Access pop/smtp email via BIS?

Howdy all, I've had the Pearl with T-Mobile for about a week now, and have been amazed with the functionality and ease of use, so far this is about as close to perfect [for what I want] as anything I've seen. One thing that's been bothering me though is trying to access my work email which is running Exchange. On my previous phone (SE P900) I setup a pop/smtp connection to poll every X minutes and it worked like a charm. Now when I go through the BIS internet setup (either on my phone or via T-Mobile's website) it's trying to connect to the Outlook Web Access site (webmail.mycompany.com) and keeps getting hosed. Specifically I can set it up properly and I get the service book delivered to my phone, however I never receive any emails and a short time afterward I get an email from donotreply@blackberry.com saying that "...this email account is no longer accessible from your Blackberry handheld...", and on the internet email setup site this account is now shown as Invalidated.
I currently have other accounts successfully working including my personal server, gmail, and @tmo.blackberry.net, and have not had any problems with those. I can access my Outlook webmail from my Blackberry browser using the same credentials that I used in the internet setup and it works fine (and that's been my current workaround), it just doesn't seem to get delivered to my phone automatically. What's really frustrating is that the "Advanced Options" in the internet email setup are really weak, I was hoping that I could just type in the pop and smtp servers and be fine, but no such luck so far.
Has anybody else run into the same problem? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
John

Why aren't you setting up your work email as POP if you can use POP? BIS won't need/use your SMTP server. Delete the work account and start over as a POP account.
Don't specify your password on the first screen. On the second setup screen, choose I will provide the settings to add this e-mail account.

When I did my work e-mail that was on an exchange server I set it up like:
mail.companyname.com/exchange
and then filled in the information it asked me for and all was well.

Wow that worked like a champ, thanks!! That was pretty much the last thing that was really bothering me about the Pearl and Blackberry service.
