I was told that I had to migrate to Cingular which means I might lose my family plan, and my wifeand son has also to migrate to Cingular because of this.

Want I really want to have is use my current phone number without having to lose my AT&T plan. If I activate the 8525 as new, and have Cingular unlock it (since I travel to the Phil and want to be able to use other sim cards), will I be able to just get the sim of my current phone and plug it into the 8525 assuming they unlock it? However, even though I can use my current sim in my unlocked 8525, my current sim will not have the data package the the new activation of the 8525 will have. Will it be easy to cancel the data pkg from the new sim and add the data pkg to my old sim?

Any advise will be much appreciated.

Sam's club and Amazon has it at $299.99 for new activation.
