I was just able to order the Panasonic GU-87 thru AT&T Wireless today in the U.S., they are selling it for $399.99, but because of the company I work for I got it for $199.99. For those who are interested I will let you know what firmware version it has, I should get it Tuesday or Wed.

Posted by: jfandem

REally? I just saw the gd87 for the first time today, all i can say is WOW. That screen is huge and sharp, i want to get one. Where can you order the gu87? Ill pay 399.99 since i was gonna pay 500 lol....let us know when i can order one asap! thanks!

Posted by: lost_rebel

I have heard that there will be a $100 rebate on it as well.

Posted by: cjzero

I received mine from AT&T this morning...so far so good.
Looks like Nico's site is down right now, had to take a picture for a decent background...

Posted by: Gate4

what version software did it come with?

Hey cj! I remember i sold my s100 to you a while back.....now im getting the gu87 too! Are there any att logos on it? are they non removeable like the vodaphone ones on the gd87? I wonder if there is a way to unlock this phone.....tell us about it, if there are any new features!

Posted by: cjzero

No AT&T Logos at all, except the banner on the screen
Software Version is A38-38, also says no custom pack.
Can store 200 SMS on the phone memory.
Don't like the fact that when you remove the time from the main LCD, it also removes it from the sub-LCD.
The buttons kinda suck, everything else is OK.

Posted by: jfandem

No logo's at all? Thats great to hear, its like getting a unbranded gd87! Also is that the newest firmware? Does it fix the voicemailbox number problem? What all did it come with? thanks! BTW Cjzero, check PM

Posted by: CycloneFr

Eh man! great news...I think US users can now spread the BIOS A38 if anyone got it from nowhere !

Posted by: glowrider

Whew, thank god I sold my GD87 yesterday for 455

Posted by: cjzero

The version AT&T has right now they sent with the original Panasonic badges, the Internet button has the @ symbol instead of the mmode symbol, the outside says Panasonic, not AT&T Wireless and there is no voicemail icon printed on the 1 key.

You get the phone/battery, headset with answer/end button and wall charger.

The data cable will be out next week, MMS works fine and I have been able to set up mmode mail + 2 POP3 accounts.

Posted by: jfandem

So do you think its worth getting? Would you like a s300 instead? I cannot decide between the 2, even though the s300 has a smaller screen, and no cam, and is more expensive......i dont know. Can you take some pics? Any new features above the normal gd87? thanks! Also IM me if you can cj, jfandem is my name

Posted by: 8390 Gal

More info please. How's the RF? Is the keypad that yucky green?

Thanks-

Posted by: lost_rebel

It is exactly the same hardware.

Posted by: tekno_geek911

thank god i got rid of mine!!! everyones gonna have it now!

Posted by: Confused69u

but the 3650 just came out also :P

Posted by: Blazers4ever

I just ordered mine, and they said they couldn't discount the phone even though I am eligible for a upgrade discount. The reason he gave was that the phone is so new. I even offered to extend my contract, and he still said it was impossible. Definite BS because I was on the phone earlier inquiring about adding an extra line to my account and the CSR offered me a $50 discount (for the GU87) and waive the activation fee for the new line.

What I think I will do is use the phone for a couple of weeks, then send it back. Then when it is finally available at retail stores, I will try and get my discount through them.

That's what I'm planning to do also. By the time 30 days is up there should be rebates and discounts in place.

just curious where all of you are ordering your GU87 from? which website? thanks

yeah true....but over here everybody has clamshells mostly crappy sprint phones&v60's lol i doubt theyll want the 3650 because of the keypad...never know though besides i'll most likely have something else in a couple weeks...lol

Posted by: bluesxtreme

I assume that they are all locked to ATT? Since there aren't any unlocking services in the US, will ATT do it for you?

Posted by: tekno_geek911

no way at&t unlocks.....

Posted by: lost_rebel

I agree, to get it unlocked you will have to go outside of AT&T channels to get it done. Probably a hack site.

Posted by: schmoe

Yay! I finally got my GD/GU-87! Ordered from AT&T yesterday around 4:00pm, it arrived today. Now that is excellent service! I don't really buy into the poor reviews, its bound to be a lot better than my POS T68i.

Posted by: CycloneFr

The GU comes with A38 right?
Is there still the problem that the 110K pixel camera takes picture in 23232pixel? thanx

Posted by: Confused69u

how much did it cost ya? 399?

Posted by: tru

All your handsets from ATT will have version 38 and they will have the Panasonic badges and keypad, these were the first 4900 units ithe country. All after shipments will have an ATT keypad and ATT on the plastics.

Posted by: monkeesnbananaz

this blows now my phone wont be so unique. I'm still happy though because at the price of the GU87 you'll be hard pressd to run into someone with one.

Posted by: devis

I bet there is noone in New Orleans with this phone

but then again... who knows....

Posted by: pinoy

too bad for the peeps with the ugly VODA logo. good thing i got the unbranded one.

it's worth the money while it lasts... but then again im using a P8 which is 'rare' at the moment. got me 2 of them.

outzz.

Posted by: devis

I'd rather have Vodafone then ATT... but then again, it's just me

Posted by: tru

As for New Orleans, the phones we have to demo are all unbranded and unlocked...NO SIM LOCK...hehehe.

Posted by: devis

I have seen 1 ATTWS store in New Orleans. HOwever, when I go to look at the services offered in the website it tells me that my zip does not have service...

