8525 and cingular video

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: fireslayer26

I have an 8525 with the Media Max 200. I can not get cingular video to work. (cingularvideo.cingular.com) When I go to that site, it says I need to download a file, but when I do nothing happens. I stopped by the cingular kiosk in the mall and ofcourse after fidgiting around with my phone for awhile the rep said. "Its because you dont have the right plan... You need the $39.99 PDA plan." Which I know is BS. I've read other peoples post on here saying they have cingular video with the media max bundles. What are the settings to get this working?

Thanks

Posted by: cjmedina

you need realplayer to play the ram file

Posted by: fireslayer26

I have realplayer... but its not the ram file its asking me to download.

I'm trying to do this edit right now....
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...+cingular+video

Posted by: fireslayer26

Ok, I did the registry edit in the above post. I can get onto the cingular video site now, but when I try to view video it says "In order to watch video clips, you must have a data package that includes Cingular Video. The billing systems are unavailable to validate your account at this time. Please try again later. If you would like to validate your account status, or sign up, please call 800-331-0500."

I have also read that others with the 8525 and media net can watch video as long as the media net settings are correct. Can someone walk me through the settings to make sure I have the correct ones?

Thanks.

Posted by: cjmedina

that i cant help you with it. it works fine when i had the tytn and works now with the nokia n73

Posted by: fireslayer26

Can someone with an 8525 and a media net plan that can view cingular video please post your settings for media net, IE, etc.

Thanks

I hope someone knows how to fix this. I haven't tried the RegEdit yet though. When I go to cingularvideo.cingular.com I also get a prompt to download a file. The file name is "CingularVideo." it has a DOT on the end of it with no extension. I'm going to try opening the file in NotePad and see what data's in it. Maybe I can add an extension like .rm to the end of it and play it in Real Player.

Posted by: TriAxis

Well below is the data from the CingularVideo. file. Nothing to interesting except for this link http://i.real.com/assets/msdp/msdp-...nt_HTC-8500.css Which references the HTC-8500, but that link didn't open on its own. I'm going to try the .rm next

I have Media Works Unlimited (grandfathered) and an 8525.

According to Cingular, I'm supposed to be able to get the Cingular Video, but I get the same message as above about them being unable to confirm that my data package is eligible for Cingular Video.

Posted by: zimmer62

I've got the TnTn and I'm getting the message
"In order to watch video clips, you must have a data package that includes Cingular Video. The billing systems are unavailable to validate your account at this time. Please try again later. If you would like to validate your account status, or sign up, please call 800-331-0500."

When I was on the phone with Cingular they said something about it might only with with 3g and that I needed a 3g sim, so I ordered a 3g sim... same problem it didn't fix it, I figured maybe since Lansing MI doesn't have 3g that it also might the problem, well... Today I'm in an area with 3g and it's still the same message.

Grrr..

I can't even get RealPlayer to install. It tells me I need ActiveSync 3.1 or hire. I'm using 4.2

Posted by: strikeIII

in the real player options there should be a connection setting and you need to change it to 802.11B...and i believe you need v1.1 of realplayer for it to work...

Posted by: URPREY

Shogunmark's cab file at xda-developers installs the necessary program and makes the necessary registry changes.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...77&postcount=51

Posted by: trjons

None of those cab files resolve the issue of us getting the message from Cingular that we are not on a data plan eligible for CV.

Unlimited Medianet....hah!

Did you doublecheck your registry setting?

Here was the process I used:

- Install Realplayer and change RealPlayer under Options..Preferences...Network....Type..."select 802.11B"
- Make registry change to (Default) from "HTC-8500/1.2 Mozilla/4.0" to just "Mozilla/4.0" in key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent\
- Connect to Medianet

Also, you can't connect to Cingular Video through isp.cingular

Don't know if that helps or not, but I tried

i believe that unlimited medianet does not support Cingular Video...if you look at cingulars site the MediaMax bundles are the ones that include the Cingular Video...they might have it set up so they see what kind of plan you have on your account and block them accordingly...but maybe the whole isp.cingular thing might be the case...just maybe a thought, i could be wrong...

Posted by: Rock3nrenigade

Change your connection settings, as stated above you cant connect through isp.cingular.

