New and Confused, Motorola v170

Hello Everybody,

I am totally new to the idea of flashing/flexing and unlocking cellphones. I currently have a motorola v170 with tracfone service. However, I am switching to a postpaid plan with T-Mobile and getting a motorola v360. BUT, I would like to be able to use my v170 (if something happens to my new v360) as a backup cellphone. But, from what I have read, and after putting a cingular sim card in my tracfone, I realize that I cannot currently do this, I must unlock my v170 first to be able to use it on other networks besides the tracfone network.

So, what I really want to know is... if someone can explain unlocking to me better and the steps involved in unlocking a phone, or possibly point me to a source where I might be able to learn more about it for myself. I am not looking for codes or anything, I just want to understand the process better. Thanks.