Posted by: tru

Im sorry, when you mentioned New Orleans I thought you meant CTIA which starts Monday, not a store. We'll have our units on display and answer questions as well as further concerns on to engineers at the show.

Advice: Read the reviews and save your money. Howards review was so right on. My review reflects his to the letter.

Posted by: The Rex

wrt the loss of exclusivity as it seems more and more people are getting the gd87, it was fun while it lasted

what's your review then?>

Posted by: Blazers4ever

He doesn't like it like most all the GSM phones he has used.

Posted by: The Rex

i think the biggest gripe howie had was the lack of features wrt price (which i kinda agree with, but i still think the gd87's an excellent phone)... if you can get one at a nice price, no problem

Beautiful screen, second to none so far.
Nice camera.
Nice looking phone. I love the look.
Kind of big when opened up.

Boring menu.
horrible call quality.
Volume is very low.
Speakerphone is lousy.
No active flip.
Voice dialing is not that great.
Phonebook is the worst I have seen.
Very boring overall.

This is just a portion of what I think.
Read the others, they almost mirror what I have said here.

Good luck with yours.

okay, I agree that the volume should be louder as well as the speaker phone. Active flip could be nice.

Call quality could be your service provider's fault. I have pretty good call quality.
Voice dialing I couldn't comment coz i never used it.
Phonebook, what's wrong about it? I found it's better than samsung's and motorola's.
and...boring menu...I don't know what u mean by that. I mean, do you open the phone and look at the menu to make urself happier when ur bored?
So which phone's menu looks interesting? just being curious.

(Beautiful screen, second to none so far.) I agree 100%, makes reading email and sms messages so much easier, this is a big plus in my book.

(Nice camera.) I agree to, wish image sizes could be bigger like 480 X 280 or something along those lines so they would be bigger when emailed to a computer.

(Nice looking phone. I love the look. ) I agree

(Kind of big when opened up. ) Yes it is big but so what its a very nice solid feeling phone, and when it is folded its very slim unlike most flip phones.

(Boring menu.) Menu is not borring just a bit misorganized.

(horrible call quality.) This must be a network isue for you, My call quality is awesome. better than all my other phones so far. So is my signal strenght better than my T68i and Nokia, in the areas I use my phone.

(Volume is very low.) I disagree most of my calls I need to turn the volume down halfway otherwise its too loud.

(Speakerphone is lousy. ) Show me a better Cell Phone Speaker Phone, works great when using the #121 Voice Info feature.

(No active flip.) I dont care about that, If it did have it I would have the feature disabled.

(Voice dialing is not that great. ) Can't say since I dont use this feature and have no intrest in using it.

(Phonebook is the worst I have seen. ) I agree comapred to the T68i Phone Book, which was more powerfull and better organized, but I am getting use to it.

This review honestly reflects my opinion to a T! I totally agree!

I use the voicedial religiously, the only thing that I wish is that it had more than 10 entries or better yet, had real speech interpatation.

As far as the Phone book, the Pana Allure rocked pretty good, allowed a lot of flexability in dialing options and stored 4 phone numbers/entry. I do not know why it was not fully transplanted to this mobile.

Needs better sync software, afterall this is an awesome business mobile. But is very difficult to get you PB and email addresses to the mobile as well as, at least one way, sync with the outlook calendar. Needs to be able to do this via IR

Support for txt, xls and doc file types would be awesome for the business user as well.

I know the mobile has limited user memory but after all it is my user memory, let me use it.

Use the full resolution of the camera, if it slows down the processor then that is my problem. Make the resolution selectable. As far as memory, see above.

But Overall I am pretty satisfied, if X70 resolves most of these issues plus a couple of more, I will upgrade, otherwise I will wait until next spring!

Well, it was fun fooling with the GU87 for a few days. It's a good thing my Wife doesn't care to test them like I do. Anyhow, my review hasen't changed. The phone is off back to AT&T as of today.
I just want to make a few things clear. I see that their is some hard feelings on feedback, whether it's me or someone else. Keep in mind folks that this is what this forum is all about. The final decision is going to be yours regardless of what anyone says.

Going forward, I just want to add some final thougts on this particular phone. I still feel that this phone has a very unique look. But when you use it day in and day out, it's hard to justify the price even with the discount. I mean, look whats coming in the next few months( 3650, 7250, Nec 515 and even the newer version of the GU87). To spend $300 bucks right now is just foolish for me( actually my Wife).

And to the person who said I don't like any GSM phones, let me respond to that.

I think the Nokia 8390i is one of the nicest phones in the line up. I just loved it. My Wife loves hers. Giving mine up was a very difficult thing to do. Thank god my v60i came to my rescue.

Frail47 turned me on to the Nokia 3590. Now this is one fine phone for the money and overall functionality. Great feel and fantastic volume with very good features.

Now, who can say that I hate all GSM phones?
Lastly, I am very honest with reviews. In doing so, you hurt peoples feelings at times. I thought I was going to be banned from the board for posting some very nasty reviews of the v60t. The cool thing about it is that the folks that were offended, most came around to reflect the same thing once the dust settled.

So lets cool the daggers going back and forth and come out with good solid, non biased reviews.

Later,

I can agree with one thing. It isn't worth the $440 I spent (including tax). And I can't get the rebate because I purchased my phone a couple of days before it came out.

If the camera had a better resolution I could justify spending that kind of money but the camera is pretty much useless.

Even though this is the best GSM phone besides the 8390 that I have tried so far, I may be with ferniesp - returning it. I'll wait until the price comes down to re-purchase one.