Start>Settings>Connections>Connections.

when i change my registry key to just "Mozilla/4.0" and reset my phone the key changes back. Any ideas??

PS im using PHM to make the changes.

instead of using the stylus to reset the phone...hold down the power button for a couple of seconds and it will ask if you want to power down the phone then hit "yes" and after it shuts off press the power button again...that always works for me...i

Just did the Real Player install via the cab file and registry edit and it works fine now. Before it would try to download some weird file(/MyDocuments?) but now it downloads .ram files. Only annoyance is that RP pops up everytime and saving a file is a little annoying too.

Posted by: mush10

Has anyone had anymore successes with getting this set up and running well? I can't understand why they would not have CV on this phone.

The only problem I can see with the current setup is that PDA plans and some MediaNet plans do not allow access to CV.

The Realplayer install, registry edit, and setting up real player to be on wifi b mode is real easy. It would be nice for Cingular to put out branded software from them but for now it works.

Those having problems with access to the content should verify their Cingular account is setup correct by using the SIM in a CU500 or similar phone to verify the CV works on there Media Plan. This seems to be the biggest hassle which has nothing to do with the 8525.

I do think it is a rip off for the PDA plan to cost an extra $20 and you lose CV and the 200 free txt messages a month compared to the MediaMax 200.

RealPlayer Download with Registry Edit Automatically for you Credit is given to ShoGun at XDA for this I just posted here for anyone having trouble with the registry edit. Copy the file to the device and run from the device to install. Then just change the realplayer to wifi b mode 802.11b. Use MediaNet as your connection settings and point your IE browser to cingularvideo.cingular.com

Posted by: mush10

I'll give a shot tonight. I know I can access CV from my SYNC, so once I do the Edits I'll hopefully have it.

Posted by: mikewchandler

I got it to work finally by putting my sim card in a 3g phone that is provisioned for CV, watched CV and then replaced my sim card back into my treo750 (cing branded). Finally works.

Of course, I have the medianet connection with proxy checked and have installed the .cab from xda made by shogun that includes realplayer and the hack.

Maybe this changes something on Cingular or the SIM...maybe you have the breakthrough for the PDA plan or old medianet plan people.

Posted by: mo-bile

Can anyone please clarify a few things?

1. Can the unlimited PDA plan for $39/month get you Cingular Video with the hacks mentioned above?

2. Can you also access CV when connecting via the built in wifi and the hacks mentioned above?

3. How does the whole process actually work to watch CV on the 8525? You go to the site on the phone and there are categories of videos? You click on a video, it downloads and then plays?

I don't think PDA plan will work but maybe someone here has gotten it to work.

goto cingularvideo.cingular.com...click the video you want...click save w/open after download....it will automatically open realplayer and play.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; WINDOWS NT 5.0; PPC; 240x320))

I now have cingular video working. The fix I found here was to put my sim in a 3G phone that a mediamax plan will work on. For example, my buddies Blackjack. I then watched cingular video on it and then put the sim back in my phone. Cingular video now works in my 8525.

Posted by: mo-bile

thanks wpbear.

fireslayer, I don't know anyone who has a 3G phone. Guess I could always buy and activate a BJ, do the sim card swap you mention, and then return the blackjack for a refund. BTW, what kind of data plan do you have?

i have the work plan (grandfather). you must set media on the fone instead of isp for cingularvideo to work

yes also make sure you have the proxy enabled when your using the mediamax...

Posted by: mo-bile

And there are no hacks to trick it in to working wtih PDA connect plan?

Posted by: Matt_Helm

I had a BJ for two weeks with the Media Max 200 and didn't like the phone. Just picked up the 8525 today and told the guy at the store don't change anything! I'll just set it up myself and call customer service myself. Soooooo I should be able to get CV to work once I install the appropriate crap.

I have an 8525 running the new AT&T ROM. I can get to the Cingular Video page just fine, but like many others I get the "In order to watch video clips, you must have a data package that includes Cingular Video. The billing systems are unavailable to validate your account at this time. Please try again later. If you would like to validate your account status, or sign up, please call 800-331-0500." I have the grandfathered $19.99 Media Works package (1500 txt and unlimited data). Should I be able to access CV? I have had horrible issues in the past dealing with keeping this plan when I've needed to talk to CS, so I don't particularly want to call in. Any insight would be appreciated.

