So...Im eligible for an upgrade the 1st week of January...

I knew I wanted the 8125 until the upgrade [[8525]] came out.

Ive been doing some research and from what I understand there's not much difference between the two besides the price and the appearance.

So basically, I just wanted a few opinions on which one to get. I'd much rather spend less money on the 8125...especially since no one has completely sold me on the 8525...but then again, i like having the lastest gadgets, so Im still undecided.

Can anyone help???

id definetly get the 8525 because of the 3g(if its available in your local area).

I recently picked up an 8525 and, after some ANNOYING issues with getting the microsd card stuck (still happening, but oh well, it works), I LOVE it.

The 3G is definitely awesome as hell.

I live in Austin, so the speeds absolutely rock.

It's great sitting in the restroom at work, taking a **** while looking up nudie pics.

did some research and all you found to be different is price and appearance...lol...okay, here's what the 8525 has over the 8125...faster processor (400MHz), more memory, 3G, 2MP camera, better keyboard layout, and more buttons like the windows key and "ok" button...to me those were MAJOR upgrades from the 8125...400Mhz Processor in a 3G device this small...enough said....cheers...

I was able to upgrade from the 8125 to the 8525 for no cost, and at the price I think the swap was well worth it. After using it for several weeks, I have come to the following conclusions (most of which are copy/pasted from an earlier post):

Overall, there are few things that make me happy that I swapped out my 8125 for it, including:

1) 3G - significantly faster than EDGE, and has been available almost everywhere I have traveled on business, including Las Vegas & San Antonio, but not in Chattanooga. It's great here in Atlanta. I can downloading 100+ POP email messages (set at 10k) in less than a minute and web surfing is significantly faster.

2) Click-wheel - I did not come from the Blackberry world, but I really like having the wheel. I find that I only have to take the stylus out a couple of times per day, rather than all the time with the 8125.

3) Device speed - it is noticably better than the 8125 (not overclocked) when launching programs, but I cannot say that the increased performance alone would be reason to switch. Actions through ActiveSync (program installs, file moves, etc.) are significantly quicker. Deleting dozens of emails at a time still results in a wait, but its seconds now instead of minutes. SlingPlayer (lastest beta) performance was about the same. Performance of TomTom Navigator 5 was about the same as on my 8125 and TCPMP ran no faster or smoother than on the 8125. (I used the 8525 to watch two movies on the way to Las Vegas and the 8125 to watch two movies on the return flight)

4) Improved keyboard layout - the markings on the new keyboard and locations of the alternative characters (like numbers) works better for me.

The downsides that I have found so far:

1) Battery life - seems to be shorter than my 8125, I don't know if this is because the 3G radio requires more juice, or the processor requires more juice. Ordinarily, I can get 2-3 days out of a charge on the 8125, with the 8525 I have to recharge every night, with similar usage habits.

2) microSD storage - I've already invested over $150 in 2 - 2GB miniSD cards for the 8125. It was painful to spend another $50 on a 1GB microSD card for the new device so I could watch movies on the flight to Las Vegas. Why did HTC make this switch?

3) USB headphone/power connector - while there have been dongle solutions posted here, I hate the fact that I am going to have to use a dongle to "split" the single USB connector on the phone to accomodate use of both headphones and a car-charger at the same time and have to use a converter to converter 3.5mm to USB. Kludgy, clunky and inefficient. (think passenger riding in a car watching a movie)

4) Smaller keys on the keyboard -they are still larger than the Treo or Blackberry, but for someone that is 6'5" with big hands, the decreased size of the keys is not an overly welcome change.

5) It's still WM5 - even with the increased processor speed, it is still prone to lock-ups. I still have to reboot it periodically when an application or window locks up.

6) It's thinner - you would think that's a good thing, but it means that it does not fit in my existing ProClip mounting bracket...

7) The camera - 2mp or not, the camera is just as crappy as that in the 8125.

8) On/off/standby switch - is in a horrible location compared to the 8125. I much prefer it on the top of the device, away from other buttons.

9) PTT talk button - why is this not disabled if Cingular is not offering the service on the device. I cannot tell you how many times I have accidentally hit the *&#$ button only to be told that it's not active!!

10) No eGrip available for it yet - the device seems slicker, more prone to slippery fingers and accidental drops. eGrip will fix that.

So, the million dollar question...would I immediately upgrade from the 8125 to the 8525. The answer is no. Faced with the device cost, new storage cost and cable/dongle cost, new bracket cost, I think I would pass. Overall, I definitely like it and would strongly recommend it to anyone that is looking for a new Smartphone with this type of functionality, but given what I already have, the costs to upgrade are not worth it. If your company is paying for it, I give it an enthusiastic thumbs-up.

There is a fix for this so you can remap that key to make it useful to you. Check xda developers.
