Is DNS slow on your Blackjack?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Just wondering if any of you were having trouble with DNS on your Blackjacks. I'm currently using Media Max 200 plan, wap.cingular, with automatic DNS servers. When I am in IE, it can take 15-20 seconds to "locate" a web page before "opening" it. This is on the 3G network with four bars. Has anyone tried messing around with changing to other DNS servers for faster address resolution? I've tried Opera mini, and java version of opera mini...they're marginally faster.

do a search on opendns on the forum. there are others faster, but still not extremely fast.

I tried using the opendns servers, put them in under the cingular GPRS settings, but when I went to welcome.opendns.org website, it gave me the "oops" saying that I wasn't configured properly.

YES, dns is SLOWWW.

Problem with using the opendns servers...atleast in my experience is that Cingular Video and MediaNet tank out. Internet works fine tho..

here is some info that i copied from the blackjack tips/tricks thread. can't remember who i copied it from now. i'm using the denver ones with mediamax 200 and it works pretty well.

Some DNS servers I recommend:
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4
4.2.2.5
4.2.2.6

Here are two located in Denver (on the backbone NAP) that have a fast response time.

ns1.granitecanyon.com 205.166.226.38
ns2.granitecanyon.com 38.97.212.53

i had the open dns and it didnt mess with cv and it also wasnt that much faster maye 1_2 secs

I changed my setting to the Open DNS settings earlier today. When it worked it was 20 times faster. I would select a favorite, and it would switch from locating to opening nearly immediately. Then other times today my Internet wouldn't work at all. Hopefully it was just a hiccup.
Here is the link to their site. This walk through is for PPC, but you can use the DNS settings on smartphone too.

working much quicker for me, even though i'm in an edge area. Many thanks!!!

Posted by: lostinphotoland

ironically....whenever i'm on edge, dns seems to go faster

I'm seeing all the exact same things on a Treo 750v. OpenDNS is a little faster most of the time, but sometimes it just hangs. The DNS lookup is definitely faster under GSM ironically. It all makes me want to go back to Verizon for their network. It works much better for data.

Posted by: dgelfuso

i followed a thread that suggested using public servers 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 and I think that has improved the performance.

Posted by: hidden2u

wow, i notice a big difference now using openDNS on Edge. thanks!

Changing the DNS in the GPRS connection settings does not help. If you change them to OpenDNS and go to the welcome page it shows "OOPS". That shows that the DNS changes do not actually change.

Anyone know how to do it?

You're right I got the same thing, but there is still a definite difference when you put those servers in the GPRS settings.

Posted by: mikerpalmer

See for me it's hit or miss on the speed. I think it still uses Cingular's DNS servers which can be fast or slow.

I agree. On my crappy Verizon v276 with 1xRTT data, I was able to read a few articles while taking a dump...with my BJ, by the time the article opens, I'm done with my business already. This is really cramping my lifestile.

Thanks for the visual ....

I guess time-to-dump is the new performance metric.

A couple of things I've noticed:

On my Blackjack, the GPRS Settings from the warehouse were not configured like other Cingular GPRS phones. The username was "wap.cingulargprs.com" instead of "WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM" Also, the password was a string of characters that was longer than "CINGULAR1" I changed these two settings back, and then I put in the new DNS servers 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2. I also set my network mode to GSM only. These changes seem to have improved my web browsing dramatically.

I'm not sure what the culprit was, but part of it seems to be that I live in an area where 3G is present, but weak. This was causing the phone to switch back and forth between EDGE and 3G constantly. Keeping it in EDGE mode delivers a more consistent experience.

BTW, Lifehacker just named opendns.org as one of it's best apps of 2006. It may not work for the BJ, but you should certainly give it a try on your computer or router. It can speed up desktop web browsing, and also make it safer by blocking malicious websites.

I changed the DNS to the ones listed and my performance is much better!

Posted by: mikerpalmer

I don't think changing the DNS settings under the GPRS connection does anything. If you change them to OpenDNS and then visit the welcome page it show the Opps which shows it's still using Cingular.

Anyone know how to change the DNS?

Posted by: revelationz

^^ I agree with this guy. changed the settings and restarded the BJ n it still said oops on the page.

Posted by: TriAxis

So what DNS's did most people decide on. I changed my settings to the OpenDNS settings of
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
others are using these
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2

Has anyone tried both and can recommend which ones are better???

Also does anyone know what the WINS and Alt WINS settings are for below the DNS settings? See pic below, what is Alt WINS???

Posted by: maevro

I have changed between a few different ones and they all seam to work the same, but maybe thats just me. I think the biggest difference I saw was when I switched the setting from WAP to Internet.

OpenDNS doesnt work on my Blackjack.

Posted by: mikerpalmer

Changing it in the GPRS settings does not work. If you look in the registry the information is received via DCHP and uses 66.102.163.231 66.209.10.201 and there is no real way to change it that I can find. When I try via registry editor it gives me an error (probably because it grabbed that IP and it's not set by the registry).

Any one have any ideas on how to "really" change the DNS settings?

Posted by: shizat63

I changed my DNS to 10.10.10.1 and .2 (bogus IPs) then I rebooted. I was still able to connect via IE.

Posted by: mikerpalmer

Ok I confirmed it, changing the DNS settings in GPRS does not do anything. We are getting he DNS servers via DHCP. I was able to unlock my phone to modify the registry for under wwan1-wap.cingular-1 DHCPDNS IP info but every time the phone connects it overrides my settings for DNS.

Posted by: shizat63

what about setting both DNS and static IP?

www.whatismyip.com

Posted by: rctoyguy

I have the same problem on an 8525, and it is driving me crazy... I've tried OpenDNS, I've tried (I think) all of the others listed here, I've tried the DNS #s from my home ISP - and I have never seen a bit of difference.

I don't think you could put the static IP in, since it could change the next time you "connect" (that is another issue I have - why shouldn't it just freakin' stay connected?)

If someone can solve this, I'll buy you a steak dinner! - well, not really - I would just be forever thankful!

Posted by: mikerpalmer

Ok, since the Cingular DHCP server is sending down he DNS servers we need to figure a way to stop it. No matter if you delete the DHCPDNS key it will be recreated at next data connection. I did some reading at Microsoft and we should be able to stop the DNS info request by adding a DhcpOptions key. Problem is I am no good at Hex and don't know what should be put in there. Anyone have any ideas? Here is the MS reference. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa925750.aspx

Posted by: mikerpalmer

I tried to set the DhcpOptions under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\wwwan-wap.cingular.1\Parms\Tcpip to be 07 01 03 0F 2C 2E 2F (left out 06 which is DNS per rfc 2132) and that still does not help. There is a key (which I cannot locate the specifics) prevreqoptions still shows it's grabing 06 (DNS) from DHCP. I am stuck.
