noob question about 3g

please excuse the noobish question here but we don't yet have hsdpa in my area yet and i was hoping somebody with experience could answer this question for me (preferably a blackjack user since thats what i have)
with 3g data connection, is it possible to have a voice and data connection simultaneously? (i.e. not get kicked off agile messenger when a call comes in)