I've got the old grandfathered "Media Works" plan(Unlimited data,1500 sms,200 mms) and CV works just fine on my Blackjack.

Posted by: ahintz

I'll have to see if I can find a BlackJack to test out my SIM in. A least I know the plan should be fine.

Quick question - does anything show up in OLAM to indicate that you have CV enabled?

Thanks!

No nothing is on OLAM to show yes or no. It is something downloaded to the SIM on the first use if CV from a tru CV phone. Most people report using a SYNC or CU500 and watch a CV clip then replace the SIM into the 8525 fixes the issue with Media Net plans. Using a blackjack to try CV is not 100% successfull either. PDA plans are about 50/50 for this trick.

hi guys. this might be a dumb question, but for a new Cingular customer (actually i'm adding a 8525 to my wife's existing family share plan) what is the "best" plan to get? what plan will allow me to get Cingular Video and unlimited data?

it seems like the Smartphone Connect and the PDA Connect are basically the same, except the Smartphone Connect is $20 instead of $45. I bought the phone w/o a plan so I don't need to sign up for anything in particular, I just want the most for my money.

I just did some more research and it looks like maybe MediaMax would be the best bet. What would I NOT get w/ MediaMAx that I would with PDA Connect?

Also, when I call them to add my phone, will I need to lie about which phone I have? On their website it doesn't show the 8525 as a compatable phone with the Media max.

thanks for any advice!!

Posted by: ahintz

Well, I noticed an ad on the Media Net home page for Music Choice Premium videos, and clicked to see what it was. This took me to the Cingular Video pages, and on a lark I went to see if I could see video. Lo and behold, it worked! I haven't done anything on my end, so it looks like Cingular made some change to allow this to happen.

My wife has a sync and my sim allows me to access CV on her phone. When I put my sim back in my 8525, I get the same, "Billing is unable to verify your blood/bone marrow donation to Cingular" message

I got my 8525 this afternoon, brought it home and updated to the AT&T ROM. CV works fine, I'm really surprised after reading all these threads. I'm still on the grandfathered "Media Works" package.

Only problem so far is I can't get MSVC1.5 to work with it..

Posted by: cnynrpr

I have PDA Connect Unlimited and I tried swapping sim cards to another phone. My sim in a Cingular SYNC can access Cingular Video, the sim that was in the SYNC can access CV in my 8525, but my sim in my 8525 still gets the same billing error deal.

I've tried getting a new sim and that didn't work. I haven't tried adding removing data plans or swapping with a Media Net plan then switching back.

Posted by: bkbroil

I did finally get CV to work. I went into the Cingular store and had them put my SIM in BlackJack and goto CingularVideo... Just for my piece of mind, I watched a couple of clips on the BJ and then I put the SIM in my 8525 (made sure that RealPlayer had MediaNet selected) and I not I get CV on my 8525.

Posted by: tribalgifts

1. Download & install RealPlayer Cab.
o you can find details on how to extract the cab file from the realplayer executable here
o once installed, execute RealPlayer program from your 8525 and ensure Options-->Preferences-->Network-->Type=802.118
2. Edit Registry (using Resco Regedit app)
o HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent\
o change from "HTC-8500/1.2 Mozilla/4.0" to just "Mozilla/4.0"
3. Connections
o Connections-->Connections--Advanced-->Select Networks-->Internet Connection=Media Net
4. Website
o Access Cingular video from http://cingularvideo.cingular.com

Posted by: spon23

tribalgifts-

In attempting to Edit my Registry as you described, I don't have "HTC-8500/1.2 Mozilla/4.0" in my User Agent folder. I assume that this would only be there if I installed Mozilla Firefox, correct? Or am I just being stupid? lol.

"HTC-8500/1.2 Mozilla/4.0" should be the default setting defined when you first get your 8525. You should find this in (Default) under the <User Agent> Folder.
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent\(Default)

thanks. i found the correct Reg entry. I didn't look in the (Default). It turns out that mine already had just the Mozilla/4.0 entry. I did everything step by step but wasn't able to watch anything on CV. I'm going to try to SIM card trick as soon as I can. thanks.

