3G/Edge network selector?

hey, 3g started rolling out where i am, i dont want my blackjack to die all the time, is there i way i can select which network i wanna be on, and just swtich to 3g when i wanna use it? i know it was some number u dial or something, whats the numbers? also is there an easier way? thanks
