Straight out facts about BJ and Dataplans?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So there are a ton of threads on here regarding the blackjack and dataplans. I'm looking at getting the Blackjack from wirefly for about 50 bucks after the rebates. Now I would like to know what you people who sent in your rebates did and/or have done in the past with rebates that are identical (i.e. ones that required a specific data plan). Did you get your phone with the data plan, then switch it to the mediamax etc? One rebate says "Unlimited Data Feature" in the fine text (the $100rebate). But the $50 says "Copy of your wireless bill dated 150 days or more after the Activation (or Process) Date on your sales receipt." and the thing is in its fine text is "Your rebate request will not be honored if (d)you downgraded your wireless service plan". If you change your data plan is that considered a "downgrade". **So by activating the phone with the $40 data plan, send the $100 rebate, change teh data plan to the 20 media plan, then send the $50 rebate in do you think it will be fine?**

FROM EXPERIENCE PLEASE.

what i want to know is if there is anyone here who actually has a media max plan and uses a PDA wiht it.. and if it bills them for the usage because its not a PDA plan. im pretty sure it dont but i got a blackjack the other day and used it for a little while with my unlimited media net plan.. im kinda nervous now

I've been using a MediaNet plan on my Treo 650 since I bought it a year and a half ago. Switched to the MediaMax200 plan when that came out. Everything works fine. I get billed the regular $19.99/mo and that's it.

You'll find that the people who receive the $1500 data bills have pay-per-use still on their accounts. Go onto the online account manager and triple check that your account is set up properly. They may be better now, I don't know, but the CSR's I dealt with 18 months ago were poorly trained and it took five or six calls to get my lines set up properly since every time a CSR would fix one thing he or she would futz up something else.

If you're concerned, just check your data usage via OLAM.

I had the MediaMax 1000 plan on my BlackJack. Cingular video didn't work, it kept telling me to call customer service. As soon as I called them, they told me I had to have a PDA plan, and the equivalent PDA plan is $20 more per month!

I'm using a grandfathered mediamaxx plan unlimitted data, 100sms, 100 mms.. and it works fine with the blackjack. I couldn't get the $100 rebate becuase of it, but no bigge, that's only 2 months of the more expensive dataplans. I'd rather keep a cheap monthly plan than get 100 bucks now, and pay out my *** for the remainder of my contract.

well i just got the blackjack a day ago, i've had the 1000 media max plan for about a week before i got the blackjack, everything works CV works 3g works everything, don't know about the rebate yet though

Media Max absolutely will work proprely on the BJ. In fact any and all data plans (except blackberry) will work as well as the rest. In fact the Media Max plan is arguably more compatible because it's the only plan that gives you Cingular Video (unless there was a recent change.)
People on other threads are reporting that they are getting rebates on Media Max with 8525s and Blackjacks. There's never going to be a garuntee, but it looks like it IS working

Well i just upgraded through premier and it added pda connect through a package discount went saw i still had smartphone unlimited dropped pda connect and blam no internet at all so call customer service and says i need pda for it to work so drop smartphone and add pda and <restart phone> and it works cv still works and i didn't change anything explain that if you will i thought the smartphone unlimited should work but it didn't don't know why

If the Blackjack is using the wap.cingular access point, then I don't see how it's technically possible for MediaMax or Smartphone connect to not work. Unless the very recently implemented some kind of enforcement system. Smartphone and MMax are both wap.cingular only, so it should work. There's no rocket science behind it. My SIM with MMax has always worked for every PDA as long as it was configured for wap.cingular.
A couple of weeks ago CV was NOT available on PDA connect. IF it is now, then that's something new. Maybe they did change something recently to preven the BJ from using Smartphone. If so this would indicate the beginning of total data plan enforcement.

Did you power cycle the phone in between each time you switched?

I got a Blackjack yesterday. I have the Smartphone Unlimted Connect. The video does not work, but I really do not care about that much. Can stream Sirius, email, and surf web. We will see if rebate goes through, my hunch is that it will.

I think I figured it out. You said you ordered Smartphone connect through Premiere. That means you probablly didn't acutually have ANY data plan until you called. Cingular doesn't add data plans to the Premiere orders. They just fill the physical phone, you have to call them to actually activate the data plan (retarted). So I suspect you didn't have any data plan at all when you thought you had Smartphone connect.
I bet if you called or went on to OLAM and dropped PDA, then called and added Media Max or smartphone you'll be working just fine

NO i had two data plans smartphone and pda unlimited i got the phone as a package a weird premier thing where they make you upgrade to a new data and rate plan but i already had that rate plan and it just added the data plan to my account i was paying for both and i did restart it between both times as i state <restart> i think cingular has something in their systems that has to do with 3g and data plans but i can't explain it internet was working before i knew i had two plans so took of expensive pda plan and kept smartphone they did not know i had blackjack waited <restart phone> and blamo no internet can't explain called customer service they ask for imei gave it to them and he says you have blackjack and i say yes and he says need pda plan puts that on <restart> and it works didn't change any settings so explain that one

When I bought my Blackjack (the first day it was released in the stores) the rep told me I absolutely had to have the PDA Connect Unlimited (39.99) plan and proceeded to add it to my account. As soon as I got home I read a post on this forum from someone who carefully read the rebate form (I didn't). He/she stated that the form specifically states "an unlimited data rate plan" where it pertains to the Blackjack. For some of the other PDA phones it specifically states "unlimited smartphone connect plan", "39.99 or higher applicable unlimited data rate plan", "media Max bundle" etc. That day, after reading that post, I changed to the Mediamax 1000 Bundle 29.99 ( includes 1000 messages). I checked the status of my rebate 2 days ago and it says "Your rebate has been processed. A check for $100.00 was mailed to you". I checked my account online and I am not being charged extra for data. I know the rebate is a gift card but it says "check" on Cingular's website. I am waiting for the check/gift card to arrive in the mail and will post as soon as I get it. Internet, Cingular video and everything works perfect on my phone

Willie, I don't know what happened to your account and the data plans. Especially having two data plans at the same time is just too wierd. I bet when they took off the PDA plan it disabled your Smartphone plan as well. I don't think the provisioning system is designed to handle that. What they should have done is remove both plans and re-add just the Smartphone.
I suspect if you went on to OLAM right now, removed your data plan, then called Cingular and had them add Smartphone Connect, it would work. At least it SHOULD. Re-add Smartphone or Media Max on OLAM if it'll let you, but you might not have the option and call.
I can only speculate why it dosen't work. But it SHOULD and is supposed to work. That line Cingular gives you about how you "Have to have the PDA" plan is just them repeating what they were told to say, not the facts. The intent is to sell you the data plan that they want you to be on for that phone.
But they should all work. They all work the same way way so there's no reason it shouldn't.
If you have problems getting 3G data vs EDGE data, that's a separate issue. They need to make sure "UTMS capable" is on your account, but that should have been taken care of when you got the Blackjack.

Ok, thats the big question i was wondering is if you do the mediamax, even with teh smaller amount of text messages, will the rebate work? It sounds like it does since its been processed and mailed.

Yeah... it was... according to the website where you check the status. I really didn't know if it would be approved or not. Like I said in my previous post, I will post again when I get the check/gift card.

This has been one confusing ordeal for me, hearing so many different answers about what qualifies for the rebate and which plan is the correct plan for the phone to work properly. I talked to at least 5 cs people (over the phone and in the corporate stores) and I even called the number on the rebate form. All of the cs reps that I talked to over the phone seemed unsure especially after I said that Cingular video didn't work for me with the PDA connect plan. The reps in the stores all consistantly said the PDA connect plan was absolutely necessary (of course).