Posted by: FirehawkNS

Paying $40 a month for unlimited PDA and not having access to the video site that people payint $20 a month can get is weak. Very very weak on Cingulars part.

Posted by: i880/8525junkie

I'm starting to get worried I won't be able ot use CV once Iget the 8525. and not knowing which plan to go with is a bother!

Posted by: irockash

You get access to it in the new ROM, its available elsewhere, but Cingular will have an official release supposedly sometime soon.

Posted by: i880/8525junkie

The WM6 Rom? or is this some other ROM that XDA makes??

Posted by: Rock3nrenigade

No, the unreleased at&t rom.

Posted by: i880/8525junkie

ooooooooo ok and I'm guessing that will allow 8525 users to use CV.

Posted by: spon23

It's been posted elsewhere, but I wanted to make sure that everyone knows. The 8525 WILL WORK with Cingular Video, however, you must take your SIM, place it into another phone that is meant for CV (such as the LG model) and watch a couple seconds of a CV. After that, it will work on the 8525.

I tried new ROMS, I tried the shotgun, ect but the only thing that worked was putting my SIM in a CV phone. After that I was good to go.

Hope this helps.

Your forgetting to say, it will work, but only with the media max plan, not the PDA plan even if you put it into another phone right?

Posted by: i880/8525junkie

So say I order the 8525 with the media max plan @ the store. Will it work?

Posted by: wpbear

CV is not working with ANY 8525 with ANY plan at this time. Cingular is blocking it saying it is not a 3G phone. If this is a reg entry we can get pst it, but it may not be this simple.

Posted by: irockash

wpbear, have you been lost for the past 4 months? The beginning of this thread gives you everything you need to get it to work. The only reason it wouldn't is the plan. Sure, its not legit (in the sense that the phone isn't "officially" supported")... but it works.

Posted by: i880/8525junkie

I'm still waitin for someone to answer my question...My income tax check didn't come on the 1st as promised by my accountant! :-@ As soon as it arrives, I'll be buying the 8525 so a answer soon would be greatly appreciated

My 8525 is shut out too since at least Friday. I see others have the same problem. It had been working just fine following all the tips and sim swapping.

Most likely they will not let you sign up for a Media Max plan at the store, you will have to get the PDA Unlimited Data plan.

I help put this release of the inital RealPlay and jump start SIM fix out. This is a NEW problem!

So are you saying your 8525 with MediaMax is still streaming CV right now. If so what market are you in and can you post a copy of your registry.

I can CONFIRM that CV works with NetFRONT 3.3 if you change the user agent to LG-CU500, good work jdoshier at XDA.

Now I will look at the registry and see if we can do anything to get PIE to work it. Thanks.

That;s a big low blow if u can't watch CV. I would use it a lot for the sports highlights and some video clips. Thanks for looking out for us wpbear, let us know if u find anything to get it ot work on PIE.

Good info. But does sticking the SIM into a CU400, accessing CV, and putting it back into the 8525 still work?

I also had Cingular Video working prior to last Friday. I didnt have to install Netfront, the following solution worked for me using PIEPlus:

It still sux, but it's working again.

Anyone else get this to work with PIE. Mine did not work with PIE.

@brettatk: To confirm your setup. You are using the MediaNet in connections. You only changed the one string in the reg (HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent) nothing else and it just worked.

Yes, I am using MediaNet with the proxy for my connection. That is the only thing I changed. I tested it before I changed the value and I got the message saying Cingular Video can only be used with a 3G phone. As soon as I changed the registry value and rebooted the phone Cingular Video worked just as it use to.

Ok, I will have to try PIEPlus now cause I could not get it to work with NetFront, but then I wasn't sure if I changed the settings the right way.

Did you make any changes in the Option Plus area in PIEPlus to the User agent area, or did you use the standard PIE setting?
I have PIE PLUS and it is not working. I installed PIEPlus registered version, made the one reg edit, and I get the same error.

Under PiePlus..tools..Options Plus...User Agent...

I tried PIE...didint work.

I tried custom with these settings:
Default: LG-CU500
Compatible: compatible
Version: MSIE 4.01
Platform: Windows CE
Post Platform: PPC; 240x320

Still didn't work. I was successful with NetFront but that browser sucks.

Posted by: weezie

FYI, PIEPlus did not work either.

For those of you who have it working, did you do the upgrade to AKU 3.3? Are you using shogun's cab file?

Before I upgraded to AKU 3.3 I did have shoguns cab installed but I can't remember if I had jumpstarted my sim before or after the upgrade. I just know it was working with the Realplayer from AKU 3.3 and now it's not. So far I have tried Netfront, PIEPlus, and the reg hack. So next up is shogun's cab again.

Also, I am still running WM5. Just trying to troubleshoot why these fixes work for some and not for others.

I've never been able to get Cing Video to work even with all the tweaks I've seen on this board with registry settings...Real Player installed and tweaked, etc.....but I recently did a hard reset and once again tried to get CV but no luck...same message about contacting Cingular...BUT I've tried the above registry tweak and once again gave it a try on my 8525 and it has actually worked for the first time since I've owned the device. Content is pretty limited and I hate that it won't fill the device screen on 'full screen' settings, but at least it finally works for me.

Once your SIM is jump started once you are good. I am on WM6 and Netfront was the only one that worked, no regedit needed just use the User Agent settings. I really wish we could get it with PIE alone.

So you are on which ROM? And you only did the one reg key change? And which Realplayer?

Posted by: weezie

@wpbear

What version of Realplayer do you have and did it come with WM6? Does it have the wifi choice in settings?

I just tried Netfront again and did not do the reg hack, and made a custom LG-CU500 for User Agent field, but still no go.

WM6 does not come with it, I used the same Realplayer available here and on XDA. It is all the same RealPlayer, expcept the one in Cingular AKU 3.3 is different, but I do not know anyone with that as a separate CAB, only builtin to the ROM. It does have Wifi, and it says version 2.0.0.28. I know the realplayer is fine though since Netfront plays it. Looks like my new backup browser will be Netfrnt instead of Opera. it doesnt make sense that useing netfront UA settings in the the PIEPlus program which has the same functionallity and it doens work in PIE plus. It is also strange that 2 posters have it working on plain old PIE with one reg edit, this is VERY strange.

I think those users have not done the upgrades and for some reason that might make a difference this time.

Thanks on the info on RP. I have been trying to determine the differences in them before I install over the one in AKU 3.3 I do not want to reflash if I needed to get that RP back, it was just too nerve wracking for me Oh wait, I guess alls I would have to do is a hard reset....

Posted by: brettatk

I have not upgraded my ROM since I got the phone(ROM 1.34.502.1). That could be the factor in why some of you cannot get it to work.

I only changed the one registry setting and my settings are as followed:

Realplayer is version 2.0.0.28 for Pocket PC.

PIEPlus is set to the following:

PIE (default)
Mozilla/4.0
MSIE 4.01
Windows CE
PPC; 240X320

Posted by: weezie

I installed the shogun cab, did the reg hack and Netfront now does work, but it's wonky. You have to download the clip then open RP, and then open the clip, is it the same for you wpbear?

@brettatk:

Thanks for that info. I guess it will be easier for those that did not do the upgrade. I don't think you even need PIEPlus for it to work either.

Yes you can get the Realplayer to play after download I found out if you go to options and the plugins area you need to associated RAM files with realplayer, then it works a little smoother.

Got it. Working. Thank you.

Still hoping it can eventually work with PIE, but it's better than nothing for now.

Posted by: guapinoy

god knows it's been too long since i've seen some Aqua Teen on cingular video

Posted by: wpbear

I have been readng about User Agents for about 2 hours now....I have to say there is NO reason why I can not get PIE or even easier PIEPLUS to work for CV. So i guess I will live with Netfront for my backup browser instead of opera. I looked up the BJ UA since HOFO as many BJ users that confirm it is still working too. So after trying LG-CU500 and BJ strings and nothing I need a break....

I actually like 2 parts about NetFront. I can use regular My ISP and configure the proxy only through NetFront and also once setup for RAM files it is faster to start the playing. But since NetFront will not automatically accept server certificates I can not use it as my primary browser since I HATE approving every server access for my work network.

I'm on the original Cingular rom (dated 9/21/06) with shoguns tweaked rom file installed and the above registry change...and I've got it working with pie

Well it sounds like a ROM difference then. I wonder if the newer WM5 ROM would work the same as yours. It might be that WM6 gives another clue to the server that it is not a LG-CU500 or a BJ since this is a true PPC not a phone or smartphone. WM6 may have additional identifiers other than the old UA. Net Front get by it so I am living with it for know since I have other projects to work on (XDA Live v 2 is OUT)

Posted by: weezie

I'm still on WM5 but with the AKU 3.3 update and that neat little reg hack alone does not work. So I agree, somewhere along the line it's the ROM identifier.

Yes and I think the NetFront thing works only because it is very obscure in the Pocket browser apps. I havent tried Opera but that may even work if you can change the UA since Opera, while more well known than NetFront, Cingular usually isnt that bright to think forward enough to all possibilties. Blocking a PIE signature was probably an easy fix on thier side, but add another 2 or 3 software in the mix and they will probably come unglued from not knowing where to start.

I used the BlackJack's User Agent and I now have access to Cingular Video again. I'm using a Troe 750 but I think this will work for all WM5 devices. Since BJ is a supported CV device, I guess that's why it works.
See my post here:

Bummer, didn't work for me

What error message do you see? Do you see the "Only supported 3G devices" message or something else?

Netfront 3.3 is what you need. but it is not freeware. There may be a trial out there to test it out.

I totally agree. I dont think I've watched a single thing on it since I got it working. I guess it's just about being able to stick it to the man!!

Has anyone had any luck gettng CV to work with the old "blue" ATT Wireless SIM. I have the unlimited PDA Plan.

Posted by: lewi1032

I have installed the shogun cab and i still cant get the cv to work, but I did use my buddies sim card and it works! I did take my card and put it in a blackjack and lg and access cv, put it back in my card and NOTHING! go figure, just figured I would shed some more light on this subject. Guess i will try netfront and see what happens.

unless there is something new he is full of it....also if that is GREAT detail the sales guy went into then again he is full of it! Sounds like another used car sales guy working in the wireless biz.

Posted by: RF9

I think if you put a SIM in to a NORMAL phone (eg: LGCU400,500) that support cingular video (not a Blackjack) then it will 'turn on' cingular video for your account. I used to get the message then one day I put my SIM in to a different phone, it worked, and has always worked since so long as I have an IE "user agent" of the blackjack on WM5.
Not totally sure, though.

Posted by: i880/8525junkie

o well, all I can do is try and put it in a razr maxx and hope for the best.

Did not work for me. I have 8525 w/ MM200 w/ 2.06 rom.

Posted by: i880/8525junkie

I have the Pda MAXX plan and I believe it's not fair that I would have to choose between unlimited txts and Cv!

Posted by: claus2488

i have the slingbox on the 8525 and it is great ,,,,and works where ever there is wireless internet ... it uses my home dvd and tv ...no fees

wally

Posted by: i880/8525junkie

jus stopped by cor store and they would't let me put my sim card in the V3XX and see if it would work. I think I have bad luck with cingular reps and I've only been with the company for 9 days

Just returned from Europe and all of a sudden, CV is working. I have the updated ROM on an 8525. Have made no reg edits and have no explanation why Video is now available.

Cingular probably realized that CV is not that good and nobody was utilizing it...so they made it available just to get people to use it....

I would love to get a hold of that RealPlayer that was in the 2.06 Cingular update that allows CV to play in full screen landscape.

Posted by: prubin

I have CV in full screen landscape - picture not great, but it does work. Just don't know why it is now working and did not work prior to 8525 being in Europe.

Posted by: mexican-bum

To get CV to work if you get message "you need to subscribe to a plan the has cingular video" or something like that on 8525 when you know you already have media max 200 just delete and re add the feature online and it will fix it. Its just not provisioned correctly, but this will fix it.

Posted by: i880/8525junkie

jus download the 8525 software upgrade from HTC and you will have Cingular Video...
